In terms of letdown, I'm going to go with Silent Hill 2. Everyone I knew kept telling me it was awesomely creepy and really intense, but I played through and never got more than mildly interested. Of course, this may just mean I have retarded friends.

Anyways, what's yours?

Overhyped? Damn, that's a tough one...just kidding.
Halo 2. What the hell was up with that game? Yeah the graphics are great for the Xbox, yeah it's got great gameplay and replay value, but the storyline of the game seems like it was an accident.

Oh, and SH2 was pretty lame. Everything was telegraphed, so you could expect a scare if you already understood the genre.

I thought it was bad even when it came out. When I played it on the PS2 almost six years ago, I could say then that I was unimpressed. I'm not talking about how it looked, because I always look at gameplay first. Its gameplay was dependant on scares. It had none, for me, so I thought it was bad.

But, yeah, WoW is definitely overrated in some aspects. It can't be too horrible if 8 million people still pay to play it, though...

Halo 2 and Final Fantasy 7 are total givens.

The closest I can think of besides those is maybe Suikoden, Chrono Cross, and Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Lots of characters + RPGS are hard to make work.

By the way, that top 20 list has some interesting inductions, but is kinda shite IMO.

I do completely, without a doubt agree with you on the WoW thing, but I would like to say that the graphics were not what made me annoyed with silent hill 2. It just seemed boring to me. The enemies weren't scary. End of story. Maybe they made some people crap their pants, but for me, no dice. Especially the zombie things at the beginning. When they started slithering around on the ground, I actually died once because of how rediculously funny the whole concept/animation was. It literally made me laugh so hard I dropped my controller. To conclude, I'd really like to say that I didn't hate the game. Really. I just thought it was overhyped.

Oh yeah, final thought: I know the whole "no health bar on screen so you have to feel for the vibration of your heatbeat" thing was kinda cool; actually, it was pretty damn cool, but when I really needed to know my health, I absolutely loathed pausing the game every 30 seconds.

36 million people in the US live below the poverty line, so it can't be that bad.

Mafia: Everyone kept telling me how great the story is bla bla bla. But here's the thing: Without good gameplay, the story is nothing, and Mafia plays like a poor mans GTA. I wouldn't call it bad, but the story, which hasn't overwhelmed me yet either, can't do everything, and I found many missions to be a pain in the ass. I'm probably still gonna finish the game, since I've only got 2 missions left, but I doubt very much I'm ever playing it again.

Oh boy, have i got a few:

- Devil May Cry series. Stupid and corny stories, equally stupid and corny characters. Not even so stupid and corny it's funny, but just stupid and corny.
- Metal Gear Solid series. Same as above, plus crappy gameplay.
- Every JRPG ever made. Same as above.
- Guitar Hero series. Yeah, it's pretty fun with your friends after a couple of beers, but not that fun.
- Every goddamn RTS ever, especially Starcraft. One sentence sums the whole genre up perfectly: "ZERG RUSH KEKEKE ^______^"
- Diablo. Boring hack'n'slash with insanely repetitious gameplay.
- Killer 7. It just sucks.

Feel free to internet kick my internet ass.

Doom 3

I thought it was a decent game, but people were talking like it was one of the greatest, and reviewers were giving it ratings in the 90s. The game wasn't that scary, people. There were some good audio logs, but how many times can you have an imp jump at you through the door you just opened before it stops being scary? At one point, I just firing my shotgun as soon as the doors opened, and most of the time, I actually would hit and kill one of them.

The graphics were good, but there's more to a good game than just graphics.

I remember PC Gamer but a short article about it in their editorials because they kept getting flak for giving the game a 90-something rating. They said there were two camps on the issue: those who liked the game, and those who didn't "get it". I "got" that they had some big ads in your magazine, PC Gamer, but I still didn't like the game that much.

Chojin
Feb 12th, 2008, 12:28 PM
Doom 3 I thought was really scary, but it wasn't a great game. And I actually got in the practice of turning around to shoot behind me every time I opened a door, and would usually hit something.

