This is how the new generation protests? By sitting on your ass? Thats one hell of an accomplishment.

How about next time, instead of voting for a po9litician you don't like, you just stay home? That will show them.

Read the rest of the content on the site, especially the whole introductory section and the section on extending 'Buy Nothing Day' for the whole year.

What about buying the Adbusters merchandise? Clearly, that doesn't count, does it?

Actually, Ghandi was quite active.

But I digress. These people are very active with acts of vandalism and a few cases of reckless endangerment (am I the only one who sees the problem with dropping $10k off a building?).

And the ad with the beaten child in the vodka bottle, so very tasteful and non-exploitive.

Buy Nothing Day was a huge failure. Didn't Wal-Mart post it's best ever single day sales figure on it last year?

There’s no right way to celebrate Buy Nothing Day. The idea is to do *something* to spark up debate, not shut it down.

The associated circus of silliness that's often seen on this day aside, I think this is the real point of the day.

How does this promote consumer awareness?

I don't see this as getting nearly as popular "No Fly Day". :SEP11

How does this promote consumer awareness?

We can't escape the fact that we are all consumers. We need to eat, we need to have shelter, we need to have energy to power our homes.

The question, though, is not whether we have the right to consume, but whether we have the right to consume more than we really need to. Governments encourage the public to go out and buy 'stuff' to maintain a high GDP. Corporations are bombarding us with ads 24/7, co-opting public space with their billboards and giant megastores. We're constantly goaded to consume, and never encouraged to reflect on the impact of our collective over-consumption on our local and global environments.

The ostensible purpose of Buy Nothing Day - to abstain from purchasing goods - seems silly. Any body can do that on any day. That's not the point. The fact that there are groups of people, large and small, that are voluntarily opting out of the established buyer-seller dynamic for one day will, hopefully, prompt people to look into the reasons of why there is a Buy Nothing Day and debate said reasons amongst themselves.

Why dont I just start a "Don't shit Day", where we don't take a shit for a day and then people sit around and wonder why we have one to begin with?

As much sense as Adbusters makes on some issues, I think it's actually a bunch of companies working together to sell to the oblivious capitalism-hating crowd. :(

Really? You think it might be sponsored by Adidas, Burger King, Captain Morgan, Old Spice, etc etc?

Would you have to refrain from speaking on "Don't Shit Day" as well, Vince?

As long as you don't post any more pictures of yourself on the internet to solidify that "I'm 20+ years old and I still live in my parents' basement" aura you have goin' on, Proto.

Say, that 'parent's basement' joke was a laugh riot! You should have a web site of your own for pointed social commentary like that. You could have daily rants, a message board and evn get other great writers who reognize your talent to post there. If that didn't draw traffic, you could even post some porn.

Can you provide a verbal riposte that isn't a variation on 'Well, you suck'? Your mental movements are more predictable than the bowel movements of a senior citizen filled with prune juice.

Why waste time making or thinking of some kind of witty response when the truth works just fine.

So why did you quit your web site?

Why waste time...thinking...

I see you take this credo to heart.

Oh and by the way...

Yet again, never attacking the points, just attacking the person.

Would you like some fries with that crow?
