I'm thinking about making a site dedicated to video game manuals. Some of them have awesome art in them, and i like looking at all of 'em. I'm also scanning system pack-in booklets, inserts, ads, etc. I'm sure there are folks out there like me looking for more crap to pollute their PC with. But i'm not sure if people other than me will really use it. I have a lot of manuals here, but i'm wondering if it will really be worth all the work scanning 'em. Anyone got any input/suggestions?

Get other people to scan their manuals for you. Less work and more content.

It would be a more useful service to people if you turned the manuals into PDF files after you scanned them. :(

Not always, a lot of people can't even load PDF's (sad but true). Hell, I can load PDF's and I'd still rather have graphics.

All SimGame manuals have 50 pages or so.

And for some reason I find them fun to read. :(

If people can't read PDF's, what makes you think their computer/connection is good enough to download 50 images, each up to 1MB in size?

What shitty-assed image optimization program are you using that makes an image 1MB? :eek

I considered zipping them to save filespace. I don't mind downloading zips and rars as long as there is something i want in them. Kinda like a ROM site, but with neat little pictures inside. If i spend a few bucks i can acquire more on ebay. Some guy has put like a zillion manuals on one disc and is selling them, but i don't have fifteen bucks, and the content wouldn't be original . I didn't plan on doing all of them myself, I'm not nuts. I was hoping some kind folks might be able to scrounge up some on the web or scan them and send 'em to me. :o

If you want a decent full-colour copy, you have to go 1:1 rather than shrink the image or compress the quality. There's a really good chance that anyone who wants a game manual is going to print it out, too, especially since most of them are only about a dozen pages. I've experienced the horrors of printing small text at 75dpi. :(

Enter the PDF. >:

If they were PDF's nobody would use them or care. With something like this who wants to launch that external Acrobat crap? Personally I find PDF's annoying and only use them when there are no other options. I think it'll be a viable standard the day it becomes part of the browser; until then it's just an irritation.

It launches in two seconds, homo. >:

But nooooo, you'd all rather download the ZIP file, then unzip the ZIP file, and then search through dozens of image files, clicking on each one until you find the right page. >:

Actually I would. Then I have a nice collection of standard files I can do what I want with. PDF is annoying. Just like you.

I don't know about what you guys are using, but my Mozilla version supports PDFs with a simple plug-in.

If everyone would hurry up and design everything for Mozilla we wouldn't have to deal with all the whiners having problems with IE anymore. >:

I use Opera. Does that mean if I made a website I'd design it specifically for it? Or a game I'd develop it solely for Macs? That would be silly. Convince every other webmaster to design their sites specifically for fringe browsers and you'll have a point. Until then no.

That's what I meant...everyone.
