Is being a catholic really considered one of the harder religions? I always thought catholics were some of the more non fundalmentalists when it comes to different types of christian faiths. i think catholics getbad rap because we have the vatican always making absurd declarations that the average lay person doesn't pay much heed too atleast in america.

My ex-fiance from a while back was Russian Orthodox so I was in the middle of converting to it when I found out she was trash. They have some different traditions that I was used to but I really liked the idea of their priests actually being able to marry and have a family compared to the Catholic church where everyone is celebate. Might as well as be Cenobites.

WHAT IF GOD EXISTED BUT WASNT ANTHROPOMORPHOUS :( or i guess i should ask do you think god could exist if it were non-anthropomorphous ? would it even be worth calling it god?

i guess religion would still be useless though maybe. No point in worshipping something that prolly wouldn't (be capable of?) see (ing) value in being worshipped.

kahljorn
Jan 24th, 2010, 07:27 PM
Our instinct to seek out an eternal paternal figure would be thwarted if god didn't look like us.

that sort of begs the question of whether there is a god or not, but I'm sure that you know that.

Supafly345
Jan 24th, 2010, 10:46 PM
Yeah, I want to believe in a god, but I don't think any of the myths we have created so far could possibly be correct. And I don't think I should have to make a decision whether there is one or not really. If there is one it probably doesn't exist in any form we have imagined yet, or it may no longer exist at all.

Wouldn't that be a huge pile of shit, if god used to exist but no longer does?

kahljorn
Jan 24th, 2010, 11:00 PM
I think its ridiculous to think that the potential falsity of the myths about god have anything to do with whether or not he exists. Just because the myths are wrong doesn't mean that there is not a god. Just like its ridiculous to draw the conclusion that, because the myth that hell is in the center of the earth is probably false, there must therefore not be a center of the earth.
As for the later part I would point out that you've already done so, but you were prolly joking so who knows really :O

Supafly345
Jan 24th, 2010, 11:15 PM
Huh? I think you jumped to the conclusion that I was trying to dis prove god. I said exactly what you just said- that the myths are just myths and they don't effect whether I believe in god or not.
ALL I WANTED WAS TO BE TOLD HOW INTERESTING MY HYPOTHESIS OF A GOD THAT CEASED EXISTING WAS.

Zhukov
Mar 8th, 2010, 11:15 AM
Why would you congratulate someone who is straying from the paved path of science and wisdom, and wandering foolhardily down the filthy track of ignorance and myth?

Not that OAO ever had any wisdom.

TheCoolinator
Mar 8th, 2010, 11:32 AM
To be honest I would usually just say an indifferent "OK" to a person who has just told me that he / she converted to a different religion but since I'm was in a good mood I believe a "congrats" was in order. And to think of it, Its very difficult to actually go and take religious classes these days. Everyones lives are full of distractions and are very hectic. My brother-in-law had to do it as well before him and my sister got married. It was difficult for him going to seminars, taking tests, reading books, then the ending ceremonies.

Regarding the whole Science and wisdom and ignorance and myth thing.

I think of religion is similar to philosophy on many levels. You read it. Decipher the meanings of the text individually and go out into your life trying to use them to the best of your abilities.

Example: If I read Plato's Republic I get an idea of how Socrates in book 1 defined Justice. Virtue and Wisdom. While when I read the new testament I see how (God, Jesus whoever) define goodness. Charity, mercy, benevolence. All it is, is more information that can be used to better ones self and better the community as a whole in real life. If used properly.

Science is great and all but in the past few years I've lost a lot of faith in it. I read too many articles of Pharmaceutical companies killing people with their medicine and other nefarious dealings in the realm of big business controlling the funding for "scientific" studies.

The Leader

That's not really science, that's pharmaceutical companies and big business.

We know that but does everyone else?

It takes a ton of people dropping dead for there to be a recall of some of these medications and now take a look at the whole "Global Warming / Climate change" thing. They just found out that some scientists were fudging the numbers. It took a hacker to break into their e-mail accounts and get copies of the letters where the head of the "science" team was telling the rest of the underlings to make the climate measurements higher then they really were.

Like I said above, in the past few years I don't trust anything that's being said by so called "experts" or "scientists". Most of them are just paid prostitutes for whoever is funding them. Only on seldom occasion we see a whistleblower or an act of God (no pun intended) to bring the truth to the surface.

I mean, look at the blatant hypocrisy of Keith Olbermann. He hated everything that Bush did but when Obama continues the same exact polices it's OK.

Very true

But I since the whistle has been blown on this scam it's pretty much over. The climate scientists have been found to screw around with the numbers. I don't blame them. If I had a steady job as a climate priest and had to keep saying the sky is falling I would definitely tell everyone who I'm working with to change all the numbers to suit our best interest. Meaning my paycheck.

I think we can go a little further though by saying that many wallstreet investment houses wanted the climate bill to get passed because it would have created a speculative market in carbon trading making a new bubble for corporations to hook on too.

I think the genius of this plan is labeling carbon dioxide as a pollutant. By labeling CO2 as a deadly chemical the regulators will focus directly on that and completely ignore more harmful chemicals such as Volatile Organic Compounds, Mercury oxides, Lead Oxides, sulphur oxides, and numerous other hazardous gases. This is why many of the funders of the Global Warming scheme are big oil and large multinational corporations.

Also look who they choose to be the spokesman for the Global Warming craze. Al Gore. Mr. FREE TRADE.

Anyone in this forum who is unemployed should be thanking Mr. Gore for shipping your jobs to a slave camp in China. Oh, and 3rd world nations don't give a rats ass about Global Warming / Climate Change. China, India, Africa, and ever other country that has a brain is going to completely ignore it because if they don't they will be as penniless as the USA.

