Despite some stupid stupid things that have been done with game retail (dead demo after the game comes out? What the hell, guys.), this is shaping up to actually look really awesome. I AM EXPECTING YOU FAGGOTS TO ALL BE PLAYING THIS BY TOMORROW.
I love the loading screen, also.

Top 10 things which make L4D rock:
1. Zombie physics/animation blending.
2. A.I. Director.
3. Accurate, powerful weapons.
4. Dynamic music.
5. Mechanics to encourage team play (smokers/hunters will almost certainly take down anyone that goes rouge).
6. Automatic voice commands ("Weapons here!")
7. The way pipe bombs attract zombies.
8. Tank battles.
9. Perfect melee combat.
10. Level design.

My only real complaint is lack of weapons. It's pretty much just the standard 'Pistol, pistols akimbo, uzi, shotgun, assault rifle, bombs' fare. It needs a large array of gun, preferably real, or otherwise.

Okay, so I played the demo (360, green blood for Germany - yay) 4 times now, with two buddies on advanced. It´s more or less fun but I don´t think it´s worth whatever it may cost (50 $ over at your places, around 60 € over here I´d presume).
The weapons don´t have any good feel to them, apart from the shotgun and the models look really bad in my opinion. What I DO like is the AI-Director and the standart enemies, turns out the not only come running at you ALL the time but shuffle around and stare at walls. Earns them 40% Zombieness.
All in all I´d say it´s an okay game but nothing especially great worth waiting for. On the consoles that is. The PC Version should cost about half of what the console version costs and then it´s a different story already.
But I guess I´ll spend my bucks for the last remnant or something.

Played this with three friends last night. Mindblowing.
We like Advanced difficulty the best, it feels rewarding without being utterly impossible. Expert is still fun, but Advanced just feels like "story mode" and expert is more like an individual challenge in itself. We tried to beat the second map on expert and it took us six tries, and on the sixth we got all the way to the minigun and the witch was there, meaning you HAD to startle her. We tried a strategy to beat her and, um, it didn't work, and the witch is basically a OHK on expert >:
It's really fun to develop strategies and ways to approach the levels--at the beginning of the first map, me and a buddy would drop down the glass ceiling portion while our two friends went down the steps and we absolutely flanked them. Another time we were fighting against a tank in the subways and decided to close ourselves into two identical rooms, two to a room, and shoot outside the window at the tank. It was hilarious, he couldn't get in.
It's really fun to close people out of the saferoom and see how many tries it takes them to get in. There were a few times where I ran to the safe room and my buddies stayed back to fight a tank, so I stole everyone's health and wouldn't let them in.
I only play as Bill, by the way.
EDIT - I also hear playing as a hunter is CRAZY FUN. I play the Spy in TF2, so this'll be great.

This happened to me the first time I played. Me and the black guy went down fighting the last horde brought on by the car alarm on the first level, and Francis ran into the safe room, locked the door, took all our health for the next level, and waited for us to die.
It was awesome.

Just finished downloading and playing it. Bill's so awesome.
I hate zombie shit because it's been done to death (hurrrr) but after watching Shaun of the Dead I was in the mood to blow shit up.
I kinda hate how you can only have one Health Pack at a time, and during one playthrough I decided to blindly charge in with a shotgun because Normal is too easy. I found myself backtracking to the start of the subway chapter to take leftover medkits. I'll try Advanced later. Hopefully that will require a little more thinking.
Also, some 12 year old shmuck was ordering us around. Eventually I ran off on my own in spite of him. He asked "where's the hobo guy?" and I immediately left the game. Fuck that kid. I'm Bill the Badass, and I'll wreck you.

Versus mode is fucking great.
Valve kept it real and don't require the team to get to the end--because, honestly, it's pretty difficult to do so. Infected spawn quickly and the odds seem stacked in their favor.
Boomers and Smokers are my favorites (which is funny, because i thought i'd love being a hunter), but I still haven't played as a Tank.
Three friends and I are gonna play through it on Thursday night, can't wait for it.

