El Blanco Like trying to take away the influences that act as the match to dynamite. You know, the guys teaching them to make the symtex vests.

Malevolent Long term consequences? You mean like inspiring a new generation of terrorists to hate the United States?

OK, listen. A stable, representative takes longer to develope than a polaroid.

I understand most of my fellow Americans have an attention span of about 5 minutes, but you have to realize something. Any goal worth accomplishing will take hard work and patients. Does anybody around here think of the long term?

mburbank I agree with george, but I'll take it a step further. I think we are in the process of overreaching. If we are lucky and don't begin the end of civilization as we've known it, we will find ourselves permanently encamped in multiple hostile locations which will drain our resources and create ever more enemies until we begin the slow, crippled slide into irrelavance that all formal world powers undergo.

Please God, let it be reasonably survivable like the British. Barring that, perhaps we can hope to go like the soviets and not vanish utterly. The only alternatives are going like the Egyptians and the Aztecs, leaving behind little but chaos and the remnants of monolithic architecture.

george nah. the war will be over before the northeast thaws.

the occupation of Iraq will never be over. the UN will appoint peace keepers, and the world will rape Iraq until there is nothing left but bitter people.

ItalianStereotype the next election will probably have campaign slogans like IN '04 END THE WAR and the bush administration will either have secured a republican presidency for the next 8 years or we will go through another one party dynasty like we saw after the civil war. after iraq i bet we will focus on iran, n. korea will be kept on the back burner because of its explosive potential....our economy will continue to get worse until people become accustomed to the war and start trading, buying, selling whatever, taxes get lowered and jobs are brought back. overall, our problems at home and with our allies will be more detrimental than the war effort...but hell, its all IN THE FUTURE...FUTURE...FUTURE...FUTURE...FUTURE

Afghanistan will be a peice of cake compared to Iraq, surrounded by opportunistic neighbors all of whom will want their 'security assured' at best and a big piuece of the action at worst.

Why can't we appply our North Korean foreign policy and pretedn it's not that big a deal?
