What are your personal top 10 (or 5) games of all time? This would be how you feel about them now, nostalgia and everything included.

For bonus points, include the system you played it on and the year of release.

My top 10:
1. Max Payne 2 (PC, 2003)
2. Marathon 2 (Mac, 1995)
3. Mario 64 (N64, 1996)
4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past (SNES, 1991)
5. Burnout 3: Takedown (Xbox, 2004)
6. Mario Strikers Charged (Wii, 2007)
7. Goldeneye 007 (N64, 1997)

Gauntlet Legends for the N64.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant for the PS2.

Persona 4 for the PS2.

Earthbound or Digital Devil Story on the SNES. They both tickle the same spot in my brain.

Deadly Premonition for the Xbox 360. 2010.

STALKER: Call of Pripyat - PC. 2009? Yeah.

Hitman: Blood Money - PC. 2004, I believe. Maybe '05.

Max Payne 2 - Xbox. 2003, then.

Team Fortress 2, for PC of course. Released in 2007 and looks to last a lot longer.

and Mushihimesama Futari for the Xbox 360.

EDIT - Special Mention. One of the most memorable, but most fucked to play was Robot Alchemic Drive. It felt exactly like controlling a giant robot. I loved it so, even though I was never able to beat it.

Max Payne tapped into the noir center of my mind. It's one of the first few on the list any time someone asks me.

EDIT: Max Payne 2 specifically because it was just as good from a story standpoint as the first, at least for me, but, being that it came out later, it's inner workings are a lot better.

In no particular order:

Castlevania 2
Symphony of the Night

Dynasty Warriors, generally would say 3, but 7 is quickly taking its place.
Warcraft 2
Guilty Gear XX
Mirror's Edge
Mega Man 3
Super Mario RPG
Mechwarrior 2

Top 10, Uuuuh, Jesus. In no order:

1. Trog!- 1991, NES
I think out of every single NES game to have multiplayer, my friends and I spent the longest on that one by far, not even Bubble Bobble came close

2. Fire n' Ice- 1993 NES
I couldn't actually let this one go, even though I sold my NES lol. I remember we'd all sit around in a group and try to figure it out together for fucking hours. Only puzzle game I really liked.

3. Some sword-fighting game where you play a guy progressing through a stage and fight various enemies one-on-one- NES

I wish I could remember the name of it so I could play it on emulator, I was a god at that shit

4. Afterburner II- Arcade
fuck the descriptions, man w/e

5. Ocean Hunter- Arcade

6. X Wing versus Tie Fighter- PC 1997

7. Maken X- Dreamcast, 1999
Because it was fucking awesome, Jesus Christ I loved this game so much it temporarily made me jealous that my friend owned a Dreamcast

8. Vampire Night- PS2 version, 2001

9. Thief: Deadly Shadows- Xbox, 2004

10. Gladius, PS2 2003

Special mention goes to every Ace Combat ever made, Hexen, Shadow Warrior, Blood, Duke Nukem 3d, Timesplitters games, that first Pokemon, Brothers In Arms, Left 4 Dead, Burnout 3 and Paradise, Dynasty Warriors, Onimusha Warlords, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy/Legends, Rampart, and Sinistar

Deus Ex (PC)

This game really creates the illusion that every choice has a consequence. And I liked hacking every computer I could find, so I could read personal emails. Love it and can't wait for the high definition texture project to complete. ( http://www.offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/ )

Red Dead Redemption (XBOX360)

It's a game I always dreamed about. I love everything about it, excluding a few missions (namely in Mexico) that are pretty damn stupid.

Fallout 2 (PC)

It dominated my world for a long time and i've spent hundreds of hours playing this. Buggy as shit, but even that didn't bother me.

UFO: Enemy Unknown (or X-COM 1, whatever) (PC)

This game has everything. EVERYTHING. Propably my all time favorite game if I was forced to choose just one.

Silent Hill 2 (PS2)

Yeah, yeah. i'm a fanboy, shut the hell up. The plot is very moving and complex (for a videogame), the soundtrack kicks ass and I love all the characters to death. Also, it's the second creepiest game in the series. The first one was creepier, but the plot was too silly.

