We had a lot of deaths this past year. Well, let me rephrase that: We have a lot of famous people who a lot of people know die. John Ritter, Johnny Cash, that kid from Seaquest, Mister Rogers, Mr. Perfect, and like... others?

But yeah, I figure 2004 will be an even BIGGER year for celebrity deaths, so I figured we could just have a nice centralized thread for them all. It's officially 2004 at some places, and people could very well die in these places. So why wait for us Americans to start ringing in the new year, before we start checking those obituaries?

And this DOES belong in GB, because celebrities could be authors, musicians, actors, etc. It could be in the News forum, but that's a whole other board in itself.

I'll get the ball rolling. It's not exactly a 2004 death, but according to Netscape's news thingy, it was put up on January 1st.

Actor Earl Hindman, best known for playing a neighbor whose face was forever obscured by a fence on the television show "Home Improvement," died of lung cancer Monday. He was 61.

As Wilson, the neighbor of Tim Allen's character on the long-running sitcom, Hindman dispensed folksy advice from behind a white picket fence, with only his eyes and forehead visible to audiences.

"Earl had a very deep voice. It was very rich, very warm and very recognizable," his wife, the Rev. Molly McGreevy of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Stamford, told The Advocate of Stamford. "He was the funniest human being I ever met. Even after 27 years of marriage, he could always crack me up."

Despite his fame, Hindman remained a modest man who enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, listening to country music and playing poker with his friends.

"He was not impressed with himself - not in the least," McGreevy said. "He was a person who was never changed by success."

Before appearing on the show, he played Detective Lt. Bob Reid for 16 years on the daytime drama "Ryan's Hope."

"He was the kind of actor you depended on," said Helen Gallagher, one of his Ryan's Hope co-stars. "He was very steady and very talented actor and such a down-to-earth human being."

He made his name in New York theater, appearing in "Dark of the Moon" off-Broadway in 1970 and in "The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel" at the Public Theater in 1971. He also acted in two short-lived Broadway plays and in several movies, including "The Ballad of the Sad Cafe" (1991) and "Final" (2001).

He was born in Bisbee, Ariz. and studied acting at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

I watched the Raw clip show last week, and they had a compilation for all the wrestling folk who passed away. And just seeing Crash with that little smirk and carrying around the scale made me smile in that proud-yet-sad way. :(

QUECHEE, Vt. - Bob Keeshan, known to generations of children as TV personality Captain Kangaroo, has died at 76. Keeshan died of a long illness, his family said in a statement.

Keeshan’s “Captain Kangaroo” debuted on CBS television in 1955 and ran for 30 years before moving to public television for six more. The program was wildly popular among children and won six Emmy Awards, three Gabriels and three Peabody Awards.

The format was simple: Each day, Captain Kangaroo, with his sugar-bowl haircut and uniform coat, would wander through his Treasure House, chatting with his good friend Mr. Green Jeans, played by Hugh “Lumpy” Brannum.

He would visit with puppet animals, like Bunny Rabbit, who was scolded for eating too many carrots, and Mr. Moose, who loved to tell knock-knock jokes. A favorite sketch involved Mister Moose dropping ping-pong balls on the Captain's head.

But the show revolved about the grandfatherly Captain Kangaroo, whose name was inspired by the kangaroo pouch-like pockets of the coat Keeshan wore.

“I was impressed with the potential positive relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, so I chose an elderly character,” Keeshan said.

Before portraying the Captain, Keeshan was the first actor to play sidekick Clarabell the Clown on the "Howdy Doody Show."

Keeshan was the author of numerous books, including "Growing Up Happy: Captain Kangaroo Tells Yesterday's Children How To Nurture Their Own" and "Good Morning Captain: 50 Wonderful Years With Bob Keeshan: TV's Captain Kangaroo." He also wrote a series of books about a character called "Itty Bitty Kitty."
