I'm not going to go Helm and try to get all technical, so just remember that BM has raspy vocals whereas Death has mid-level or deep vocals. Death is also a lot thicker sounding. BM is infamous for its KVLT bands having crappy recording quality on their albums. BM also makes a point to say naughty things about god. A lot.
Big Papa Goat
Jan 13th, 2004, 01:11 AM
Theres just as many death metal bands that talk bad about god as there are black metal bands.
Ninjavenom

Doesn't matter. It's one of the main pillars of BM.

CastroMotorOil
Jan 16th, 2004, 03:34 AM
Death Metal generally will have deep raspy vocals, subject manner of the songs ranges from ahte of god to simply describing blood and gore. The guitars are fast but thicker and deeper sounding then black metal. (for a horrid comparison, Slipknot guitar tone compared to like green day guitar tone)
Black Metal generally has vocals that are like shrieking and the subject matter is almost ALWAYS about hatred of all things holy. Guitars are normally fast as well but a little higher pitched then death metal. (higher strings, no downtuning etc)
Of course there are 10000000 exceptions to those rules.
For a good illustraton of them, download some cannibal corpse and some Dark Throne, and the differnece will be easy to see.

They are good, but they Death metal should go in black metals place, and Black metal should go in death metals place.
Mr. Fugo
Jan 16th, 2004, 04:12 PM
Yes, but the "subject manner" description of Death metal is ok as it is, otherwise, I might agree.
At least the black metal I listen to commonly speaks of christ-loathing, whilst the death metal is a mix-up of antichristian themes and plain description of gore and slaughter.
liquidstatik

CHRISTIAN METAL! ;D
Mr. Fugo
Jan 16th, 2004, 06:19 PM
HEHE! That sucks!
There's this Norwegian Christian television show, and it had this Christian-matal guy on, to show how "cool" christianity could be, and he wore all black and all, and bragged along of his affinity for "dark", "heavy" music. hehe. I laughed.
And that same time they had this Satanist guy as a guest, and the topic was "Satan". The topic appeared next to the logo saying "styrk" (Strengthen/support), and when saying "Styrk Satan", the Christians wheren't slow to grip their cellphones and colmplain as hell.
Christian TV is funny.
Big Papa Goat
Jan 17th, 2004, 03:08 AM
A lot of black metal is about paganism and fantasy rather than blasphemy. Look at Emperor, a lot of Dark Throne, Burzum, Immortal, In the Woods, a lot of the Norwegian scene.
Death metal seems to me to be mostly about a hatred of morality and holiness, whether it be mocking respect for human life with gory images and murder fantasies, or more straightforward Deicide-like blasphemetal.
Just my opinions on the matter. :posh

This thread is hilarious. Anyhoo...
Death metal, think of low-pitched guitars played very fast, with deep roars for vocals. Heavy on the drums too, often a lot of double bass action. More extreme than thrash metal (early Metallica) but doesn't get quite as chaotic as grindcore (early Napalm Death). Still can be pretty all over the place. There has been an increasing emphasis on technical originality more recently. So the songs are not as simplistic as hardcore (although hardcore has gone the technical route too). There's also a branch of it that melds Iron Maiden style melodic heavy metal with death metal - it's been called the "Swedish style" or melodic death metal. Lyrics tend to be about, you know, death, gore, Satan, etc. Representative bands: Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Obituary, Entombed, In Flames, At the Gates...
Blackmetal, on the other hand, has a higher "sound" for its guitars and higher pitched vocals that are screeched. Less about gore and more about Satan, and some pagan elements thrown in there for good times. Definitely more "goth" looking than death metal musicians, who look more, I dunno, grungy. There's a side to it that prides itself on being TROO and KVLT metal, and has shit production values. There's also a punk music feel to TROO black metal. The other side is more melodic, using pseudoclassical keyboards and that sort of thing. Overall, there's an emphasis on "atmosphere" that's more pronounced for blackmetal than death metal. Guitars are usually played fast. Drumming can be pretty nuts too. Representative bands: Emperor, Mayhem, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Darkthrone.
Hope that helps!

Different sounds for similar genres, Hickman. Metal's got tons and tons of variety. There is indeed a limit to the amount of genres a style can contain before it becomes ludicrous, but Goth, Black, and Death are all valid and different types of metal. Same as Pop Punk is to punk rock.

Helm

Too late for me to be on topic but nevertheless... clasp did a decent job of explaining.
Death metal was basically thrash metal taken it it's extreme, at first. Possessed, Death, Onslaught were the first few proto-death metal bands to strive for this new sound. The progression from thrash to death metal can be easily heard in Slayer's Reign in Blood. Whereas Thrash was usually minor in fine rock tradition, death metal sought to achieve a much more chaotic sound by composing in chromatic or atonal scemes. The focus was on driving rhythmic brutality. Then came Suffocation and gave birth to technical death metal which is basically more of the same just with the difference of intent, obviously. The sound doesn't change much from generic brutal death metal, it's the technical precision that changes. Blastbeats everywhere, twisting guitar riffs, odd tempos and complex structures. And dudes that growled. The form of the music rather than the content of it has always been death metal's focus. It's also considered sort of a semi-sport, a test of endurance among musicians, to play such music because it's so demanding.
Black metal spawned from the disgust of some teenagers towards the fact that death metal became semi-trendy at some point in the early nineties. They claimed that for a genre called death metal, it sure wasn't about death enough. So they started playing sloppily, dischordantly and in a dronish fashion about hate and death and occasionally jesus getting fucked up the ass. The content was the focus, in contrast to death metal. And the intent was usually nihilistic but romantic. A sort of juvenile 'I hate everything' mentality put to music. Tremolo picking and an underplayed blastbeat usually were employed.
If you've heard Death and Suffocation, you've heard all you need to hear of death metal just so you can make the distinction... and I suppose Mayhem and Darkthrone epitomize the black metal sound.
