Honestly, this is the first real time i've gotten useable critiques (in posts) from you guys  thank you bennett, da blob, subterfuge, glowgirl, and helm. everything you said has been taken to heart, and i really appreciate thank you all took the time to fully comment on this. ----- bennett: i did take some artistic licence while drawing him (concerning the lips, actually). it didn't take too long. maybe about 25 minutes. i'll post more, if you insist da blob: the original was busy working on the computer at the time. what happened is that i came across that picture, and i absolutely love it. i wouldn't have been able to get the same feeling because he has different glasses now. my other picture of him was from real life. it took me a good deal longer, but that's because i didn't want to offend him (i had just started dating him at that time) subterfuge: i agree with you on the hair thing. i rushed because i wanted to go to bed and i knew it would look even worse if i had left it overnight :/ glowbelly: i already mentioned taking artistic license on the proportions a bit. i didn't intend on the glasses being smaller, but it just kind of happened. i'm glad you like it Helm: i wasn't really tired when i started this, so i have no excuse for the rendering being uneven :/ that was probably just me wanting to get the picture done  i tend to do the detail immediately thing, as you saw one time on the whiteboard. i didn't want too much shadow in the piece, but i should have gone back and added some with a 6b. ----- once again, thank you all for your critiques, and i really do plan on posting more, and doing more from life. it's just so hard to do that since my favorite model is always busy or playing here on i-mockery

Hello. I like your drawing. Here's a few points: Your pencil rendering is a bit uneven. I think it has to do with the pencil strokes. I agree that some rough scetching always will show, but I think it would be to your benefit to maintain some sort of consistent flow in the direction of your strokes as you shade. The discussion about how the strokes portray the qualities of light, and volume is a big one and I'm not sure it really applies. The main problem is the messy rendering in the hair. In other places it's ok. Did you work from general to specific? I mean, did you add detail evenly, or did you draw the basic shape and then go "right, I'm going to work on the left eye until it's done!"? Since there's an uneven amount of detail and shading in places I'm guessing the latter? I'm also guessing this because when someone has such strong reference as a photo, he doesn't care about making strange lighting consistency errors early when detailing, because he can verify just by looking at the photo. Anyhow, the way you did the lips and eyes is great but the shading in and under the nose area seems lacking. The eyebrows could be worked more. Take note, I did not look at the original photo to see how this relates to that, because it doesn't seem to me that your drawing was about capturing reality in such a way that complaining about the glasses being a bit too big or whatever would be valid. The main reason I think there's a stylistic quality in this piece is the lack of tone and shading in large areas. This either suggests a realistic situation with much and harsh ambient lighting (think bright white flourescent) or that there is an attempt at limiting the amount of shading intentionally to go for a more artistic approach. Either way, I'm not too keen. I'd like to see different areas with different levels of brightness, like where the hair meets the neck, I'd cast a shadow from an abstract upwards point of light. I'd make that the darkest bit of the picture and it wouldn't matter too much if in the photo it isn't like that, it would just make the picture more interesting to look. Generally, shadows. |

it's a very good drawing, but the proportions are a tad bit off. this may have been intentional, for all i know, because it's soooo very subtle. the foremost eye is a bit larger and more angled, and the glasses seem the teensiest smaller. there's also something going on in the space between the nose and the lip that seems different to me. i like it. and i bet it would look fantastic colored. |

please plaese since you have the original at hand do not lower yourself to draw from a picture. It's so much better in the end even though at first sight the pic might be easier (wrong wrong WRONG) so go ahead. My best portrait is an oil painting direct from a guy who used to be a boyfriend (hahaha shame on me) but with no prior drawing neither sketch or whatever - but you catch the real thing that way. Go ahead and better do not try to do anything finished just lots of different fast done ones. *art professor mode off* (thank you for your attention) |

There's something just slightly off about it, maybe the bottom lip should be a wee bit bigger? It's so minute i can't even really pinpoint. fucking top-notch though. did it take a long time? just wondering if you've used real-time as opposed to photos. oh, and please post more... if you don't mind
