What defines "you"?
The One and Only...

Competition, hatred, theory, abstractions, and radical doubt.

And being a hosebag. Don't forget that.

Ok, not quite what I was trying to get at. What makes an individual the person he or she is? Bodily shape? DNA? Soul? etc.

Oh. I thought you meant OAO speciffically. Which is where the whole hosebag came in.

First, prove that there is a "you". Then you might have a case.

I'm asking you to do it, bitch.
The One and Only...

"I" is an illusion. There is no "I." In fact, there is not anything. There are not even perceptions. It's all based on arcane preconceptions that cannot logically be proven, such as A=A. Because of the nature of words and definitions, they are never directly applied to the concrete world; rather, they are tied to abstractions in which axioms have become tautology.
Well, theoretically anyhow. Maybe there is an "I"...

*shrug*
I'm not necessarily talking about a Cartesian "I" or ego.
So you deny the correspondence theory of truth? So much for your economics.
Regardless, people still conceive of themselves as having an identity.
The One and Only...

I accept certain things for practical reasons. I just don't feel that I can say I am absolutely, 100% certain of their truth.

Jan 23rd, 2004, 08:36 PM
Fine. Practically speaking, what do you have to say about personal identity.

I'm a homo sapien with blonde hair and blue eyes; about 5'8" tall and 170 lbs. And my name's Brandon.
Seriously, I don't really believe in a unified "self," at least not in the sense that it's something inside of me. It's basically a collection of learned behaviors, instincts, other biological determinants, and unconscious and conscious thought processes.

Because they stand for everything they used to hate. In another era, Paris was the center of the Enlightenment. Now it's the center for the expansion of European socialism.

I am a lump of carbon whose shape and attitude has been deterministicaly shaped by outside forces and causes and, as such, have never had a will of my own and have never really been an "I"... apparently. :(

If there is no, "I" then how is there a concept of, "I". How come everytime I say I, you correlate with, "Kahl"(or moron, or whatever it may be, you can still make that distinction). Even if from a blinded perceptional view, my voice still echoes from the corner by the television.
"I" may be an illusion, but for some reason plenty of people seem to subscribe to that illusion. That gives it a reality, even only if based in the insanity of unified thought.
THere is also the issue of personal responsibility. You know what you have done, and have not done(and what you should do). Just like those around you do, regardless of if what you have done and have not done were just illusions created that morning when you woke up, like in Dark City. All people still make the associations...
In effect, it doesn't really matter if there is an "I" or not, because you will still be held liable for you, and here on this wavelength of reality there is a very real illusion of you and I.
And of course, outside of all that, there is no I, but outside of that is somewhere we cannot see-- at this moment.

"I" is everything that is not "them".
