My problem with it is how godawful stupid the blue creatures look. I'm not talking about my general dislike for CGI, I'm talking about the actual design of the creatures looks ridiculous. The story itself may be interesting for all I know, but the look of it all makes me want to punch the screen every time I see a trailer for it.

Well apparently its not too much higher then other big blockbuster movies produced nowdays but the number does seem ridiculous. He also invented a new camera technology where he could see his cgi effects play out in real time with the footage he was shooting so I'm sure that cost a few dozen million.

Ever since the first trailer that I saw for this movie, I've thought that it looks so uninteresting. I have to agree that every time I see those blue things I wonder why they made them look like that. Is it so that they could make toys out of them?

see, last semester there was a section in one of my classes about online identity and avatars etc etc etc, so just by that information the concept of the movie immediately sounded interesting (human mind into an alien "avatar" body; like a physical realization of internet avatars and what not), and yes it does indeed look pretty. but if 20 years is what it has taken just for something that looks nice, then i dunno

He doesn't need to reprove himself at all. What the fuck are you talking about? He has made some of the most successful and highest grossing films of all time and if the studio felt that he needed to reprove himself he wouldn't of been green lighted the largest Hollywood movie budget in history for this film with basically free reign to do the film as he wanted to do it.

And again, this is a guy who won't shut the fuck up about how cool he thinks his story is, because he devoted 12 years to it. It's kinda like that delusional guy who made Bob's Game and went batshit because Nintendo wouldn't publish it. I'd laugh if this sold worse than New Moon.
I don't think it's bad because he's narcissistic, or because he may or may not be rusty. I just don't see anything special about this other than the tech used to make it. Just because the guy who made Terminator made this doesn't mean everything he touches turns to gold.
Besides, I don't really know anyone who's excited about this film who wasn't stage crew for the film. I'll gladly wait to rent this.

What didn't you like about the movie? Was it the acting? The plot? It couldn't have been the CGI because it was pretty goddamn epic and unlike any other movies I've ever seen. The plot was simple and unoriginal but it wasn't terrible. My only peeve was the battle in the end of the movie that mildly disrupted the flow of the movie because it was pretty corny. I saw it last night. I'm a big fan of 3D movies in general and have gone to quite a few so far this year. The 3D effects are all top notch. The world of Pandora was very well detailed and all the creatures were interesting. The bright colors of the world and the creatures was also quite a sight (:hypno). The plot was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be, although some dialogue was noticeably very bad. My only real complaint is it felt way to long. The middle of the movie dragged on with barely an action sequence in sight and way to much romance filler. The action in the beginning and the end of the movie was all excellent. Worth seeing in theaters thou because of the great quality 3d effects and i also thought the sound of the movie seemed of very high quality. just maybe wait until the theaters are less crowded so your able to stretch a little when hour two hits and you realize you still have like 40 minutes to go.
I also imagine if you saw this movie in 2d that it would not be nearly as enjoyable to look at because it was made with the 3d effects as the prime focus

Its a visual treat. The plot is something you will be able to sit through. You use your eyes to look at a movie and this one happens to be very pretty and fun to look at. It relies heavily on the 3d just like movies rely on pretty action sequences nowadays( see sherlock holmes)

okay so, last night i went to see avatar in imax and 3d. we got there two hours in advance, but they were sold out, like completely, they'd been sold out forever, but the ticket dude pulled us aside and sold us them anyway. (yay!)
so we get our tickets, and we're planning on leaving, going to do w/e for two hours, but then we see the line. the nerd line for those that were there three hours in advance just to get a center seat. so instead of leaving, we start talking to some of the people in the line, who tell us that if we don't get in the line, we probably won't even be able to sit together.
anyway, the film itself was spectacular and i'm not just saying that because i got an awesome viewing experience -- it was really great. i'm incredibly picky and i haven't enjoyed a movie in years. my only complaints with this were some cheesy dialog and the creepy smurf sex :x

I really enjoyed this. It had a weak generic story, and the iraq/native american metaphors were artlessly obvious, but the emotional development was excellent so when we got to the action it had a terrific satisfying punch to it. All of these things would make a mediocre film, but the visuals were just so outstanding they ended up in the backseat and more served to flesh out the movie properly. It didn't feel at all like I was watching a cartoon, as most cg film feel like to me.

