Can a president pardon himself for his crimes? And if he could, would that have saved Nixon (in theory, because gave up his seat once Watergate was exposed)?

I don't know that they could do that once impeachment has been levied. But I dunno.....

I think that Ford pardoned Nixon when he took office ... more research is required, though.

Ford did pardoned Nixon, and many didn't forgave him for doing so, and then later lost the election to Carter.

Well, in order to be pardoned, you need to be convicted of a crime. Its kind of hard for a sitting president to be convicted. Thats what impeachment is for.

Not necessarily. If they don't garner enough votes to impeach, the Department of Justice can still intercede and file criminal charges on the president.

You can't pardon yourself without being kicked out for abusing your powers on the basis of pure gayness. That's like saying you can fly by lifting up the chair you're sitting on. :(
