Darryl My standard buffet tip is $2 - $4, depending on the upscaleness of the place, the attitude/competence of the server, etc.

Tadao not tipping a pizza guy is dangerous to your property

10,000 Volt Ghost I used to tip even if they didn't do a great job until I was dating this waitress. She always told me not to tip if they did a bad job, the food wasn't the best or similiar reasons. That way the server knows that something is wrong. Be it the food in general, the service or how frequently they made their rounds.

Zhukov Who don't you tip Chojin?
Dec 12th, 2009 01:58 AM
Chojin i always give the pizza guy at least 4 bucks or 20%, whichever is higher

i figure he went the extra mile to get you your food, quite literally

executioneer guys what about pizza deliverers, is this the same set of etiquette or can we fuck them over a little more

bigtimecow tipping is a gray area for me. typically i prefer a server to stay the fuck out of my experience and just take my order, refill my drink, ask if i want dessert, and bring me my check. i hate conversations with servers. it's clearly fake and just like any conversation with someone who works in an establishment that involves customer interaction. it's just hollow

however, there is an exception. there's a china buffet near where i live, and i eat there with friends all the time. now remember, it's a buffet. there is nothing food related to order. there is no bar. the only thing your server does is take a drink order (which is water, tea, soda, beer, or wine, nothing fancy), take away dirt plates, refill said drinks, and bring your check. we are expected to tip, but for what? and because they are all chinese they don't say anything. they come to the table and go "you want drink?" and when they come to refill they say "you want more drink?" it just makes me think, if i was the owner of china buffet i would not hire any waitresses, save an assload of money, and just have people get their own drinks (maybe get rid of wine and beer, but that's not losing much) and there, done

mandatory tipping is stupid, but it's become such a norm now that when i consider going to a restaraunt and how much money i will be spending / am willing tp spend, i factor in tipping. if you don't want to tip, just don't fucking go

kahljorn If its super busy it shouldn't be a big deal if you don't tip them as much since they will be getting so many tips :O

it all works out MATHEMATAGICALLY

Dimnos When I talk about them fucking up I mean they never come by my table to check on my drinks and such. Or we have been sitting there with our menus down for a long time before they even think about coming over to take our order. If the place is just super packed and they are busy as hell that one can be overlooked. Stuff that is definitely the servers lack of giving a shit. I guess mostly just my drinks.

executioneer well they could theoretically be doublechecking that the kitchen got it right but yeah not a reason to not tip, especially if you ask them to fix it and they do

ItalianStereotype And if it was actually the kitchen's fault?
Dec 2nd, 2009 03:04 PM

Yeah, that's what I mean. But if they fuck up my food and drink, game over.
Dec 2nd, 2009 04:28 AM
Zhukov No worries.

Although it is a backward and barbaric culture. A real sign of poverty.
Dec 2nd, 2009 04:15 AM
Tadao That's fine and dandy, but I'm talking to countries that already have tipping certain jobs standardized. Next you'll want us to adopt free health care.

I eat in quite a lot of nice restaurants, I enjoy my food and I usually spend pretty big. If I am with a date I have no qualms in paying for it all. I don't think of myself as cheap, and to be honest I don't worry about money much. BUT I am against tipping because it's a good excuse to pay wait staff less. We don't tip in my country, and I have never been made to feel bad for not tipping, although since I have already said I don't care much for money I don't quibble about leaving the exact amount, and I will usually pay over the bill.

I tipped when I was in Europe. I don't tip here because it's not the done thing.

MarioRPG The thing I hate about tipping, is sometime the servers really suck. I still go for about 10% for that though but still.
How will they learn?
