kellychaos I'm all for free speech but if you have a grievance with the government, address THAT particular grievance directly and constructively. I see no point in insulting the men and women who have fought for this country. Although I don't agree with the recent ongoing war, there are those who have fought in righteous conflicts to protect our freedom and who deserve our respect. Actions like those mentioned above only serve to insult undeserving veterans, stoke fires which do not need to be stoked and are NOT constructive.

I can't agree more. Of course this is my emotions talking.
He has the right to do it.

I think hanging both Iraq and American flags side by side would have made a better point.

VinceZeb You sterotype Christians as not being human. When in fact, everyone is. Wow, he got mad. Wow, he may have lied. I'm sure he could bring something up about you every 2 seconds, because, Christ almighty, its getting really old.

Woah! The lies are flying! Can you tell me why you feel so free to make a statement you have no way of knowing the truth of? Why is alright for you to lie?

VinceZeb Wow. That guy has some balls. I am willing to bet he hasn't been in too many VFW bars, where P.O.W.s hang and hope that the future of America doesnt forget what they went through for the country.

kellychaos Why did this have to happen in Michigan?
Mar 19th, 2003 06:52 PM
Skulhedface Well, I agree with Free Speech (i.e. I don't agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it) but it seems this example is not just free speech, it could be equated with treason. Being anti-war is one thing, but on the outside this actually looks like you're throwing in your support for Iraq, and that's REALLY not going to help him out if he lives in a conservative neighborhood.

Bennett tasteless and disrespectful,
but when we try to pull the reigns in on things that are "tasteless" is when I think we run into problems.

ItalianStereotype hanging a POW flag upside down is completely tasteless. i can deal with an iraqi flag and the american flags upside down, but i am afraid i would beat this silly bastard until the only thing keeping him alive was the pressure of my fists.
Mar 19th, 2003 02:48 PM
FS Hurrah! Just a few more occurences like this and the Conservatives will have "won"!
Mar 19th, 2003 02:43 PM
Bennett I totally agree with what you said about vandalization and attempts to bog down the military, but I really don't see this as being too far. Unpatriotic maybe, but I think it's just a political statement that everyone in this country should be able to make. It will obviously upset people, but I think that is what was intended. The kind of shock people into thinking about something approach.
I'm not saying that I'm going to go do this at my house, I'm just disagreeing on where to draw the line.
Mar 19th, 2003 12:59 PM
ItalianStereotype i realize that free speech is one of the most important freedoms in our country, but there are times when it is taken too far. threatening to vandalize and actively attempt to bog down military bases in the name of "symbolic free speech" is a perfect example, so is this.

Protoclown I always suspected that Ronnie was an unAmerican, unChristian communist. NOW I KNOW, ALL THANKS TO MAX BURBANK!!!
Mar 19th, 2003 11:49 AM
mburbank Say, Nald! That's free speech, something America Stands for!!

NALDO HATES WHAT AMERICA STANDS FOR!!

Actually, I'm only making a point. Nowhere in there did Naldo say he hated wyhat the flag updside down dude did. In fact, he told him to keep it up. So, I guess this means Naldo is in favor of hanging the American Flag upside down.

That's not a lie, nalds. It's a deliberate missconstruction of what you were getting at to illustrate absurdity. I don't intend anyone to believe it, it's mockery. I hope that's clear. I don't want you all confused.

Miss Modular Yeah, that guy is definitely representative of all War Protesters.

If it was vice versa, you'd be crowing a different tune.

Protests get louder as war approaches

ROSEVILLE -- Antiwar protests grew more aggressive Tuesday as America's deadline for conflict with Iraq approached. And one pro-Iraq demonstration stirred an angry response in Roseville.

In downtown Detroit, dozens of activists chanted and sang at the U.S. District Court building. Twenty-seven of them were arrested for disorderly conduct for blocking entrances.

Peace groups have already established a schedule of protests for immediately after the outbreak of war -- one, for instance, will be at the Broadhead Naval Armory in Detroit the afternoon that war begins.

Individuals have also taken symbolic actions.

In Roseville, Mario Fundarski, who unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2000 and 2002, hung an Iraqi flag in his front yard. Beneath it on the flag pole hung two upside-down American flags and another upside-down POW flag.

The action sparked protests from neighbors and passersby at his 14 Mile Road home. One man, Jac Carr of Roseville, took down the Iraqi flag at one point only to find it back up a couple hours later.

Fundarski, who declined to comment, called the Roseville police after a group of angry residents gathered on his lawn. Deputy Police Chief Daniel Young said that, although the flags may be offensive to some, Fundarski didn't violate any laws.

"We live in America and we have constitutional rights," Young said. "They need to be protected even if they are of unpopular positions."