Probably the hardest sell that id faced with doom3 was to the die hard doom fans of the originals. sure the game faced competition but it wasnt like carmack could turn the clock back to '93 and re-create the explosion. 3d graphics and fps style game play had allready been brought to the table long ago, and though the originals were nothing more than fuzzy pixels there wasnt any place left they could have gone with it.

Hey, what do you have against Jim Morrison? Sure, he was a freak, but his singing kicked ass. Maybe you just don't like The Doors, but even my great-grandmother, who hated rock music, thought Jim Morrison could sing well.

And I agree with you about doom 3. The fights really were boring and it wasn't scary. The only thing I liked was the ridiculously overdone violence, which I thought was just plain funny.

But what I really hated in Doom 3 was what they did to the shotgun: Once the standard bread-and-butter gun of doom, it wasn't turned into a piece of crap. The game plays several decades (or even further:confused:) in the future and people haven't designed a better shotgun than that? We have better shotguns NOW for fuck's sake! Once a weapon of pride and dignity, it was degraded into a suckfest! It makes me sick!:x And the sound of it got on my nerves after a while too.

I'm sure that I'm in the minority here, but I just don't find Super Mario Galaxy all too interesting, and certainly not deserving of the "#1 Game Of All Time" position that it quickly jumped to on many gaming site/publication lists. Hell, I've found Super Paper Mario to be far more interesting and creative of a game, and that's even after sitting through the absurdly long intro story text that you just...can't...skip.

Final Fantasy VIII - Because the Main character was boring and shitty (Siefer should have been the main character btw, would have made the game intresting and not as stupid)

Killzone Liberation-If fucking sucks

Bionic Commando-Worse than Killzone

Eternal Champions (not the Sega CD one, the genesis one)-Slow sloppy controls and cheap enemies who can spam specials even when their metre is gone.

Halo 2+3-the only people i know who play this game are idiotic 14-17 year olds who watch inuyasha and naruto.

Dragonball Z budokai-Oh joy, just 1478 more hours of play and then i can unlock super saiyan 3 for Goku. Then the game will get fun. Wheres my Great Saiyaman Superhero beat em up damnit.

Mortal Kombat 3/Ultimate/Trilogy- PURE SHIT.

Final Fantasy X,X-2,XI,XII and likely XIII-Just stop making them already. You reached your peak with VI, so just stop.

Any Godzilla game - JUST LET ME SMASH SHIT. Or give it Controls like a mix of Firepro and Streetfighter. And where the fuck is Gamera, the giant, flying, fire-breathing sea turtle powered by the happyness of japanese children.

Counterstrike - Counterstrike is a unforgivable piece of shit, a decrepid stain on the internet. The game is the biggest piece of shit i have ever had the displeasure of playing. Is it even safe to call it a game when all the game is just one big chatroom full of campers, assholes and elitest fuckwads. Sure, CS may have been fun if you have been playing it since 1999, but its 2007, there are better games, and there were better games before CS (Unreal Tournament). Counterstrike is fucking retarded.

I think ALL Halo games are overrated. The only reason it's so famous is because it's the best shooter on the Xbox, which really doesn't mean much. There are dozens of better shooters for the PC, but since it's worshipped by all Xbox gamers, that doesn't really matter.

There are servers like 4chan where people are complete assholes and spam everything but there are plenty of servers where you can have a good time.

Oh and for most overrated, Bioshock for sure, i am so pissed off when another fucking publication gives it game of the year or some retard award.

I don't think that makes me any less of a football fan. I just hate that overall the game has changed little in 10 years.

Sega sports proved they could do the same thing as Madden did better and cheaper when they released their 2K game on the PS2 for a mere 20 bucks on day of release, and EA, knowing their secret was exposed did the only thing they could do about it. They bought out the NFL license so they wouldn't have to compete. Now their product is weaker because they don't have to be better than anyone else because they are the only game in town with the NFL license.

