View Full Version : I forgot to Enrol to Vote

Zhukov

Although I was SURE that I already did, apparently my name isn't in their database.

Now, I have to vote tomorrow.. today... and it takes 24 hours to enrol, so I can't do it now.

Should I turn up and hope that I am enroled, or stay in bed and just pay the fine for failing to vote?

You get fined for not voting?! :eek If your not enrolled but you show up do you still get fined?

They still let people vote in Australia?

Can't help - I'm from America, land of the free, where we exercise our right to not vote, then complain about the government full-time.

I wish they'd throw people in jail for not voting - that would be awesome. Most of FOX News would be broadcasting from behind bars.

I don't understand that logic.

Crisis Averted.

I turned up at the polling booth and gave them my name, and when they couldn't find it on the list they used my previous enrollment from my old address. The wonders of technology!

Obviously I voted for the Socialist Alliance party. Without my vote they would take a pretty large drop in their personal percentages.

It is illegal not to vote, and they fine you $20 if you don't. I failed to vote once before (I was going through a VOTING IS WORTHLESS phase... well I guess it sort of still is, but I have changed my reasoning) and they send you a form to fill out explaining why you didn't. I filled in the blank space with "had a headache" and that seemed to do the trick since I wasn't fined.

If you aren't enrolled (I was enrolled at a different location - are you following?) but turn up to vote, then you get a ten second head start before they set the dogs onto you.

I don't think it should be illegal to abstain. I guess you can turn up and draw a cock on the ballot paper, but that still means you have to put on trousers and go to a polling station.

:lol I bet Bill O'Reilly would even cut off other inmates. Would love to see him on OZ for ONE episode.

That's awesome. I'm glad you're not jailed.

edit: Also, to bring light to your voting dilemma I went to outback steakhouse last night.

What about that "no rules just right" slogan? I bet they really don't mean it. :(

EDIT - I mean left, of course.

Funny, here in the U.S. you're automatically registered to vote when you get your driver's license. Do they do something like that or is it a different system?

I'm still indecisive on whether it's a good thing to fine a person who didn't vote. Eitherway it's interesting. What kind of political parties do you have there? We have quite a few here in the US but the only ones allowed on television are the blues and reds.

The Leader

We have a lot of parties in the US but we're actually a two party system. The ones on the tv are the only ones that matter even though they're practically the same. Don't go around acting like the US has a free, true democracy, you fascist collaborator.

The reds and blues aren't the only ones that matter. They are just the ones that are supported. It's a controlled debate. They can't allow different ideas to contaminate the prescripted theatre.

and the US is a republic. Not a democracy. We just choose our representitives through democratic elections.

No shit Sherlock. And the Democrats and Republicans are the only ones that matter because they're the ones in control.

It's a representative democracy, you pillock. If you don't like the way that guy votes, vote for a different guy. OR RUN YOURSELF! :eek

And the ideological parties, which are the ones that aren't "the two", don't do as well because they adhere to an ideology and therefore have a smaller membership. Which is to say that they're more rigid in their ideals than Democrats and Republicans.

The Leader
Mar 25th, 2010, 12:16 PM
It's a republic. The idea of a representative democracy is a contradiction.

Democracy is actually what, for reasons which I don't understand, is taught in High Schools as being called "direct democracy." No one actually uses that term, though. Democracy can only be direct; individuals voting without a representative. What is taught as "representational democracy" is more along the lines of what a republic is. I have no idea who came up with those two different forms of "democracy" but no one of any credibility actually uses those terms.

I only had a single teacher in my primary education who pointed this out so I guess if people don't read on their own or don't take classes in university that cover these things, they can't even know what form of government they live under.

Jeanette; no, everyone has to manually enrol when they turn 18. I don't know why it isn't done automatically.

Zhukov,

Can you tell us a few names of the political parties where your from? and which ones other then the Socialist party do you think are good to vote for?

YOU'RE, THAN.

Well, where I come from you can either vote for the MFP led by Max Rockatansky (currently in power, although not for too much longer) or the Armalite motorcycle gang – led by the barbaric "Toecutter".

Then there are the minor parties; Labor (not Labour, because they wanted to new and progressive, like the USA, rather than old and traditional, like the UK) Liberal (Like the Republicans) the Democrats, Socialist Alliance (which is a culmination of various bickering parties for the purpose of elections) and the Greens.

Actually, the Democrats might be defunct now, I can't remember.

Anyway, only the Greens are an acceptable alternative to the Socialists.

Because, what is the difference between him and those people so DESPERATE to leave their country, that they will cling on to the underside of lorries to get here? They are so desperate to leave their country, because if they stay there they will be killed. Democracy is actually what, for reasons which I don't understand, is taught in High Schools as being called "direct democracy." No one actually uses that term, though.
