View Full Version : SURVEY: I-Mockery User Blogs?

Mockery
Apr 10th, 2008, 10:34 PM
We're considering adding a new feature to I-Mockery where our own users would have blogs of their own. Basically, anybody could go to your profile and see your latest posts and we'd also have links to a main blog page that would show all the latest posts by all I-Mockery users.

So is this something that would be of interest to you guys? Lemme know! :picklehat

How would this be different to the 'Find All Posts By...' that is on drop down if you click a user's name?

Or the 'New Posts' (http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/search.php?do=getnew) function?

Because it's called a blog, sheesh Pub.

Actually I hate to admit that this sounds kind of cool to me, at least in theory.

I'm with Pub in that I really don't see how it's any different than what we have now.

Oh Lordy. Then people will see portions of their own drunken and/or drug induced rants in other people's siggies!

I say "yea."

Maybe back when there were more than a handful of decent posters here. Now I think you'd just be showing how much these forums suck.

Alright, I'll admit that this could be a very good idea or a pretty mediocre one. Thus, the idea passes to stage two where I ask:

1. More specifics: how would the blog feature be different from regular posting?
2. By "anyone", referencing who could do it, is this secret code for "people judged to be worth it"? You didn't say anything to imply it, but I'll pretend you did.

Also, something I was thinking about suggesting that seems relevant is this: make a thread, or a site feature similar to a thread, where people make observations or jokes or ideas based on a certain determined theme. If people want to discuss contributions, whether it be with an emoticon of someone saying "that's not funny!" to someone else or with an emoticon of a turquoise laughing face, they could do so elsewhere.

I wouldn't use it if it was introduced. I agree that it feels unnecessary.

I'd think that anything worth putting in a message board blog is something that we'd rather have posted on the board at large to drive content.

I don't understand who would use it or what these blog posts would contain.

Yeah, it's a great idea if you want to further the degradation of the forums :rolleyes :rolleyes

Well, thank you kindly. I do have a blog. All should visit it.

Like others have pointed out...I'm not really sure how this is really a blog and not just a fancier 'all posts by' feature. Like Seth, I think more detail or an example is needed.

If it's just a fancy version of the 'all posts by' feature, why bother?

is there another msg board we can look at for an example where this blog thing is set up

Esuohlim

I think part of the confusion here is the use of the word "posts".

Mockery
Apr 12th, 2008, 03:22 PM
Ok, since there's obviously some confusion, lemme show you guys how they work. vBulletin now has a blog plug-in available and I thought some of you might be interested in it. Please check out all of the following links to help get a better understanding of how it would work (obviously, it would look like I-Mockery and wouldn't be the bright white design that they have):

Info about the features of vBulletin blog:
http://www.vbulletin.com/features_blog.php

Here's the blog homepage on a forum:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/blog.php

Here's a test user trying it out:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/blog.php?u=19405

Here's that same user with a bunch of comments in one of his blogs:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/blog.php?b=2

Hope this clears up some of the questions you guys have about it. And yes, there are some other sites out there that have implemented both forums and user blogs such as Newgrounds and Destructoid.

Fathom Zero

I like how Destructoid promotes super fly stories to tthe main page. Could ya incorporate something similar here? That'd be freakin' tight.

GADZOOKS
Apr 12th, 2008, 08:41 PM
The example content wise makes me feel like it's an even worse idea than before. :(

I've seen those Destructoid blogs when I use to read the site for videogame news and those are nothing but flame baiting and "I bought something today" posts. It was just an uneeded extension to their already abysmal comment section. I think the only reason why anyone would read someone's blog is to find information to make fun of them. Most people here who are interesting enough already have their own blogs somewhere else. I don't see myself reading anyone's blog or making them. The message boards eat up enough of my time.

Added: Also, I don't want people spamming their new blog entries around the forums especially in the chat thread. It's bad enough hearing people complain about boring shit there and I don't need links to longer versions of that boring shit. BUT THAT'S JUST ME, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Chojin
Apr 12th, 2008, 10:29 PM
Those examples are pretty much exactly what I thought they'd be. I still don't understand why entries like that couldn't be posts in chat or their own threads.

Apr 13th, 2008, 03:45 AM
yeah, shit sucks. chat threads are where it's at