But as long as people keep throwing money at their brand this cycle will continue unfortunately. :\

You have to admit, voice inflection, which is impossible to convey in the written word form, is a big part of sarcasm. Without it, it is hard to tell sarcasm and a simple rebuttal apart (In either case I would likely have answered the same way though because it was a valid observation that hardcore football fans are usually unquestionably loyal to the Madden franchise, while I am not.)

I happen to like the 2K franchise though. I preferred it from it's inception since I played it on the Dreamcast. That is a matter of personal taste though I suppose. 2K5 had all the things I required out of a good football game. Franchise mode, player stats, solid gameplay. Madden may have looked a bit more polished in the graphics department, but I preferred the more colorful bright look to the ralistic look of Madden, it is a video game after all, so show me something shiney and pretty :lol

Too bad the 2K series never went the extra mile by changing the graphics to more of an anime-styled look. Why settle for boring "realistic" graphics when you can have a kaleidescope of colors and animations blasting your peepers?

That much I can attest to, at least with the other two games. Of course, when you're a casual player and your friends are super hardcore dedicated players... not so much.
Then it will probably live up to the hype for a casual player, but not for a hardcore one.

One thing that's really been pissing me off about Brawl is how many times it gets set back. I pre-ordered it back when the release date was in November. Then it got kicked to December 3rd.
"Yeah, I can wait another month for it."
January 3rd.
"C'mon, Nintendo..."
February 3rd.
"What the hell, man?!"

Yeah, Nintendo (or any company that delays a title) should go fuck themselves for trying to make a polished product that they feel is up their own standards. I love how nerds rage out against companies for delays as if they'd rather play an unfinished or inferior product that is released "on time".

Sometimes it's the other way around though. Lots of people were nearly ready to crucify Jowood for forcing Piranha Bytes to bring Gothic 3 out early, meaning that it was filled with bugs and had way higher hardware requirements than it shoudld have. And Jowood did just 'cause they were nearly bankrupt, but who gives a shit about that? Yep, lots of german gamers will never forgive Jowood for that.

I realize it's not a straight FPS, but a RPG/FPS hybrid, but that doesn't mean they have to make the shooting system in the game suck so hard it actually ruined the game for me! Just the fact that the made a movie and a couple spin-off games (not to mention the other merchandising) off of FF7 is evidence enough that it's highly overrated.

Zomboid
Mar 5th, 2008, 05:23 PM
Yeah, it's incredibly overrated, but it was a really fun game. What bugs me about that is that it was a game that I really enjoyed on my first playthrough, and now it's hard to get into it again because so many people are obsessed with it. It's not just a little overrated either, because so many people hail it as the greatest game of all time and nothing will ever top it.

Codiekitty
Mar 5th, 2008, 06:33 PM
Um, they made spin-offs and a movie about Mario and Street Fighter 2 (I'm not aware of FF7 having a Where's Waldo-type book, although feel free to enlighten me if I'm wrong). Are they considered highly overrated?

As far as FF7 being overrated, I'm a bit torn. I thought it was okay. My beef with it was it was riddled with the stupidest minigames I've ever plodded through, like the snowboarding with the dumbass controls, and performing CPR on the girl, and the Rufus Shinra welcoming display. But when it knocked off that minigame crap and delivered solid RPG gameplay, it was fairly decent. I was also impressed with the graphics (I played through it last summer, for what it's worth)... well, mostly. I mean, Rufus looked like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man.

Now, on one hand, there's the "BEST GAME EVER" folks. But I've actually heard more people call it garbage than I have heard it called "Best Game Ever", and most people, even most of the people who call it "Most Overrated Game Ever" seem to only call it "average".

I definitely lean to it being overrated, given all the cosplayers and copycats (like that Zap! webcomic) and how the GameFAQs Character Battles always come down to Cloud vs. Link or Sephiroth vs. Mario, but I think the title of "Most Overrated Game Ever" should go to a game that's actually bad.

At least you can look at the game itself and find inspired monster designs, color, and intriguing scenery, as opposed to Shadow of the Colossus teaching people that brown and gray and a sun that's timefrozen midway through a supernova are preferrable to all of that.

