View Full Version : How do you get a dog to respect you?

Ok, so we live in a house where you have to pass through an alley to get to the house. The neighbor keeps his dog leashed where it can kinda just lunge at you, but not quite. Ive had some close calls with that dog when i was walking too close to their boundary. Its a smallish-medium sized dog, slim build. No particular breed. Really fierce, thinks its owns the block. When i pass by, it snarls and growls at me angrily. Sometimes lunges at me, but leash prevents it. Neighbor isnt very fond of it as never brings it indoors.
Its not a particularly intimidating dog, but it has an attitude problem. Ive tried giving it food so i can be on its good side. It angrily eats the food and keeps snarling at me once it finishes the food. So much for trying to appeal to its inner gratitude. Thing is I want to know how I can get its respect. Should I offer it more tasty treats or utterly destroying its self esteem with pepper spray or a whack with an umbrella the next time it lunges. What do you guys think x_x

When you offer it food to you overly handle it so to make sure you sent is on it? Its a natural pack mentality that food is distributed by the alpha. By distribute I guess I mean the alpha eats first then his sent is on the food that the others then eat after him.

OH and dont back down. Im guess when you walk by you are just out of his range to get you. Just stand there and look him dead in the eye until he quits. It might take a while at first because he wants to establish his dominance. If you walk away, in his mind, he has won.

you should try getting your neighbor to introduce you to the dog, i've had similar experiences and they've all been successful through that method.

Ask the owner if he will introduce you to the dog and tell it you are ok. He sounds like an asshole so he probably won't. Next time you feed the dog use a firm voice and tell it to sit or stay and don't give it the food until it complies. Hold your hand up, this is what people usually do to teach things to sit. ALWAYS LOOK IN IT'S EYES and never look away. Also every time it barks or lunges yell "NO" in a very commanding voice and never run or fidget or anything. Point at it when you say no and stand there. Say it 2 or three times or until it stops. If you're really manly and bold or it's a dog that is not so dangerous, every time a dog does not respect you and keeps up with bad behavior flip it over on it's back and stare in it's eyes until it looks away. Do this as many times as you need to to establish that you are alpha.
