Oh Captain! My Captain!
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up--for you the flag is flung--for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths--for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
Walt Whitman (1819-1892)
While originally intended for President Lincoln, I think this is a fitting tribute to this captain too. Besides, I've alway liked this poem and it's reverent, humbled and despairing quality.

Am I the only one that was devistated by Captain Kangaroo's death?
First Mr. Rogers, now him, my first two learning-based show icons are now gone. It was always fun watching the hilarious antics of our Afrcan-American friend Bill Cosby make a spectical of himself in order to explain cultures around the world on that show.

I'd be devistated, but in all honesty, before this thread, i thought Captain Kangaroo was actually a Kangaroo. :(

I would have been devastated, if there hadn't been two threads about it, when people SHOULD be using the Celebrity Deaths thread.
Besides, I thought he died like 5 years ago. :/

no, man...that's why I started the thread. The Captain is one of my earliest childhood memories....I, too, am devistated

You dumbass, go back to your Barney. Your childhood friends was a ugly person in a purple dinosour suit.
Us older people know who Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Rogers, and Mr. Wizard are. And they shall be all sadly missed.

I heard they filled the coffin with ping-pong balls.

:lol That would have been fitting. Mr. Moose delivered the eulogy and Bunny Rabbit threw a wake.

He wore a jacket with really large pockets on the front..thus the "Kangaroo". It was a really great kids show. It probably went off the air 20-25 years ago. It came on every week day morning on CBS.

:( .... did he give little kids a ride around with that thing? I regret not watching these cute little shows when i was a baby. I was too fucking busy drawing purple shaded suns and stick figures with cigarettes in their legs because i HAD to.

not that I remember. Mr Moose and Bunny Rabbit would play pranks on the captain and ping pong balls would fall on his head. He would show cartoons and read stories for the little ones. He came across as a kind and caring grandfatherly figure.