I know it's difficult to comes to terms with, I believed the hoax when I was still in college but once you see whos behind the curtain you understand why they are so quick to keep the deception going. It's all about making money. Not protecting the environment.

Scientists at the heart of the Climategate controversy face new allegations which cast further doubt about global warming. Analysis shows researchers had tried to suppress key details of their findings for twenty years.

New allegations swirl in Climategate (http://rt.com/Top_News/2009-12-07/spin-climategate-science-thriller.html), which began last November with an email leak at the University of East Anglia, suggesting that one of the world’s foremost centres for climate research had been manipulating data to prove the existence of man-made global warming.
Now, it turns out data manipulation has been going on since at least 1990

I see some people are emotionally invested in this stuff. Bottom line is I don't believe a word of it and I think the Achilles heel of the whole argument is that they are calling CO2 a pollutant when there are far worse gasses that will not be regulated if a climate bill is passed.

Again, that's scientists, not science. Reading the bible and understanding the moral subject matter of it isn't being a Catholic.

Being a Catholic means believing in an almighty creator, and giving praise to him. Religion is created by man, where science is created by physics/universe etc etc.

Hi collinater, please explain to me without using another video, why your opinions are valid. Do it now.

This is what I gathered from my research. I don't mean to hoist my ideology on anyone else. I respect everyones opinions and ideas the real problem comes when people get bent out of shape because we don't see eye to eye. Which is understandable but we need to come to the realization that we all have different points of views that we have been cultivating throughout our lives. Not one persons journey is the same.

(breaks out acoustic guitar and starts singing some hippy song)

That would mean that they aren't real scientists then, wouldn't it?

I think the real problem is that some viewers think they are. They wheel out some guy with "scientist" under his name to defend which ever corporation atrocity that has just taken place.

It goes something like this:

The "scientist" when prompted will immediately say...."EVERYTHING IS FINE, SCIENTIFIC STUDIES SAY THAT TOXIC WASTE IS GOOD FOR THE OCEAN AND GIVES YOUR A BRIGHT ATTRACTIVE SMILE....IM A SCIENTIST....BELIEVE ME....LOOK I'M EVEN WEARING A FANCY LAB COAT, pocket protector, AND GLASSES."

you get where I'm going with this. It's tough now a days to actual find an independent researchers.

Actually, it isn't tough, but you have to know where to look. :\

This kind of pseudo-science also annoys the heck out of me. It doesn't take much more than a pair of safety glasses, a few test tubes and some colored liquid to convince most people that an actor is a scientist. Look at CSI for example (it's really quite a funny show, from a real scientist's perspective).

What bothers me the most about your stated viewpoints are the blatant discounting of one side of a given story simply because of a single or very few isolated events. As an example, take the climate change debate, for lack of a better term, which is much more complex and convoluted than you, or anyone else for that matter makes it seem. Just because of some e-mails, this throws everything into doubt? Please. You cannot throw away years of data much of which was collected before most of us on this forum were born (or our parents or grandparents for that matter) just on the basis of a few "suspect" points.

The bottom line is that we still have much more that we don't know about climate change than what we do know. It is an insanely complex phenomenon, made even more so by local variations in weather patterns (which allows bozos like O'Reilly or Hannity make cracks about global warming during a very cold winter in DC). I've seen some people on this forum (myself included) complain bitterly about the snowfall in the northeastern US. "Send some of that global warming our way!" The bottom line is that even with this local variance, the average global temperature at sea level is still rising. This trend will not be stemmed by any one course of action, nor is it clear that it is not part of the normal cycle of climate for our planet over millennia. What is clear is that adding to greenhouse gas emissions through technological advancement in third world countries will exacerbate the situation, and adds to pollution of the local environment in any event. Curbing this action is the right thing to do in the long run, whatever the reasoning.

Politics and science have become intermingled, and the truth suffers. :(

Fathom Zero
Mar 9th, 2010, 12:26 PM
I'm keen to see if we can discern whether or not this is actually part of a larger weather pattern, since recordings of temp. and other things have only been around since the industrial revolution. Correct me on the date if I'm wrong, (I probably am), but the instrumentation hasn't existed for all of recorded history all around the world.

I need to look at all of these ice samples they seem to find, too.

You can't suspend skepticism, Cooli. IT'S THE FOUNDATION OF GOOD SCIENCE.

Colonel Flagg
Mar 9th, 2010, 12:46 PM

Back up what? How global warming is a complete fraud mythology pseudo-religion created by corporate donors so they are not regulated and how they can start a speculative derivative market on carbon trading while playing upon the frail emotions of the ignorant masses?

STOP CARBON!!!! ....even though its not a pollutant and has nothing to do with the warming cycle and is actually beneficial for plant development.......

What they need to do is instead of attempting to create a carbon bubble which would lower all of our living standards similar to when gasoline was 5 dollars a gallon, they should be pumping money into clean energy.

Solar panels on everyones house
Geothermal
tidal power
Methane
Biodiesel
Alcohol
Hydrogen (Brown's gas)

and so on and so forth. Just these industrial drivers alone would create millions of jobs but they don't want to do that. They just want to harp on CARBON CARBON CARBON....which makes no sense. Carbon is not a pollutant. Its a beneficial gas. Why aren't the global warming priests harping on how they need to ban hexanes, Volatile organic compounds, diesel fuel (replace it with biodiesel), mercury oxides, arsenic oxides, sulpher oxides, nitrogen oxides, petroleum based fertilizers and herbicides, fungicides, rodenticides, depleted uranium, all of these need to be regulated out of existance but all they focus on is CARBON....OOOOOOO CARBON.....

Ok, I guess i backed up my point and I'm a little bit closer to break time. Woot!