Fallout: New Vegas (PC)

With a few mods, it's pretty much a perfect game. Still waiting for the DLC's so I can start it all over again. Also, there are a few mods that are pretty much essential for an awesome game experience. Why anyone would play this on a console is beyond me.

Mega Man 2 (NES)

The only Mega Man besides MM3 I managed to beat. :( This one takes the cake because of the most awesome NES music ever made and the pacing was just right. Not too long and not too short. The easiest MM game by far, but i'm one those losers who doesn't like to be too frustrated with the game difficulty.

Zombies Ate My Neighbours (SNES)

The second most fun co-op experience i've had. Everything about this game was too awesome for words. Full of thrills and chills.

Saints Row 2 (PC)

The most fun co-op experience i've ever had. The game engine bends to all kinds of crazy experiments. Tons of stuff to do and laugh out loud stupid characters / plot. Waiting eagerly for SR3.

Resident Evil 4 (GameCube)

The game looked so cool I bought GC, even though there was no other game that interested me in that system (well, maybe Eternal Darkness and Twin Snakes). Awesome and original level design, creepy enemies and most of all, extremely satisfying shooting with cool customizable weapons. Easily the best Resident Evil. Those who say otherwise are wrong.

3. Super Mario Bros. 2 - NES, 1988

9. The Simpsons Arcade Game - Arcade version (4-player), 1991
10. Warlords - Arcade version (4-player), 1980
11. Revenge of Shinobi - Sega Genesis, 1989

Other notable games that quickly come to mind are: King's Quest V (PC), Astrosmash, Snafu, Night Stalker (Intellivision), Bushido Blade (Sony Playstation), Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest (NES), Golden Axe (Sega Genesis), Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (PS3), Diablo 2 & Starcraft (PC), Viewpoint (Neo Geo), Todd's Adventures in Slime World (Atari Lynx).

You're supposed to get your ass kicked the first level, the goal is to escape the fight while all the other generals buy you time

If you use the level select code you can back track and build up your generals though so the game gets actually managable

In addition to the fights, I liked just exploring the world, taking in the environments, and finding the little secrets that were hidden everywhere (the turtles, the bunkers, the secret beach, the garden on top of the temple, etc).

It was probably really fucking boring to normal people but I loved every second of the overworld. It was massive without feeling monotonous, like, say, Oblivion tended to. Not to mention fucking cool.

I have literally hundreds of wrestling vidjamagame stories with my friends. We went nuts with create-a-wrestler (but then again so did everyone it seems) Some of my faves include:

-When 2k first came out the first thing we did was make create a clones of ourselves and then named one of the group the 'video wrestling commissioner'. He declared that myself and another friend would be tag team champs if we could beat the Acolytes in a match. So we put the game on hard (based on the fact that we obliterated hard mode on WCW/NWO revenge) and started fighting. Now I should tell you if you don't already know this, but hard mode on WCW/NWO is easier than easy mode on WM2K. The fight went awry for us very quickly, and Farooq gets his special, well as a man who appreciates heels and all they do, I grab a guitar and rush in the ring to blast Farooq with it, only he ducks, I clock my friend, get hit with the Dominator, and that was that. It was a perfect end to the match though.

-I forget the name of it but there was a wrestling game for the Gamecube that featured Hell in the Cell. Not too long after we got it we decided to have a tag team tornado Hell in the Cell. Knowing the caged ceiling can break while up there, we all proceeded to climb the cage as soon as the match starts. We are fighting, and I get my special, which at the time was the rolling German suplex. I use it, and as I am rolling my opponent around, the last suplex hits right where both my partner and opponent's partner are fighting. The cage then collapses, everyone but me falls through the ring, and there's nothing left for me to do but pose.

-We had an acquaintance (won't call him friend, he was creepy and it turns out he is 'allegedly' a pedophile) who used to make the stupidest create-a-wrestlers. He made a guy with long arms that he was all excited about. When he left we edited the shit out of it, turned it green, gave it googly eyes, and named him Ganglio. Then we made a clone of him, made him brown, and called him Danglio and named them the shitty tag team champs.

