I just briefly watched her talking this morning and it struck me how much like Angelina Jolie she looked. 18 kids is a metric shit ton, but there isn't a backlash against this because the parents are somewhat well off and provide their kids a clean and loving home. The dad is also a real estate agent and owns a bunch of property.

Yes, DHS in many large cities does a piss poor job of protecting children that need protection. In Philly a special needs child (CP and mild MR) was left with her mother even though the estranged father had alerted authorities that he feared abuse and/or neglect. DHS did not have the resources to oversee more than about 20% of their cases, so this particular case was subcontracted to a somewhat disreputable agency. Records were falsified, visits that never happened were recorded as being satisfactory. The upshot was that the girl died of malnutrition and sepsis (bedsores, from being left in one position for days at a time) and Mom was brouht up on charges. DHS took it on the chin, with several caseworkers being fired - the major FU to the city was that Mom (!) and Dad filed suit against DHS and the city stating they should have taken the child.

This occurred over a year ago, and the ramifications are still being felt throughout the system. Adoptions are on the rise, and parents whose children are in the system are being held to a higher standard of fitness. Foster parents are being given more rights at an earlier time, and the children are FINALLY being given the right to grow up without fear of abuse or neglect - there is a time limit (guideline) that is being adhered to of roughly 15-22 months in the system where a decision must be made as to a permanancy plan for a child who is a ward of the state.

It's sad that children must die in such circumstances for any substantive changes to occur.

Lordy, she is crazyo. My Child Development teacher told us about another woman who was like Suleman. This woman had a little daughter who always came to visit her grandparents dirty and sick. Her mother was unmarried and had gotten pregnant as a teenager. She refused her parents' offer for financial aide and moving in with them because she didn't want to lose her welfare apartment. Octomom's Clan to Receive Free 24-Hour Care, Gifts

The California mother of octuplets has received a plentitude of gifts and a small army of volunteers to help prepare for her babies' homecoming.
The shower of gifts for Nadya Suleman and other support was detailed during Suleman's appearance on an episode of the "Dr. Phil" show that aired Wednesday.
On the show, a non-profit organization called Angels in Waiting promised Suleman 24-hour care for her 14 children — the octuplets as well as her six older children.
In a press release from the "Dr. Phil" show, the group estimates caring for the octuplets will cost approximately $135,000 per month, and it is asking for donations from the public.

Linda West-Conforti, co-founder of Angels in Waiting, says the children will need 12 providers a day.
"Caring for preemies is considerably more involved than caring for a newborn healthy baby," West-Conforti said on "Dr. Phil."

She added that the providers will be taught how to duplicate Suleman's techniques of mothering to create an environment conducive for them to bond with their mother — including burping, feeding and rocking them in the same way.

As part of childcare training there is a clause that one must sign stating it is your legal responsibility to report anything suspicious regarding the health and welfare of a child. If it is deemed (after the fact) that children were neglected or abused, and there were signs and you as an individual ignored those signs, YOU GO TO JAIL! No exceptions. No excuses.

Nadya, you dumb fuck, it doesn't matter if you pay them or not, if you're criminally neglecting your children, a childcare professional will report you to DHS.

Oh, BTW, the bitch says that now she will be paying ... excuse me we will be paying ... for in-home nursing care for her children.

EDIT - She also claims that "OctoDad" (or as I like to refer to him, "OctoDonor") is a foreign-born platonic friend who was "angry" with her for this whole mess. (At least he sounds sane.) She says in the article that she will never ever reveal his name; apparently when she stated this during the interview one of her children asked who their daddy was, and she ignored the child. Yes. This won't cause any undue distress in the family unit. :explode

To be super-realistic, she probably had no idea she was going to carry all 8 to viability. She might have refused the "reduction", but her doctors probably told her one or more of the babies would not survive.

As soon as she knew they were going to, though, she should have made the responsible decision (the decision many, many, MANY people before her have agonized over and eventually made), to give the children up for adoption. If she had done that, childless families would be thrilled....I assure you, THRILLED....to provide for those babies' every need.

She would go down in history as the remarkable lady who birthed octuplets and then did something wonderful and responsible.

Instead, it just all went to shit.