The only problem with versus mode is, while the human survivors are devastatingly powerful, once one of them dies, that's the end. Normally for us, this was about five minutes in. So I think that the survivors should at least have the game mode opportunity to have a few extra lives.

At about the fifth time I was a survivor, I just hid in a closet and held still. Apparently they couldn't see me, because I saw the human silhouettes way off in the distance get raped, then when they figured out I was hiding in the beginning, I ran out of the closet onto a roof and jumped to my doom.
My friends are way too serious about that game.

A few friends and I beat the whole thing on Advanced, so I've been playing a lot of versus lately. And it's a fucking mess.
Sometimes there's lag. Sometimes there's Expert difficulty, which you might as well not even bother trying. Sometimes there's an asshole that turns cheats on. Sometimes your entire team is comprised of fuckwits while the other team is strikingly competent, etc. etc.
I don't get it. By simple probabilities, I should get a good game SOMEWHERE and all I'm getting is pile upon pile of horse shit.

Had a really good game tonight. Played Dead Air on expert which took about three and a half hours to complete (even then we needed to knock it down to Advanced after using ~14 restarts on the final showdown). So much fun though. We had a really elaborate plan for the showdown which worked - sort of - but we kept getting killed by the tank.

Nov 25th, 2008, 10:06 PM
Boy, do I have some horror stories for you guys.
So in my search for a single decent random versus game, I came across a team that was strangely competent. Even on Expert mode, me and my two human comrades were escorting our AI Francis with incredible efficiency, making it so far as the second staircase without a scratch. 100 health all around.
...Until, like awaking from a dream, Francis is handed off to JohnnyComeLately53, realizes he has the shotty instead of the uzi (the horror) and subsequently retreats back up the previous staircase without telling anyone. He's immediately smoked and our Louis diligently runs back up the steps to rescue him--and Louis is smoked. This leaves the Zoey and I to the mercy of a Boomer that has suddenly veered around the corner. He vomits on both of us and a hunter pounces me while Zoey tries to fight off the impending horde. Needless to say, we die, and I quit.
THEN.
THEN.
Then I'm on ANOTHER server, this time with another team of dimwits. We make our way down the first staircase and are knocked around a bit--expert mode again. Our human Francis is knocked onto his back and I dutifully run over him to pick him up. On my way over, I spot a Boomer coming our way from the other room. I drop Francis and melee the Boomer...he stumbles backward, incapacitated for the moment. I steady my shotgun for the killing blow after he's done stumbling. I wait. I wait.
Well Francis must not have known what the hell I was doing, as he made it a point to empty an entire pistol clip into the Boomer before he was done stumbling. Needless to say, we're both splashed and I leave yet another team to die.
Why don't I fit in?
EDIT - I forgot to mention the only thing keeping me from hating this game is Francis, who, I don't know if you've noticed, hates fucking everything.
Subways, bridges, zombies, elevators, hospitals, vans, everything.
I sincerely think there's a randomized line of dialogue specifically coded for Francis to say he hates the subject of the previous sentence. It's great and I love him.