-More create-a-wrestler hijinx included Jesus Christ who did the razors edge as a finisher. Fro 'Nuff, a Sho 'Nuff clone with a big afro. Mmmmm Budda, a fat guy named after a fat friend who could not spell Buddha correctly. A laundry list of inside joke create-a-wrestlers that I won't go into, and so on.

was Heroes 5 like heroes 3 but in 3d?

Just a more graphic-y version with a couple expansions (orcs and dwarves)

No kidding on that.
I feel bad because we told this one guy that Original H was Triple H's grandfather and so he always played as him.

We convinced a friend that HHH stood for Hungry Hungry Hippos. We would tell him "Why do you think he always says 'I am the game'."

I've played a loooot of wrestling games over the years, but none of them are really good enough for a top 10 for me. I mostly play them with Schimid, and we make tons of create-a-wrestlers too, but when we go online we usually play as Vince McMahon and then yell at people in his voice the entire match.

The newer Smackdown VS Raw games let you make your own finishers. We gave Vince two. One where he hoists someone up on his shoulders and then repositions them about 10 times; flipping them up and around and on their side, then the back, then stomach, then side again, etc.; then eventually just puts them back down on their feet and punches them. In the other finisher, he repeatedly kicks the other guy in the balls with alternating feet like he's doing a russian dance, then quickly spits green mist in their face, then resumes the ball kicking. All of the ball kicks are done at max slowness, so the entire finisher takes about 30 seconds to finish. We once won a tornado tag online with it by keeping one guy busy while our partner went for the pin.

That's the magic of wrestling games, they are really only fun when you play them with a group of friends. Not much value playing them one player at all. Even the story modes on them are just slightly interesting and very forgettable

Chojin
Jul 14th, 2011, 06:51 AM
There was one SDVR game where the entire story mode was voiced by whatever character you picked, you could pick from the entire male roster, and the stories were stupider than usual.

We were playing as Orton and some chick manager cast a spell on him that turned him into a woman the next day. He wasn't even upset about it, and when some other guy was trying to make fun of him, Orton said "well at first I was upset, but look at me; I'm a perfect 10!". In his real voice. Orton sounded so bored and weird during all the deliveries too; it was hilarious.

I have literally hundreds of wrestling vidjamagame stories with my friends. We went nuts with create-a-wrestler (but then again so did everyone it seems) Some of my faves include:

We convinced a friend that HHH stood for Hungry Hungry Hippos. We would tell him "Why do you think he always says 'I am the game'."

I made my guy come out with the Mick Foley entrance where he raises his arm up in the air but with the gangrel music so he would come out of the floor with the fire. Those two together glitch kinda bad so after exiting the fire he just kinda walks back to behind the curtain, spins around then comes back out. It looks terrible but hilarious.

Hungry hungry hippos

wrestling stories

The day after 9/11 a few friends and I made "The Twin Towers" tag team of Mr. USA and Union Jack, both layered in flag pants/shirts/masks/etc. of their respective countries. For weeks we pitted them against Osama Bin Laden, who we put in white karate pants and gave him an afro "turban" which we made white because we were so clever and patriotic. He came out to the ring with Kane's intro and carried a briefcase "bomb". We would take turns wailing on him in 2 on 1 matches till we got bored of beating him bloody, which surprisingly took some time.

DOIN IT FOR AMERICA!

We also tore up No Mercy which was a blast as well but 2000 will always hold a dear place in my withered heart.

its too difficult to put them in order, so this is just a rundown i guess off the top of my head

1) Mother 3 (GBA)
2) Banjo-Kazooie (N64)
3) Yoshi's Island (SNES)
4) SSX 3 (PS2)
5) Bioshock (PC)
6) Fallout (PC)
7) Mario Strikers Charged (Wii)
8) Frequency (PS2)
9) Rocket Knight Adventures (GEN)
10) Silent Hill 2-4 (PS2) [can't pick between these three, like them all for different reasons]

it's weird, even though i'm a professional smash brothers brawl player, i wouldn't put it on my list of favorite games of all time. i've spent a lot of time playing it but it doesn't do as much for me as the games above, even if i do associate it with a time of great personal freedom and traveling all around the country

My roommate last year was the #1 Brawl player in the state and we made fun of him mercilessly. The best was when we were talking to a stranger and we came across the topic of Smash Bros. We mentioned said roommate's name and the dude's eyes opened wide and yelled "BASSEM!? YOU KNOW BASSEM!? OH MY GOD!" We completely lost our shit laughing.

