Finally some Hockey to watch.
I was watching a top 10 plays of the week last night and the number one pot was this player getting his jersey ripped off and donkey konging the other guy. His name might have been Seline but I can't find a video of it. Was glorious.

I wonder if the Flyers will make another big run at the cup?
I wonder if the Blue Jackets have a chance?
I wonder if I will be as excited about the postseason as the Flyers and their spunkiness made me last season?

Mar 7th, 2011, 08:16 PM
If the bonds don't sell then it will be the Coyotes and they'll have to announce it within a couple of weeks because they make the schedules for arenas like a year in advance. Having the Coyotes makes it the best chance for team to be called the "Jets" again.
If somehow they find some crazy people with $100M to throw together to buy junk bonds, then the Thrashers will probably be quietly sold and move next season or the season after that.
Lots of people in the AZ news are laughing about how Winnipeg couldn't support a team in the past, so how could they do it now? The main thing that screwed Winnipeg over originally was the low Canadian dollar (70 cents instead of on par like now) and the fact that the team was basically just renting the arena; the company that owned the arena (which has also gone bankrupt since 1996) didn't allow the team any part of the concession or parking revenue that they pulled in.
The new potential owners of the team also own the arena, which is the #3 busiest arena in ALL of North America. Even if the team loses money, the team owners can make up for it with all of the other things that go on throughout the year at the arena. There's at least one big concert per week, conventions, trade shows, etc. Plus, one of the partners is Canada's richest person with a $19 BILLION fortune. He has more money than all of the other team owners combined.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/atlanta-thrashers-moving-to-winnipeg/article2029179/
An agreement to sell the National Hockey League’s Atlanta Thrashers to a Winnipeg group which plans to relocate the franchise to the Manitoba capital is done.
Sources confirmed tonight that preparations are being made for an announcement Tuesday, confirming the sale and transfer of the Thrashers to True North Sports and Entertainment, which owns and operates the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League and the MTS Centre arena, which would become the NHL team’s new home.
Gary Bettman, the commissioner of the National Hockey League, is expected to travel to Winnipeg to make the news official.
The announcement would end months of speculation about whether one of the NHL’s financially-troubled American sunbelt teams might move north, filling the void left when the Winnipeg Jets packed up and left for Phoenix in 1996, where they became the Coyotes.
Much of the talk this spring had centred on that failing franchise, which was bought by the league after being placed in bankruptcy by its former owner Jerry Moyes in 2009.
But sources in Winnipeg suggest that the Thrashers had in fact been the primary target of potential owners Mark Chipman and David Thomson all along, and that some months back, the NHL board of governors quietly approved the sale and transfer of the team, pending the negotiation of a purchase agreement between Atlanta Spirit LLC, the Thrashers’ owners, and True North.
In the meantime, no potential owner materialized who was prepared to keep the team in Georgia, and local governments there showed no interest in propping up the Thrashers.
“There seems to be a consensus there is going to be a team in Winnpeg,” former major league pitcher Tom Glavine, who had tried unsuccessfully to find new ownership for the hockey team in Atlanta, acknowledged last week. ““The question is who, and unfortunately the bullseye seems to be on the Thrashers’ back.”
When it appeared this spring that the Coyotes might also be in play, after a deal to sell the team to Matthew Hulsizer underwritten by a municipal bond issue fell apart in the face of political opposition from the Goldwater Institute, the Winnipeg group sought to take advantage of what suddenly seemed a buyers’ market, with two teams available and no other potential owners or relocations sites on the horizon.
After the City of Glendale agreed to cover $25-million of the Coyotes losses for the 2011-2012 season, and the NHL opted to operate the club in Arizona for at least one more year, True North’s full focus returned to Atlanta, and a deal was hammered out this week.
Even before those final negotiations took place, the potential Winnipeg owners concluded an agreement with the Manitoba government which will allow revenues from a sports bar with slot machine to be used for improvements to the arena, and to be used towards the debt service on the building.
That’s consistent with what Manitoba premier Greg Selinger told reporters earlier this week, when he said that the provincial government had no interest in subsidizing an NHL team, but that the province had financially supported the renovation of the MTS Centre in the past, and would continue to be willing to do so.

May 20th, 2011, 11:23 AM
I read about that this morning. I also read somewhere that the owner of the globe news that it was leaked through is also one of the people trying to buy the thrashers and bring them to winnipeg. So that kind of makes sense. Feel kind of bad for the people who actually want to keep the thrashers in atlanta, hate seeing a team move elsewhere but I'm glad that the jets might be back.
AChimp
May 20th, 2011, 06:06 PM
People in Atlanta just don't care about hockey. I read in some article where they interviewed one of the "fans" there and this guy said something like "Atlanta is a hockey town; people may not like the Thrashers, but they still like hockey so the team should stay."

The city has gone crazy with the news. There have been spontaneous parties everywhere. They closed Portage & Main (Winnipeg's busiest intersection... it's world famous in Canada) for a few hours for street hockey games in the middle of the day. Cars are honking at people wearing Jets jerseys.
I skipped out of work for a bit today with a whole bunch of my coworkers to watch the announcement live. There were several thousand people gathered at the place I was at, all chanting "GO JETS GO," and there were a bunch of other locations around the city with just as many people. There was a big party at the Forks (our big Downtown park area) for most of the day with bands and lots and lots of beer.
I also snapped a really blurry picture of Gary Bettman with all of the other members of the ownership group and the NHL brass as they were walking through the arena. Bettman is not as short as he looks on TV.

All the information that I've heard so far says that they're not going to realign the divisions this year. Winnipeg will be in the Southeast for one season, and they're going to take proposals from a bunch of teams who will need to justify why they should be the team to move to the East. Places like Detroit and Columbus really want to be in the East due to the time differences and travel distance right now.
They also need to wait to see if anything happens with Phoenix, which still has a very good chance of moving. The most likely place would be Quebec City, but they don't have a new arena yet and likely won't for a few years.
I think the plan is to eventually have Winnipeg in the Northwest with Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Minnesota.

Season tickets sold out within a few minutes of going on sale to the general public. The presale for existing season ticket holders from our AHL team went on for three days and sold 7100 of the available 13,000 tickets. The official sell-out time is 17 minutes, but I know a lot of people who had the website tell them that nothing was available within 5 minutes of the tickets going on sale.
I worked it out with a few friends to all try different numbers of seats in different sections, and I was the only one able to get any because I'm really good at the Internet.

Vancouver should take that Schizophrenia test - they looked like the New York Islanders out there.

They knocked Boucher out of the game twice in Philly series. I'm betting they will knock out Luongo again like they did last night
Vancouver will live and die with Luongo. If they take him out it means they've given up.

I think this will be the first Stanley Cup Finals where one team scores over twice as many goals as the other over the course of the series, and still loses the cup. :kreskin

Congrats to Canada for managing to fall short of yet another Stanley Cup, keeping it Stateside where it apparently belongs :lol

I'm glad to see Boston winning the cup tonight. They were more deserving in this series.
Another championship parade for boston, no wonder this city is going broke

I hate the bruins. Their jersey's last night were like super sonic gold though. They definitely outplayed the Canucks.

The Canucks were so bad in the last two games. Boston totally deserves the win.

Has anyone heard anything more about Leclaire? I know that he was suing Ottawa, but hadn't heard anything after that. I really feel bad for the guy.