Dr. Boogie
Mar 5th, 2008, 08:11 PM
Um, they made spin-offs and a movie about Mario and Street Fighter 2 (I'm not aware of FF7 having a Where's Waldo-type book, although feel free to enlighten me if I'm wrong). Are they considered highly overrated?

1. "Mario" is a franchise, not a single game. If they started making spin-offs and movies about Super Mario Bros. 2, then yes, that would likely be an overrated game.

2. SF2 saw all sorts of corny merchandise tie-ins, including GI Joe-style action figures with vehicles for some reason. In that respect, yes, it was completely overblown just like Mortal Kombat would be overblown a few years later. However, the game also did a lot for the SF2 series in terms of game mechanics, including the introduction of the "combo" attack, whereas a game like FF7 had only minor additions to the basic gameplay.

Finally, you're wrong in saying that a game should have to be bad to be overrated. It just has to be not as good as people claim that it is, such as when people talk about FF7 like it was the pinacle of RPGs. That sets the bar way too high for such an "average" game.

As for your comment on how SotC looked, I could care less how a game looks as long as it's entertaining. And I enjoyed Shadow of the Colossus.

Yeah, "tend to". But there are some genuinely bad games with rabid fanbases. Final Fight comes to mind. I've only played an hour of it, but I have it on good authority Lunar is horrible.

In any case, I could make a case for Halo being more overrated than FF7. I could probably make a stronger one had I actually played Halo, which I would gladly do if I actually owned an Xbox.

One of FF7's claims to fame is its special effects, like the Star Wars of video games. Most of the summons are flashy, like Bahamut Zero and Knights of the Round, and Sephiroth's Supernova attack. Admittedly they're kind of long, but they're interesting to watch once.

Halo's claim to fame is that you can see all the individual blades of grass and leaves on the trees.

FF7 has all kinds of weird enemies, and you get a nice variety at the beginning of the game, like those wolves with their tails growing out the back of their head, the house that turns into a WMD, and the first boss is some kind of robotic scorpion.

Supposedly, you're fighting the same two or three enemies for the first half of Halo.

FF7 has all kinds of scenery, like Midgar itself, the rubble you climb on the way to Shinra HQ, Cosmo Canyon, or that town that looked like it got nuked and the survivors rebuilt what they could with rubble.

Halo is supposed to take place mostly in boring mechanical bases that all look the same.

The characters in FF7 may not be great, Cloud is emo and Sephiroth is Kefka lite. But Cid is awesome (I once called him a little kid in a compulsive swearing old man's body), and at least they all had faces, names, and some kind of personalities.

Master Chief has none of those features, and as a friend of mine said, might as well be called "Captain Gunshoot Man"

Chojin
Mar 6th, 2008, 11:21 AM
Depends on what you mean by overrated. By real gamers, FF7 is by FAR the more overrated of the two. Between frat boys and review rags, Halo 3 probably outscored FF7.

One of FF7's claims to fame is its special effects, like the Star Wars of video games.

That's not why it's over-rated today. Most people complain about the long summons.

Halo's claim to fame is that you can see all the individual blades of grass and leaves on the trees.

No it wasn't. It was the AI and the multiplayer.

FF7 has wacky rpg bosses, Halo has two or three enemies

Well, uh, what are you arguing here? Asian RPGs have crazy enemies, therefore they're awesome? Dude, they're ASIAN. That's all they do over there.

And in Halo, you're fighting an army of aliens who come from two or three distinct nationalities. Would you play Call of Duty and complain that all of your enemies are human?

FF7 has scenery / Halo takes place in boring mechanical bases

Both games spend the majority of their time outdoors.

FF7 characters have FACES! Master Chief wears a helmet!

You are aware that master chief isn't the only character in Halo, right? You can dismiss two of the idiotic archetypes in FF7 (both of whom are the main characters), but you can't dismiss the guy that you rarely even see in Halo?

Neither are the best game ever, but FF7 certainly brought less to the table in terms of unique gameplay than the first Halo did. The "7" here is the clue.

Speaking of clues, seek one out.

1. "Mario" is a franchise, not a single game.

