CNN:
Scientists have identified new rifts on an Antarctic ice shelf that could lead to it breaking away from the Antarctic Peninsula, the European Space Agency said. The Wilkins Ice Shelf, a large sheet of floating ice south of South America, is connected to two Antarctic islands by a strip of ice. That ice "bridge" has lost about 2,000 square kilometers (about 772 square miles) this year, the ESA said. A satellite image captured November 26 shows new rifts on the ice shelf that make it dangerously close to breaking away from the strip of ice -- and the islands to which it's connected, the ESA said.
So when this "island of ice" breaks away, I would like to be the first to claim ownership of it. Perhaps declare a soveriegn nation state and then habor terrorists there. How does one "call dibs" on a newly formed land mass drifting through international waters?

I would be willing to hire a team of international lawyers to enact the "finders keepers" pact which took effect after WWI in response to the "he who smelt it delt it" act of 1905.

I think you just need a flagstaff with a banner of your face(or other nefarious design) flapping in the wind and it yours officially.

So if I had a flag with a lion fucking a giraffe I would have a seat in the United Nations? I would settle for a folding chair.

All bullshit aside, if I owned or rented one of those planes on skis we could hire a beer company to throw a novelty promo party there. Like the one budwieser did in Taktiuktuk.

I'm down for beer party. At the very least we wouldn't need a freezer.

Didn't a couple of hippies start their own nation on an old oil rig off the Isle of WIght? I think they forcibly removed, or maybe I'm completely mistken about all of it.

I think a British wealthyman bought an oil rig and declared independance 10-15 years ago. I think he is still going strong. Located just past international water line away from England.

here it is it's actually a small sea fort not an oil rig. It even has a deck gun! non-functional though.