I was playing with some friends tonight on Blood Harvest, Versus mode. I don't know who to trust anymore.
We had a bad start--the other team got a tank on the first level and we didn't, so they got a 4x multiplier while we got nothing. We did better the following rounds, slowly closing the gap, until the final round.
First off, everyone but me forgets their health packs. For the finale.
The real problem came when my team happened upon a fork in the road: on the left was a fucking giant stack of hay, completely unguarded and vulnerable to attack. Sure, it looks like fun to climb, but it just LOOKS menacing. Seriously. It's huge, teams could easily be divided into separate sides, etc. etc. To the right is the infamous barn, one of the best Survivor checkpoints in the game, a place where the infected can only come from three directions. This barn is covered on all sides. Making it to this barn is like winning the game. Seriously. This barn is the fucking barn to end all barns. This barn is the new Garden of fucking Eden.
Instinctively, I ran to the barn. I will give you three guesses as to what my team chose.
MetalMilitia
Nov 26th, 2008, 06:41 AM
I think one of your main problems is that you're not shouting at your team enough through a microphone. It's impossible to get a good game going without communication.
As for the barn I've always found it more difficult to defend than the top floor of the house. If two players go in the room directly in front of the stairs and watch the windows, one person stays in the doorway watching the other doors on the landing and one player shoots anything that comes up the stairs you can hold out quite easily till the tank turns up.
Once that happens you need to get downstairs/outside until he's dead then get back to the original positions.
LordSappington
Nov 26th, 2008, 10:51 AM
We were playing Blood Harvest yesterday, and for some reason we're doing especially shitty, even for versus. So we eventually just backtrack to the safe house, and figure we'll just shoot them through the bars. Then we hear this rumbling noise, and figure 'Oh god, good thing we got in the safe house; fucking tanks.'
About ten seconds later, we found out the hard way tanks can rip the safe house doors right the fuck off.
Dammit all.

Has anyone else tried to do a single player campaign on expert?
After failing it several times with friends (two of which were dead weight), I decided I'd give it a go. And it's not as bad as you'd think!
Death Toll was what I tackled, and it really wasn't as difficult as I thought it'd be. The computer players have an assortment of pros and cons that may or may not alleviate a lot of the headaches caused by real teammates.
For instance, it was fucking great to never, ever be shot by friendly fire. Seriously, not once. It was also neat that no matter how bad they looked, they would always end up healing ME. I liked that. It's like they're extra lives or something, just tagging along.
It sucked, though, that my comrades would never, ever pick up the throwable items. Even worse, they can't listen--which means my favorite spot under the boathouse stairs was rendered useless, as my team would continually check on the burning city to see if it was okay.
After losing at the finale tons and tons of times, I finally figured it out: the computer loves miniguns. I don't know about you, but I always completely ignore the mounted gun; I treat it like a witch. But if you get around the gun, the computer will do absolutely everything in their power to protect you. Once I'd started manning the gun, the team was taking literally no damage on either wave.
The tank was a different story, but survivor AI just isn't capable of fleeing, I guess.
MetalMilitia
Jan 5th, 2009, 12:01 AM
Yeah FF is brutal on expert. One poorly aimed shotgun blast will just about kill you from 100% health. Great not having to worry about this with bots.
They're also reasonably smart which makes a change from just about every other shooter out there.
I got Untouchables (complete a finale (dead air in this case) with no survivors taking damage) the other day using bots. Admittedly it was on easy mode but it still took some doing.
Talking of achievements I've only got 5 left to get but they're all fucking hard. Particularly Nothing Special which seems impossible even on easy (though I've not tried with all humans).
Schimid
Jan 5th, 2009, 04:59 AM
I'll probably end up doing the same thing and running through with some bots to get some achievements (Safety First, the no friendly fire one, is at the top of that list). Stomach upset looks tough, but computer boomers are dumb as hell.
I'm still pissed about not having Man v. Tank. I had a great versus round once where, while my entire team was otherwise distracted, I backpedaled from a tank, ran into the safe house, hid behind some boxes, then ran back out as he came in. All of this outrageous antics gave me time to unload three auto-shotgun clips into him. And I didn't get the achievement, presumably because someone else sunk in 10 damage with a rogue pistol ricochet.

I soloed a tank in Blood Harvest once. It was one of the two tanks that attacks during the finale. My other teammates left the game, so I was stuck with three AI that were stuck against a door in the house.
Long story short, the tank chased me all around the crop field as I backpedaled behind everything and unloaded all of my shotgun shells on the fucker.
Then I died as I was running into the military tank at the very end :(

And then we get to play the inevitable free updates that Valve will put up :D
I'm gonna hop on a play Versus. I haven't had a chance to play as the infected yet.
EDIT: I'm really bad as the infected. And being a survivor in versus is really frustrating, since special infected spawn every 15 seconds. It's fun, but I prefer standard co-op.
Oh, and with regards to the Blood Harvest finale, I've found the best place to hide was the closet on the bottom floor of the house. Everyone sits inside, with two people crouching in front and two people standing in back. Take out the first wave, run out to get ammo before the tank comes in. The first floor has enough room to either deal with the tank or run outside. Refill ammo again and go back into the closet for the second wave.
It works on the top floor bathroom too, but there's not enough room to fight a tank upstairs. Also, having the front row armed with shotguns works especially well.