FFVII has (for better or worse [probably worse]) become a franchise as well, though. Hence games like Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus.

Personally, as far as FFVII goes, I'm in the "Best Game Ever" camp. I actually think it's underrated in many ways.

Most overrated game ever, off the top of my head, would have to be Rainbow 6 Vegas. I played that for 20 minutes and was bored out of my mind the whole time.

Deus Ex is great because of all the ways you can go about doing things. I do agree that the gunplay combat is annoying. It's that way because it isn't a traditional FPS where you are supposed to go balls out and kill everything so it's toned down a lot and pretty much just a real time rpg combat system. After upgrading your gun abilities and weapons, it does get better.

I'd like to point out something about FFVII that I've noticed over the years.

As I've discussed video games with my friends, and FFVII has come up, I have always noticed one consistant thing. Every single guy with the exeption of one I have ever asked for their opinion on FFVII has called it either mediocre or crappy, or maybe average. On the extreme other hand, all five or six of the girl gamers I know start foaming at the mouth, creaming their pants, and rolling on the floor screaming "CLOUD!!! MMMMM!!!! CLOUDY-CLOUD-CLOUD!!! TAKE ME NOW!!!" or something to that effect.

What is it with girls and FFVII? I'm not trying to be an asshole, and I'm sure there are some girls out there who hate the game, and just as many guys who adore it, but seriously, they must live in a dimension parallel to mine, or something.

However, as I pointed out at the beginning of the thread, I may just have especially crazy friends.

I've read the board, followed the topic, and didn't plan to post. The obvious choices are now out of the way.

Final Fantasy VII is a cinch, and for a while, this might as well had become a FF message board; it says it right on the back of the box: "Quite possibly the greatest game ever made." How could it not be overrated?

Halo 2 & 3 are locks too... Shooters have evolved less than JRPG's in my opinion, and most of the one's that are highly regarded since Doom got high marks on their graphics, story, or multiplayer.

WoW is a take-it-or-leave-it proposal; MMO's generally are, and just because this one got recognized by South Park doesn't make it special or great, just popular. I've played it and others. It doesn't do anything special. It just does what it does better than the rest.

Metal Gear Solid 2 was overrated by the gaming press, and I think even those who exalted it when it came out would deride it now.

Only one person mentioned Fable, and I agree. However, it was more a victim of hype than most of the others. Molyneux promised more than he could deliver, and more than any forseeable generation of consoles can deliver. It's rating's as I remember weren't great, but they were generous.

No one has mentioned The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. So I'm going to put it out there. It's the Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull of that series to this point. And I liked the graphics and stylistic direction of the game. The storybook/waterpaint motif worked. I don't think that it was a victim of hype, because once the screenshots were released, everyone ignored every aspect of the game to bitch about the new look. Don't get me wrong, Wind Waker is way better than a slew of games out there. The mechanics put in place by Ocarina of Time set the series up for success in the third dimension. But the pacing, the plot, the bosses, the adventure, and so on and so forth were just "meh" compared to what Nintendo Power, IGN, GamePro, EGM, and most other reviews I read made it out to be.

Fat_Hippo
Jun 3rd, 2008, 09:11 AM
Okay, this one's a bit too obvious, but one game hasn't been mentioned yet (as far as I've seen) that deserves it's place in this thread: Crysis. Why the fuck is this game getting scores in the 90's on so many major gaming sites?
Okay, the graphics are good. Got that. But it's also the most hardware hungry programm ever to be seen on PC, so I would actually count that AGAINST the games score, since even on my PC, which is pretty damn good actually, I couldn't run it on medium quality without the frame rate frequently slowing down. Blech.
And the game itself is only mediocre. Fighting against the Koreans using your abilities is pretty fun, sure, but as soon as you see have to fight the aliens the game turns into a boring piece of shit, meaning the last 3 hours or so just plain suck. Anything higher than a rating in the 70's is too high, and even that's generous.

Are you fucking kidding me? How the hell could you not liked CoD 4? Sure, it was all scripted, but that didn't stop the fights from being nothing short of amazing. And it looks nice too!