I watch 90 percent of my movies at home with my entertainment system. I hear well when I'm wearing my hearing aids but a lot of time I don't understand what the actors are saying. I'd just go see a movie just for the action or the visuals on the big screen. I would pay the same price for tickets as senior citizens. But Avatar was easy to follow and understand even without the subtitles for several reasons, one is being that the story was cliche and had been done before. They also have this invention called rear window captioning which sucks ass. I saw it during dark knight and I spend 75 percent of the time adjusting the window. RWC explained here

It wasn't all that bad. Sure the Pocahontas colonialism theme has been played out, but the world (Pandora) was so well designed from the hardware, creatures and the terrain. Its like a flight of fancy to an distant alien world. Sure the aliens were kinda cute with their big eyes and slender faces, but It just tied in with the aesthetics to make them more emotive and easier for us to relate to as characters. Although I prefer alien design that are less "humanoid" like District 9 ^.^

EDIT: Now that I think about it, that makes perfect sense. Except the movie should feature Marine Boy.

Titanic really sucked so bad I couldn't stand to watch the whole thing. However, Avatar in 3D was one of the most amazing movies I have seen.
The story was a bit weak, but the 3D animation was amazing. I would recommend seeing it in 3D before it is out of theaters.

"In an adjusted-for-inflation, all-time box-office top 10 (compiled by Dergarabedian), "Gone With the Wind" is the easy winner, with George Lucas' 1977 "Star Wars" in the No. 2 slot, with $1.26 billion in grosses, followed by 1965's "Sound of Music," 1982's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and 1956's "The Ten Commandments."
Jim Cameron's "Titanic" comes in at No. 6 on the chart (with $955 million) while "Avatar" doesn't even come close to making the top 10, with a mere $558 million in grosses."

no avatar related depression here. i have no desire to be a blue hippie. i like my username, tadao. its funny that you claim i failed at making something of myself on the internet as if thats a goal people aside from tila tequlia should pursue or something i aim to achieve. this is a general message board where people mock people and refuse to have any sort of intelligent conversation. i could care less if anything memorable comes out of what i post. i dont put effort into imockery lol. its not my site. i like the owner rog and enjoy conversing with him from time to time and reading his articles is always a good time but if the site closed tonight then id say oh well and go read an article somewhere else. you even said yourself, i post occassionally and spend alot less of my life on the internet then you. its ok. make your mark on the web.
now to move on. i would like to see the movie a second time on the mega imax in nyc. we have one on long island that im pretty sure is going to go out of business soon(they failed to get the last big non 3d imax release) but that one is not capable of showing 3d. i think the one in nyc does have that ability thou and i imagine seeing a 3d movie on a screen that big could be a trip.
any real imax theaters by any of you guys? not these new rip off digital imax theaters popping up everywhere. the mega imax screens are truly something amazing for a movie fan if you get a good seat up high in the middle. they have made like a whole new degree of stadium seating. im pretty sure if shaq sat in a row in front of you he wouldnt block ur view or only a small since the average persons head is well below your feet.

I finally decided to see it this past weekend before it goes out of 3D.
And it is pretty (Pandora glows like a Christmas tree at night).
I'm sure I was affected by the insane over-hype the movie has, but it definitely didn't live up to it.
"Lack of originality" is quite the understatement in my book.
But I still enjoyed it somewhat.
Why on earth did they create an entirely new planet and not put any new creatures in it?
You've got horses, lions, rhinos, hyenas, jellyfish, and dragons. And even the Navi are clearly supposed to be Indians.
The only new things I saw were the helicopter bugs. It made no sense, and really bugged me the whole movie.

It's not? I hadn't heard anything about there not being any original creatures.
The reason I know the dog-things were in fact Hyenas and not wolves or something is because they make the same exact sound as Hyenas!
No original creatures certainly spoiled the movie for me. :(

Specifically, Protoclown's review:
"All kinds of interesting alien and plant life is shown in the movie, and the amount of detail and effort
they put into designing and creating this alien world is truly impressive."
I didn't figure he would gush like that if it was only copies of real and mythical earth creatures.
I'm not trying to say I hated the movie, I was just really disappointed.

I can't fault Protoclown for his review. It's really hard to stretch, "Cameron steals from Pocahontas and Ender's Game and makes it last almost 3 hours" into at least 2 paragraphs :P
Essentially it is like a beauty contest contestant. Nice to look at but shallow and predictable.
