View Full Version : Recommend me a badass movie

Years of being a sensitive new age guy in a country better suited to badasses (the guys here are badass for a reason, 99% of the wildlife can kill you) have left me weak and easy to beat up.

I need a list of the manliest movies known to man, as it were. To prepare me for life in the harsh postapocalyptic future that lies ahead for me in Bartertown, err, I mean Sydney, I will need to have seen significantly badass films to prepare me for what could amount to a future where Tina Turner is Prime Minister after Rudd.

Badass movies I have already seen:

300: Seen it, despite what you might think of me, I liked it.
American Psycho: Cool movie, but Bateman isn't really a role model.
Easy Rider: Seen it, thought my brother should get over this movie.
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly: I remember seeing this film with my brother, Clint Eastwood was the highlight but his doublecrossing mate was also a cool character.
Fight Club: I actually watched this film when I was doing a Society and Culture project on masculinity and cinema perceptions in Australia. The control factor was a Bollywood movie called Devdas. Needless to say, you can guess what the average Australian male prefers as their role model. Even though I disagree with them missing the point of the movie.

Movies I want to see that are manly but don't know if they're out in Australia:

Old Yeller: People tell me this is the only movie it's acceptable for a man to cry at the end of. Well, at least I've been warned.
Audition: Some movie critic on a podcast says this is a film that "every man should watch, but it will destroy you."
Every John Wayne Film Except True Grit (which I've already seen)
Die Hard 1-4. Never seen any of these films.

Any other recommendations?

Sorry, I checked and pretty much I'm certain every movie except Old Yeller is out on DVD here.

I will consult JB.

Seen both of those already. I just think it's strange I was never exposed to the Die Hard films despite one of my friends threatening to tie me to a chair Clockwork Orange style to force me to drink in their awesomeness. With my eyes.

Just about any Clint Eastwood Western
Just about any John Wayne movie

Nice list so far. Let's see...

Most Jean-Claude Van Damme movies. I'd start with Bloodsport.
Most Sylvester Stallone movies. I'd start with Rambo: First Blood Part II.
Most Jackie Chan movies. I'd start with Operation Condor, or Rumble in the Bronx.

Riki Oh: The Story of Ricky. Real men can fix their broken arm with their teeth!
The Fifth Element. There's only one way to handle negotiations.
Over the Top. Truck driving and arm wrestling.
Walking Tall. One man cleans up an entire town, with a 2x4.

There's too many to mention in one post, but that should get you started. :)

I also think you should start with older movies first then move onto newer ones.

Supafly345
Apr 7th, 2010, 12:51 AM
I say start with the pre 70s movies, then skip straight to the 90s and watch 90s to present, then finish off by working backwards through the 80s into the 70s. That should give you a proper incline of badass.

If you like scifi, I've always thought Timecop was pretty badass. Van Damme provides a different level of "badass" than Stallone or Ahnold.

PS - welcome back JOAT.

No shame in Timecop, while you have to suffer through Van Damme, you also get to see Mia Sara

Enter the Dragon. Haven't seen any Bruce Lee listed yet.
Taken. Liam Neeson still kicking ass at 56? Yep.
Dead Heat. Zombies can kick ass too.

The Delta Force. No Chuck Norris yet either? Hmm...
Kickboxer 3. I'm told that Sasha Mitchell is a jerk, but he's good in the movie.
The Dirty Dozen. Classic badass movie.

Now that I've actually read the thread, it becomes apparent that no one has recommended On The Waterfront, Donnie Brasco, Assault on Precinct 13, Miller's Crossing, Do The Right Thing, Scent of A Woman, Full Metal Jacket, Heat, Ronin, From Dusk Till Dawn, Cool Hand Luke, Memento, The Deer Hunter, Mean Streets, Army of Shadows, Tell No One, Get Carter, The Man WHo Would Be King, The Ghost and The Darkness, TimeCrimes, Cross of Iron, True Grit, The Enemy Below, Serpico, The King of Comedy, Casino, Stalker, The Three Burials of Marquis Estrada, Insomnia, Duck You Sucker, THe Day of The Jackal, North by Northwest, Altered States, Scanners, Sorcerer, The Killing Fields, Once Upon A Time In THe West, Night of the Hunter, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Desert Fox, Jacob's Ladder, Wait Until Dark, Treasure of The Sierra Madre, Silverado, Tombstone, The Furies, Duel, Marathon Man, Before the Fall, The Getaway, The (original) Italian Job, The French Connection, The French Connection II, Gone in Sixty Seconds (original), Ripley's Game, Enemy At The Gates, The Iceman Cometh, Force 10 From Navarone, Kelly's Heroes, A Clockwork Orange, Il Divo, Stalag 17, Stir of Echoes, Flatliners, The Professionals, They Call Me Trinity, Trinity is Still My Name, Fallen, Emperor of the North, Hard Times, Ring of Fire, Touch of Evil, Zulu Dawn, The Human Prey, Memed My Hawk, Hudson Hawk, Election, TRIAD Election, Unfaithfully Yours, The Mephisto Waltz, Do The RIght THing, Conquest (LASER BOWS!!! I second Ichi the Killer (http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/ichithekiller.htm).

Audition (http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/odishon.htm) is overrated, I thought.

Don't let anyone spoil the ending for you.

Black Lagoon is also pretty badass, even if it's more than a little bit silly. I wish it'd focus less on Revy, who's basically an invincible, unlikable dickface, and I wish Rock would show more character consistency, he's basically either whiny and pathetic or flaunting his titanium testicles