I have never had fun playing a match in COD4. The only redeeming feature is the story.

There are a lot better shooters for the 360. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Halo 3 are examples.

so you just are going on magazine reviews, then

Yeah; when TWW came out I was stoked, and I checked the reviews and they were stellar. Then I played it and felt kinda "Meh." Plus like I said, all the obviously overrated games have been mentioned. Wind Waker comes far down my list of overrated games, but it's on there nonetheless.

I've always liked Metroid. It has an awesome atmosphere and story. The gameplay is pretty great too.

Street Fighter is terrible. I don't get why it was so fun on arcades 9fun enough to start "the Age of 2-D Fighters" or whatever.

Halo games. I really dislike them. They're pretentious. They take themselves waaay too seriously. There's a God forsaken auto aim you CAN'T turn off. I hate that damn auto/sticky aim. Now all the friggin FPS games have it. Why must games be dumbed down?

Timesplitters series is so much better than Halo series.

Hopefully Timesplitters 4 on The Wii and The Conduit will be fun, cuz I can't stand these recent FPS games. They're so boring. I couldn't care less about their "mad grafix" either.

I was so sad at the Haze reviews. I thought Free Radical could do no wrong.

FFT is the only FF game I've ever, ever liked and I can attest to the greatness. FFT:A was pretty good too, I don't remember it breaking the fourth wall but I remember the judge system completely fucking me over a few times, like telling me never to attack.

I'm playing through Silent Hill 2 again and I realized that if you don't play it in the right environment, the game can be absolutely horrible. It's probably why so many people hate it.

Well, after playing the first one I can see why everyone saw it as so much of an improvement.

Because it was.

The hospital in SH1 is really, really creepy, I've got to admit, but like SH2 there haven't really been any outright pants shitting moments. The first time I encountered a Dark Nurse was sort of unsettling, but when I got the hammer/pickaxe thing and started bashing the heads of the hospital staff in with nary a second thought it all became shits and giggles.

This sort of reminds me of how Resident Evil 4 stopped being scary after I got the shotgun and realized that I was DEATH INCARNATE.

Halo, it was boring and repeative. I'm quite sure the sequels aren't any better, after all 99% of Halo's fanbase consists of sweaty 13-year-old boys who play though and swear during the game while their parents aren't around

Did Spore make the list yet

Spore really doesn't belong there. It's more of a potentially awesome game that was totally fucked up in a way that enraged its original supporters, than it is one that got unwarranted positive press once it was released.

A big pick of mine has to be Duck Hunt. It's hailed as being such a retro gem just because the dog was amusing, but the gameplay really isn't that good, and in fact, the gun worked only half the time, as I remember.

Also, Viewtiful Joe. It never ceases to enrage me that the media glorified the game for how difficult it was. It's one thing for a game like Megaman to be difficult, because running and gunning is generic, and so at least one game is entitled to be harder than the pack. However, VJ was an innovative idea with broad appeal to begin with, so making it difficult only ruined it for many people. It's even worse when the game had multiple difficulty levels. They could have just made the lowest level really easy, and kept the highest level the same, working perfectly to please everyone, but instead they just settled on hard, harder, hardest. That's a bad idea.

Guitar Woman

see, the thing is that if i play a NES game, i would much rather play Ninja Gaiden, or Super Mario Bros, or power blade or Double Dragon.

A couple of months ago, i bought Rearmed and after a few hours of playing it, i pretty much like "Holy shit, this game is fucking awesome. Maybe i was wrong about the NES version this whole time." So i fire it up on my PC, and it was just as bad as i remember it being. Its not like Bionic Commando was completely revolting, but it felt so mediocre that i can not possibly fathom how that game has so much popularity.

As I said on the DKU, in terms of a whole series taken together, the award for Most Overrated probably has to go to Mario Kart. Simply put, it has very little actual gameplay; only luck, and punishing good players and rewarding bad ones, which MK does with reckless abandon by giving great items to the guys in last place, and having the best items harass the leader, is a stupid, unfair, and enraging design choice.
