View Full Version : Strange and obscure toylines from your childhood

Okay, now I got this idea from the wonderful blog Weirdo Toys (http://weirdotoys.com/), and I was wondering, do you remember any really weird toylines from your childhood that nobody else seems to remember? Or do you know of any that aren't uber-obscure, but they bear mentioning because they're just so weird?

I've been trying to track down a complete set of Nightmare Warriors toys for a while now actually. They were just like the He-Man & The Masters Of The Universe toyline, only they were all skeletons. They weren't very popular, but I love me a good skeleton toy and would love to have the complete set sometime.

Hey, I just saw that I was getting traffic to the Weirdo Toys blog from this site. I didn't even know this place existed. I have a lot to investigate.

Anyway, I'm gonna try to hang around some in join in some discussions. See you around I hope.

Oh, and here's a quick link to the Nightmare Warriors (http://www.weirdotoys.com/2008/06/08/nightmare-warriors-by-mtc/). I had 5 of them when I featured them on the blog, but I have since found the last one I needed. I'll update the article sometime soon I hope.

Hey Gammo, welcome aboard. Cool blog man. Really good to see the Nightmare Warriors in nice photos like that. Definitely let me know when you've updated it with all 6 of them standing together. I've been trying to track them down for a while now, but nobody seems to have 'em or even remember 'em. It's a damn shame too since they looked so fantastic.

You mean that spinoff of the Gobots called Rocklords (http://toyarchive.com/Rocklords.html)?

Yeah, well, strange thing is, they actually seem like they were pretty well made high-quality toys. Shame the concept was so stupid. It just goes to show, that although you can polish a turd (As Mythbusters has proven), it's still a turd. And Gammo, you should totally take a look at them on your Weirdo Toys blog.

And those Nightmare Warriors look kick-ass! I wonder if anyone's tried to use them for a custom improved Scare-Glow figure?

I don't have any of the Killer Klowns, but you can see some of the toys I've featured on the blog in the gallery (http://www.weirdotoys.com/gallery/). Just click on the thumbnails to read about each one.

The Rock Lords were a GoBots thing. I had one as a kid. it was pretty lame. Transforming into rock in general is pretty lame.

I dunno, I still prefer the Rock Lords over the Meteorbs:

It's still hard for me to believe Masters of the Universe toys ever got that awful.

As for GoBots, no matter what people say about 'em, I'll always love the Super GoBots "Psycho" figure.

Yeah, I was done with He-Man by the time those things came out. I think I stopped around the time Rokon and Stondar were released. They too transformed into rocks.

My mom once bought me a garbage bag full of He-Man toys. It included the one figurine that stank (on purpose!) and they had all been kept in the same box so they all kind of adopted the smell of plastic and skunk shit.

I fucking loved the Monsters in my Pocket line, and eventually I stopped being able to find them, so I started collecting these weird monsters that came in plastic, purplish eggs. I specifically remember one that looked like a grown up, very mean version of the ghoulie that pops out of the toilet on all of the promo artwork for the original movie.

Yeah those were pretty damn cool. Problem is, much like the Manglors (http://www.i-mockery.com/minimocks/manglor-mountain/) toyline, they're hard to find these days because of the nature of the toys. Most of the ones you do find are opened and their bags already dissolved. If you find 'em in an unopened package, they usually cost a pretty penny.

I remember that at one point, I collected a bunch of monsters in my pocket from cereal boxes. I had a shitload of them as a kid but lost them all over the years. Fuck :(

My favorite was the werewolf (#3) http://www.toyarchive.com/MIMP/MIMP6.gif

Also, I apparently had all of these exclusives. Fuck! I specifically remember almost losing Anubis in the sand in a playground near my house :(

Yeah, people still go nuts over those things. Some of the figures cost quite a bit nowadays. I know how ya feel though... I distinctly remember a yard sale where I sold my ENTIRE G.I. Joe collection (I think I was 14 or 15 at the time) for $50. This included one of my all-time favorite playsets:

http://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/86/terrordrome/terrordrome_box.jpg
I loooooooved how the middle opened up so you could make the Firebat fly out of it. It was so badass. Someday I'm gonna get 'em all back, but for now, I have no room for that stuff so I have to wait... and watch the prices rise. >:

Also, isn't it great how Serpentor is commanding the Drednok on the right to fire that gun even though he can't possibly see through that steel wall? Blind aggression! Cobraaaaaaa!

My big plans for these guys (I probably had around 30) included a tidal wave of green slime. The slime came in a plastic can and had a wonderful aroma halfway between play-doh and shampoo.

The slime flowed thick that day, my friends, and left my M.U.S.C.L.E. men corroded with a flaky green crust that didn't budge for at least 15 years.

My brother went through a brief Star Trek: TNG phase and had one of these transporter toys:

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn199/kitsa_for_imockery/startrektoy.jpg

It was clunky but sturdy, about as big around as a frisbee. When you hit the button, the light would go bright-dim-bright and it would play that "beaming" sound effect.

He had it in a toy chest along with just about everything he'd ever stolen from me (gum, VHS tapes, various other important kid shit). I would sneak in to recover my stolen items when he was away. I found the toy on its side and became curious as to whether the batteries still worked. I held it up, hit the button, and when the lights stopped flashing there was a gigantic fucking wolf spider in the chamber. It scared the bejesus out of me, and I dropped the thing and ran.

We lived out in the woods and wolf spiders were a common sight in our house. One also climbed out of a typewriter when I was doing a report, and that did it for me and typewriters.

I really hate the concept of toys that have hologram stickers, the toys were not that great, you could't get them wet and they were crappy toys that were made for only a year most times. Also, you bring them to school to play with at recess, kids would make fun of your crappy toys. That's why I sat in the computer lab and played Gemstone Warrior (http://www.mobygames.com/game/gemstone-warrior) and Alternate Reality:the city (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_Reality_%28computer_game%29) any chance I could(no the school didn't have them I brought them from home, and they were cooler then the lame toys I'd get for the holidays).

Seriously, in my opinion you are one of the worst breeds of people on the internet, that of the troll. You fling your vile muck across the boards hoping that it hits someone squarely in the face, spreading your tumorous bile across the forum by hijacking threads and running them into the ground. Your words shine with the intelligence of a retarded lemur, and with all the subtlety of a fallign anvil. Your sole purpose on these forums seems to be to pop your pustulous head into threads, pee on them, and then refuse to leave. I have asked ROG to ban you, but he has not responded as of yet (Although I assume it's for a good reason), so all I can do is send you this invictive: Die in Fire.
