Zero V2

More specifically, games which you may download and are free to play on the computer, or maybe even console in some cases (or for those who are very tech savy, GP2X).
For any of those who are a fan of bullet hell shooters, or who like 16-Bit graphics in general, I seriously reccommend XOP. It's built like one, it runs like one, and it plays like one as well, and it's a very good game with some nice variety for a top-down shooter.
If you're awesome at dodging hundreds of bullets at the same time, you should get XOP Black. Think of XOP, without special weapons, with five times the difficulty.
If you've got any suggestions to add, or if you're looking for reccommendations, then please don't hesitate to speak.

warning forever, a shooter with only boss fights
uhh dwarf fortress is basically still in alpha but the combat system is so fun in adventurer mode, plus the world history generator is actually getting pretty complex now :( it's sort of hard to describe the actual fortress mode apart from saying it's like simcity meets nethack
i've heard people pile praise on la-mulana but i thought it was just too fucking hard >: it's a platforming game that's apparently meant to be like the games on the old MSX
uhh is betrayal at krondor free still? good rpg based on raymond feist's books (the story was actually written by feist)

it's actually a freeware port/remake of the 3do version which had full speech and intro/ending movies, which is actually a pretty big improvement on the pc version (which only had nifty .mod music for the alien encounters)

Spelunky is an interesting game. It's made by Derek Yu (dude who made I'm O.K., another freeware game that was made for Jack Thompson's video game challenge a few years ago.)

It's a simple game that combines platforming with Rogue-Like, but the draw is that there are tons of mechanics involved to keep things interesting, like certain booby traps that can be triggered, princesses that you can rescue or throw as a weapon, and a merchant that you can buy from, steal from, or kill. Then there's all sorts of weapons and power-ups. I'd give it a B+.
Also, I hear Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden is supposed to be really funny. I haven't tried it yet.

EDIT: Speaking of Cave Story, you haven't played that until you've played on the PSP. Looks awesome in the screen, and the button setup is perfect.
