I'm always curious to hear what people consider to be the greatest horror films ever made, so share with us a list of your top 20 horror films. I'll start it off.

My list is just coming from the top of my head, so I may be omitting some of my true favourites that I just can't think of for whatever reason. Some of them are due to them actually scaring me / impressing me (Los Cronocrímenes Sci-fi/Horror), others just because I can watch them over and over (From Dusk Till Dawn). Having said that, I expect to see a lot of overlap, and maybe some hate.
Evil Dead 2
From Dusk Till Dawn
Halloween
Audition
Cube
Los Cronocrímenes
Trick r' Treat
The Shining
Dead Alive (simply amazing)
Scream
The Thing
Wrong Turn
Dawn Of The Dead (2004)
The Lost Boys
Planet Terror
Shaun Of The Dead
The Descent
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
A Nightmare On Elm Street
The Hills Have Eyes
Throwing it out there: I hate 28 Days Later. I can not stand that movie.
e: I'm also not sure whether I like Cube or Cube Zero more, I just placed Cube because I saw it much more recently. After looking over my list, I think the scariest for me are the ones about mutant hill folk. Just sayin'

Some excellent choices! Nice to see some love for Arachnophobia too. I wasn't a huge fan of that movie when I was younger, but I really grew to love it over the years. That actually reminds me, Warlock should probably be on the list somewhere. Julian Sands is awesome in the first two films.
Also glad to see Audition getting recognition too, as it's one hell of a screwed up movie and I absolutely love it. Can't imagine what it would be like for somebody - who knows nothing about the film in advance - to watch it.
Roger, I just noticed you had Phantasm II in your top.... Please explain this, I am completely befuddled.
I absolutely love the first movie, but I watched the sequel probably a hundred times when I was a kid. It was a bit more comedic, sure, but it was a lot of fun to watch. The first is definitely the scarier of the two films, so it's certainly better in that regard, but I have a stronger sentimental attachment to the sequel.
Keep those lists coming :halloween2 :halloween :halloween2

i loved arachnophobia. having that minor quirk myself any spider based movies chill me down to the bone. Quite possibly the reason i love arachnophobia so much is it's the only movie where John Goodman theoretically saves the world, lol.

The Frighteners! That was a good one. Bubba Ho-tep also deserves credit. House was s classic too, but avoid the sequel as it's TOO goofy. I'm surprised to see The People Under the Stairs on your list though. I remember that film as having forced symbolism and being quite dull. Of course I watched it when I was 10.

Dull? The People Under the Stairs is an awesome movie, totally unique and quite hilarious in parts. Watching Big Ed run around the house in a gimp suit with a shotgun while yelling "BURN IN HELL!" is the exact opposite of dull.

Hatchet is one of those films I heard so many good things about, but upon watching it, I really just didn't like it at all. The humor in particular felt so forced. I know it was promoted as "old school horror", but it didn't feel like that at all. Protoclown tried watching it recently too and had the same reaction.

High 5
During my freshmen year at the high school, they had a halloween/social event for freshmen and the committee involved with the planning chose to show "house" in the auditorium. I laughed my tits off and apparently my laughter was annoying to others so I got kicked out in the middle of the movie.
I've always been a sucker for horror-comedy movies hence the list of my favorite horror flicks contained mostly horror-comedy movies. It's a great combo.

As a huge fan of your site for many years(Since 2000!), I finally decided to get an account, just to get with the times and to lend a hand on this topic. Pretty much my favorites have been covered, except for these 5:
Blood Diner(RoG, you should totally cover this rare gem of a movie! It's hilarious! :D)
Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers (The outhouse killing is excellent!)
Maniac (Crazy movie, but I love it!)
Dead Snow (Nazi Zombies? How can one go wrong? ;D)
The Dead Zone (Favorite Walken movie. Ever.)
Oh, and Arachnophobia, although a comedic movie, still manages to scare the holy hell out of me, since I'm deathly afraid of spiders. That one scene near the end where the queen jumps on the guy's face makes me almost take a #2 EVERY TIME.

I watched Kairo alone, in the dead of January, in a dark and empty house. I think I was also half asleep. That part where all of the ambient sound cuts out and then you hear the voice say "help me" scared the all-encompassing bejesus out of me. I came off the couch backwards and hit a bowl of cereal, so I came back down in a hail of soggy mini-wheats. It was quite the mess.

Tbh, I hate Stephen King cuz there's not a book or film based on his works that I haven't fallen asleep in the middle of, or worse.
