Abcdxxxx I was watching the Anderson Cooper broadcast....he was in the middle of interviewing someone when you could hear something was going on behind him, then someone shouted "12 alive, 12 alive" and people started celebrating. He was on camera for a quick second, and you could see he was wearing miner gear of some sort. At least a hard hat.

I think it's a safe assumption that the mistake wasn't the media's. Nobody verifies live reports, it's all heresey and live observation. The best anchors are diplomatic and try not to rush a verdict

ziggytrix There was a cave-in and for all they knew the trapped people were still alive. Somebody overheard someone saying "I heard they survived" and it got repeated by credible people without the "I heard" part. The mine officials weren't sure, so they didn't contradict it, and it just got out of hand from there.

That's how I heard it, anyway.

Dr. Boogie I missed the explanation for the switch. How did they go from saying that 12 miners were dead to alive? Didn't someone do a headcount?

AChimp I find it highly ironic that they went from singing religious songs to trying to attack the mine executives.

Royal Tenenbaum Why are these people sad? They are IN HEAVEN now! Why are Christians so depressed when people die? They're rocking it with Jesus. If that doesn't beat working a fucking mine, what does?

Immortal Goat This story is just depressing in every sense. I was watching the news last night, and they had video of everyone celebrating. The governor came by in a car with the window down saying "Believe in miracles". What is this going to do to these people after they thought that God had come through for them? Normally, I don't care about people's faiths being shaken (I actually view it as a good thing. it shows that they are thinking for themselves), but for it to be shaken due to something this devastating, it is just sad.

KevinTheOmnivore So one piece to this story that isn't getting too much attention is the fact that they called in 12 state troopers and a SWAT team to prevent chaos from breaking out in the town (apparently one family member did get his hands on a mine official).

ziggytrix a tractor combine is a viscious piece of machinery. fall in front of one of those and you might as well have dove head first into a tree chipper.

KevinTheOmnivore "farm occupations"?

ziggytrix

oh, and read this http://www.wsws.org/articles/2002/au...work-a22.shtml

people die at work every day.

Cosmo Electrolux I think so. If the mine doesn't collapse and kill you, the lung diseases will.

KevinTheOmnivore Yeah, this story is sad as hell.

And I'll never understand how the media happens to feel no shame. I guess this could often be a good thing, but for example, they had the governor of WV on the Today show, and they decide to bring the son of one of the coal miners on at the same time to "talk" with the governor.

Maybe i'm dreaming this up, but isn't coal mining ranked the most dangerous work in America like every year....?

12 Miners in W. Virginia dead

I'm sure you've all heard somthing about this. A while ago they said that 12 survived the colapse. Three hours later on live t.v., some lady ran up to Anderson Cooper and said they were all dead. All the familes had been celebrating and shit and they tell them all but one is dead. How F-ed up is that?