I'd love to be good enough and competitive enough to do something like that. Fightin' games seem to be where it's at, though, and the only shooters people play like that that are also big enough are Halo and Call of Duty.

I do SHMUPs and stuff, though - I'm pretty high up on the online leaderboards for some of the Cave shootahs.

i get that feeling from the way he posts, he's constantly campaigning to be considered the 2nd best wario in the country on smashboards, seems like a pest

tbh i never really liked competitive gaming. i've always been good at games but it was all natural and i never really cared to get "into" a game. smash was one of those games i was naturally adept at, and it didn't take much to switch from hometown hero to national threat just because i made smart decisions and had good instincts

the only other game i've ever really delved into was mario strikers charged which is also on my list, chojin and i were i think the best team online at a point, and i was really good in singles too

River City Ransom (My favorite nes game as a kid. I couldn't find any other kids who knew what it was, but by the time I invited them over to my house for a play, it became their favorite too)
Super Dodge Ball (My go-to fighting game as a youngster)
Final Fantasy VI (FFIII in USA, really just a tremendous rpg that hasn't been matched)
Albert Odyssey Legend of Aldean (favorite JRPG from Sega Saturn days)
Guardian Heroes (played the hell out of this one on Sega Saturn also, getting all the endings and characters)
Lost Odyssey (Best JRPG this generation in my opinion and some mini stories still stick out in my memory)
Tales of Vesperia (Second best JRPG, probably because I played with my 2 roommates co-op and it was a blast)
Gears of War (the series as a whole, no other game series that I can remember has such a huge spectacles and grand set pieces)
Earth Defense Force 2017 (because I can play this game with a buddy and lose track of time for hours)
Borderlands (the only game from this generation that I've played through the co-op and beaten 7 times)

Almost on here:
Timesplitters Future Perfect (I love timesplitters and creating maps to fight friends on. Also the challenge maps were excellent)

Oh god

1) Earthbound - Always tops my list. I guess I'm one of those gigantic homosexuals whose life was profoundly impacted by this game about a slightly chunky kid with psychic powers who hits shit with a bat. It's basically my life.

2) Valkyrie Profile - One of the most well-constructed, well-balanced, challenging games I've played with a genuinely good story. I recently beat it again on hard mode.

3) Deadly Premonition - Rated the most accurate Twin Peaks simulator of 2010.

4) Super Fantasy Zone - It's basically Defender on LSD. That makes it awesome. Beat this one on Hard mode too. I loved it enough to import a complete copy from Europe because it didn't come out here. :l

5) Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - A balls-to-the-wall crushingly difficult RPG about punching Lucifer in the nuts.

6) Ys: The Oath in Felghana - One of the best action games ever in one of the best action game series ever. A remake of the mediocre Ys 3 turned it into one of the best games ever.

7) Tengen Tetris - A much superior release and the only version of Tetris I know of that has co-op play.

8) NiER - Somehow, through some sort of devil magic, the joke ending of a shitty game gave rise to one of the best releases of last year and one of the best games I've ever played. Absolutely play this game.

I am glad I played it on normal first, because it gave me enough of an edge to make Hard mode very manageable. I only had two game overs (both against Lezard, actually; once in his tower and once in the Seraphic Gate) and both times it was due to me being stupid and taking a risk.

Not as bad as all that, it just means

The first play through you have to sacrifice souls to make a fighter powerful enough to get through the game the first time because the enemies are just too powerful. Sacrificing souls though makes your final boss Valkyrie. Once you beat the "C ending" boss then start a new game with all the gear from your first run through and can now win fights without sacrificing souls, which makes you fight the real final boss

So think of it as a double length game, kind of more like how Castlevanis SotN springs a double length game on you.

10,000 Volt Ghost
Oct 3rd, 2011, 11:05 AM
SOTN was like having a whole sequel to play through with the inverted castle. Ghouls & Ghosts makes you literally play the entire game over to beat the real end boss. I'm sure VP is a ton better though.
