Ray Davies is the best vocalist, because he always sounds like he's trashed, but in a good way :)

others?

Kevin Moore, he has a hollow, weary kind of voice that I like

I don't even know who that is. I'm just arguing to argue.

I think 90% of vocalists fall into the "good" category and very few actually stand out above that. I don't think most of the music I listen to puts a lot of emphasis on good vocalists. That's what opera is for.

Heavy metal top five:

Dio, Dinkison, Halford (old halford, for christs sake), Geoff Tate, John Arch

Alex Chilton: Listen to the Box Top's "The Letter" and then Big Star's "September Gurls."

Brian Wilson: and the rest of the Boys. "Sloop John B" proves it.

Neil Young: Conveys the best emotions. Raw and great.

The Beatles: they all kick ass.

Black Francis

Thom Yorke

Jeff Tweedy

Liz Phair (early)

Robery Plant

John Bell - WSP. he has one of the most original and distinct voices in music today.

The Blind Owl from Canned Heat - Cool nasal whelp in songs like "Going up to Country" and "On the Road again"(not Willy version)

Mama Cass

Buddy Guy

Lou Reed - He can carry a tune quite well, just not convetionally. He really does suck now, though. :(

Mark Mulcahy - perhaps the best vocalist of all time, pure beauty. Hear his voice and be saved.

I agree with most of Royal's, and I agree on Lou Reed. Others...

1. Jeff Mangum
2. Elliott Smith
3. David Bowie
4. Rod Stewart (FUCK YOU ALL!!!)

EDIT: Fuck, fuck.....Van Morrison, particularly the "Astral Weeks" shit.

Probably Maynard from Tool/APC or Mike Patton for singing, and Jacob Bannon from Converge and Barney Greenwood from Napalm Death for screaming.

MJK is one of my faves as well. He has an aesthetically pleasing voice. There's nothing wrong with liking him but some fuckwads, who only recently learned the art of name checking Steve Albini to beg musical credibility, want you to think otherwise.

Other Faves: Nick Drake, Thom Yorke, Ian Curtis, Jarboe. That's all I can think of for now.[/quote]

Thom as in Yorke or Waits?

I like radiohead, but Thom Yorke sounds like a mental patient trying to sound sympathetic. Also I think he is a real asshole. But I like his music.

Edit: Although she isn't the best, I'm a little suprised Nico wasn't mentioned anywhere

Neither of you are funny, stay on topic you babies.

I agree with Bowie, Young, and Morrison. I would also say Dylan, simply because it's so diffrent from all the others, unlike those people who try to sound like Eddie Vedder.

Bobo Adobo

Dylan when he was young.

Dylan sounds like shit now. I saw him live and can not understand one word he sings. It sounds like an elderly man having a severe stroke.

Ghost of Fraiser
Mar 8th, 2004, 11:13 PM
well that goes without saying. I haven't heard anything of him recently, except i heard him when he did that one movie, he sounded awful.

I agree w/ Royal and Kevin (except for Rod Stewart), replace stewy with Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, James Brown

and how could no one put Marvin Gaye?

or any women ('cept Liz Phair)... Bjork, Ella Fitzgerald, Janis, Nina Simone?

The Anon

Have to agree with you on Ella. One of the best vocalists of all time

As much as I love Dylan's music, come on. Dylan has sounded like a disgrunteled old man since he was in his friggin early 20s. Not that there's anything wrong with that...but still.

Bobo Adobo
Mar 9th, 2004, 06:35 PM
Yeah, but his voice was funny sounding, and very distinct. I would agree with him not being one of the best voices, or even a good voice. But of course thats not the talent I recognise him for.

It's all about Maynard. He's probably one of the hardest working vocalists too.

Maynard, The radiohead gay, Reznor, are all over rated mainstream smacktards. I hope they all die, and take their angst filled whining with them. (though sometimes I still listen to some Tool)
I am surprised I didnt see more drunken Phil Anselmo ranting here.
