AChimp I haven't died in, like, seven years. Once you reach level 20, it's almost impossible to die.

You can have pet skeletons, too, if you find a staff of summon undead. You may also need a wand of transmogrify monster.

Helm Dude we didn't fucking restore after duying you fucking hoarder. Straight-up new characters every time, asshole.

Ok, you win

The pet skeletons did it.

AChimp Oh yeah, and all the rings, amulets and boots, too.

I'm only mentioning this to out-geek Achimp.
In CotW2 I've decorated the top floor with items I've collected. I have a bedroom, treasury, armoury and magic lab.

I've also collected one of every spellbook, every scroll, every potion and every wand.

And the elemental portal.

And I have three pet skeletons.

I have to lock them in a room when I sleep because otherwise they keep waking me up.

Edit: Here's some other EXCELLENT computer games in the same vein by Spiderweb Software. Really really addictive hardcore top-down rpgs. But these are quest driven, turn-based dnd clones, not roguelikes, but the gameplay and atmosphere's really close. I've killed so many hours with the exile series.

Helm Me and Mister Adventure rediscovered this game together a few months ago (he was going "it's the game with the dotted ground tile" and I was going "it's the game with something of the winds in the title" and we figured it out) and played through most of it simutaneously, sharing experiences and silly deaths. Only he played it hardcore. No restoring when you die.

I'm only mentioning this to out-geek Achimp.

camacazio Man I haven't played that game in years. I actually dropped the cash for the full version, and it was worth it.

AChimp Fuck yeah.

CotW is the best Windows 3.1 game ever made. I have the same saved game that I've been playing for about 10 years now (not so much any more, but I still play it for 30 mins now and then).

I'm about level 27, max everything with about 12 billion copper. Sometimes when I get bored of a dungeon level, I press shift+] (I think) when going down a staircase so that the level regenerates (SECRAT DEBUG FEATURE )

You can get CotW2 for free now (it's legit abandonware), and for a while, the author would send you the source code if you asked him nicely and talked programmer for a while.

The source is essentially useless except for some of the algorithms (random dungeons, etc).

Castle of the Winds

I don't see why people felt the need to improve rpg's beyond this magnificent program.