Was playing No Mercy online with some guys, one of which made it a point to drop people halfway through revival, multiple times in a row. Then, when we got to the elevator another guy decided to spin around in circles and fire wildly, peppering the whole elevator and everyone still alive with assault rifle rounds. Even better, the 1st jerk who kept half reviving then dropping people decided to run to the last safehouse before the finale before anyone else could and spammed opening and closing the door a bunch, preventing anybody but him from finishing. Finally, a tank came whilst we were yelling obscenities at the guy and killed everyone but him. It's okay though, at least HE got through alive >:

I was playing no mercy on easy (online) so I could get the achievements for not healing and not disturbing any witches. ANYWAYS, we were at the top floor right before the penultimate safehouse and I got jumped by a smoker, but my teammates were too busy dicking around and killing common undead to help me before I got incapped. Then, one of the AI survivors decided to heal me and I couldn't stop him from healing because L4D sucks. Oh, and there was a witch placed in an unavoidable spot right outside the safehouse door.

If you crown the witch before she gets up you still get the achievement. It's only when she starts running about that you lose it. I had to kill 2-3 to get it because they were in stupid places.
If you get out your med-pack the bot will stop healing you I think. At least that's how it works on PC.

Update details are out:
The first L4D DLC - dubbed the L4D Survival Pack -- is due for release this spring and introduces a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode . A Critic's Choice Edition of the game is also heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack. In addition, for PC gamers and aspiring developers, the first Left 4 Dead release for the Source Software Development Kit (Source SDK) will allow the creation of custom Left 4 Dead campaigns that will be discoverable via L4D's matchmaking system. The SDK update is also due for release this spring, and is free of charge to all owners of L4D on the PC.
"Since Half-Life launched in 1998, Valve has made continuous efforts to expand the offering of its products beyond what's included on the day of launch," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "With Half-Life and Counter-Strike, and more recently Team Fortress 2, we've learned that we're no longer making stand-alone games but creating entertainment services. With Left 4 Dead we're extending that tradition by creating additional gameplay and releasing our internal tools to aspiring developers so they may also create and distribute new Left 4 Dead experiences."

i hate how 90% of the people who play this on versus don't understand how the game works ;/ or probably any game
for example half the team starts jetting off so the infected have problems keeping abreast of us; usually works, but when you have one asshole going really slow who hasn't left the safe room it doesn't help to leave him there to die ;/
plus if he dies, the scores average out so that even if one of you beat the level, you'll still only get 50% ;/ and having 3 people instead of four sucks ;/
and what's with people who will like hide by themselves in a room somewhere at the beginning of a level? are they retarded? People are fucking lucky I don't have a microphone. I would make them feel ashamed to have a brain.
Then they get attacked by a hunter so everyone has to run back to save them. dicks. fucking dicks.
then this one asshole the other day... i had very little health and he ALREADY HAD PILLS AND A MED KIT. SO HE TAKES HIS PILLS, GRABS SOME PILLS THAT HE FINDS, AND THEN USES HIS MED KIT.
WHY.
I killed him >:

Playing L4D without a headset it like trying to beat a baby to death with both hands tied behind your back. It's possible but takes twice as long while being only half as fun.
Well, maybe that's not the best analogy but you get the picture.

i find that people who play with headsets are too retarded to look behind them when they hear noises or even bother looking for the giant red highlighted thing ;\ ;/

At least I learned my lesson about the power of explosives when I threw that molotov at the Tank and lit the whole stairwell (including all of us) on fire. :( I guess I just thought it was napalm or something and would stick to the tank instead of going everywhere. Idk
