Yes, debates are fun. But this whole argument about how I feel about love has been done two or three times already. Unoriginal bastards.

Now where are the bitches to suck my dick?
May 6th, 2003 03:41 PM
CaptainBubba Twosome.

sadie debates are fun. and you need to get real.
May 6th, 2003 03:32 PM
James What does that even MEAN?

And stop talking about love. I'm not going to end up having this become another debate.
May 6th, 2003 03:29 PM
sadie y'know, if you'd take those defensive blinders off, you'd see there's more than enough room in one's worldview for sex and love of all kinds. and threesomes, too.
May 6th, 2003 03:25 PM
James Blah blah blah. Stop bringing up love.

And sex isn't the most important thing in the world, but busting a nut's all I'm really good at. So I won't forget about it.

Threesome.

CaptainBubba I only wanna bang one chick. Two would just be awkward.

Actually even one would still be kinda akward...two would make me really nervous and my dick would get all scaredy.

kellychaos It doesn't sound like freedom so much as choosing between alternatives. You can just as easily be a slave to intellectualism. The truest "freedom", in the sense that you seem to be talking about, would be total detachment (in the Buddhist sense), wouldn't it? I think I'd prefer a balance myself than a slave to either.

sadie even our thought processes are governed by our experiences and innate wiring. what exactly is the mind to you? is it eternal? do you believe in an eternal soul?

i understand what you mean about denying your instincts in order to discover what's yours alone, separate from nature. but is it neverending? will there come a time when you're not afraid to embrace all that you are, including your instincts?

and, i think i've said this before, but happiness, while it used to be my main goal in life, is just a sliver of it. i don't know exactly what to call it, but i'm more into a rightness of being and acting--not right based on social mores, but right founded in what i know, and not "know" as in think.

i know i'm a rambler.
May 6th, 2003 11:27 AM
Helm No, but happiness is overrated. Being free is more imporant than being happy.
May 6th, 2003 11:19 AM
kellychaos What do you reckon about a man like Isaac Newton who was rumored to to have died a virgin. While I'm certain he was intellectually satisfied, do you think he was a happy man?
May 6th, 2003 11:14 AM
Helm I'm not talking about the freedom to act as you will, but the freedom to think as you will. It can only be had by denying your instinctual side.

And I ment, what do you propose one does since there's, as you say no freedom? Indulge in whatever makes him 'happy'?
May 6th, 2003 11:07 AM
sadie freedom is an illusion because even our "free" will is limited by the choices we're given. i see it work with my son every day. i give him choices so he feels some freedom, some control. as long as you recognize said limitations, you're "free" to say "freedom" exists.

and what do i suggest for what? jamesman's issue?
May 6th, 2003 11:02 AM
kellychaos I think Jamesman needs to rub one out before he self-combusts. Ain't no shame in that game. It's just us talkin', ya know. :/
May 6th, 2003 11:00 AM
Helm How is freedom an illusion?

What do you suggest, then?
May 6th, 2003 10:40 AM
sadie freedom is an illusion anyways.

and it sounds to me like jamesman is leaning toward the opposite of what you're prescribing.

Helm Love is a social construct, partly the rationalization of lust. Lust is the animalistic drive instilled in all animals, so as to mate. Therefore, we're using the only thing that seperates us from animals, logic, as an excuse to indulge in our instinctual urges. Instinct has a distinct main purpose, the continued existance of species, as well as a number of secondary functions that serve this end, like the need of dominance, or the inherent need of protection of oneself, and of his bloodline. Basic emotions are what it uses as tools to steer us towards these goals, thus when one does not mate, he is going to grow depressed. Furthermore, the cultural context of such a man, is no less instinctually-shaped, and will mark this man doing for not achieving his primordial purpose, in a number or ways. When a man mates, endorphin rushes to the brain, telling him that all is well, and he's doing his part. The hold instinct has on the human mind is amazing. Furthermore, every time one indulges in instinctual desire, be it 'positive' (mating) or negative (removing threatening factors, like people when in need) he is essentially making the instinctual grip over him stronger. We're basically selling our freedom for orgasms, because it feels good.

So Jamesman, my advice is: forget about sex. Channel your energy into something that you don't just 'feel' is good, but rather can be quantified as being important in a non-instictual manner, like artistic creation. Emotion is deceptive. Be more critical of your urges, and indulge in them with care, if at all. Do not act upon emotion lightly. Be aware that when you do, you're little less than an animal, and like an animal you're on a short leash, furthering goals that are not really yours.

And yeah, I'm silly for taking things too seriously, I'm aware.

I bet the absence of an apostrophe in "you'd" was purely deliberate and ironic just so people like me can fall for it and point it out, eh CaptianBubba?
