Opeth

After listening to a track sent to me by Grazzt and subsequently listening through all the others on my computer, i have concluded that Opeth is indeed the band that they are made out to be. I must have just heard mostly acoustic tracks, but all the ones of more than three or four minutes kick complete ass. Of particular note are "Deliverance", "Blackwater Park", "The Drapery Falls", and "Wreath". Good stuff, don't know why it took me so long to take notice of it.

Alas, a fellow Opeth lover! Yes, I absolutely adore this band!

But let's get one thing out in the open so that we can't be justifiably ridiculed by an Opeth-Hater.

Opeth doesn't play music, per say. They play muzak. Their idea of a song is a group of riffs! Hell, I wouldn't be suprised if these guys just jammed for 10 minutes and call what they played a song. Their 'songs' rarely follow any kind of structured pattern (Intro, Chorus, Bridge etc) and are extremely self-indulgent.

That being said, I don't care that all of that is true (and it is). I care that Opeth plays long atmospheric soundscapes that I can lose myself in for hours at a time. I fucking love Opeth. They are my drug of choice.

btw, Every album is worth checking out. Each is absolutely amazing in its own right. The dual accoustic guitars are just fantastic... I am now switching from Tiamat to opeth on winamp :o

<<another Opeth lover

But only recently. I started listening to them before me and my girl split up, someone had reccommended it to her, she left it here.. at least I got something out of it.

Deliverance seems to be the one i want, with all the tracks i like on it. Seems i have yet to hear ONE bad band come from Sweden. :/

Grazzt Apr 28th, 2003 07:04 AM

Sweden have a secret militia that takes out the bad bands.

As pj above shows, there's no shortage of completely horrible music from norway. And if you want some metal band names, just try listening to anything by oh, Hammerfall, to name one.

As to Opeth, I have all their records, and besides the fact that they've been writing the same album over and over, they're a cool band. It's just wearing thin.

pjalne Apr 28th, 2003 09:52 AM

Sweden ≠ Norway.

And Opeth rocks. Sweden does indeed have a better music industry than Norway does.

EDIT: That ≠ was supposed to be a 'does not equal' symbol. Stupid font.

Ninjavenom Apr 28th, 2003 02:26 PM

Oh, i'm sure there's some real crappy stuff coming out of normway, but sweden has churned out In Flames, Kalmah, Opeth, and Deranged, and those are all pluses. I'm digging Opeth's stuff now, cos all i heard was the acoustic stuff, but i even kinda like those songs now, too. I guess i always get the wrong impression when i only listen to one or two songs a band has done, without listening to other kinds of stuff they've done.

Helm Apr 28th, 2003 02:32 PM

Where did anyone say anything about norway?

And only americans seem to like In Flames so much. They were originally an At The Gates ripp-off, and later on put helloween elements in there. It sucks to no end, IMO.

Opeth :snore

I walked out during a recent concert (into -15C temperatures) cos I couldn't stand it anymore.

whoreable Apr 28th, 2003 03:23 PM

guess that means I shouldnt go to see them in may?

theapportioner Apr 28th, 2003 03:29 PM

If you wanna go, then go. My opinion on Opeth is a minority one.

whoreable Apr 28th, 2003 03:37 PM

I havent been real impressed with what little I have heard. I would basically only consider going just to get out but I am thinking I probaly wouldnt enjoy it much either. Maybe I should give them a bit mroe of a listen to decide.

theapportioner Apr 28th, 2003 04:11 PM

Hm. I find Opeth more palatable in small doses -- listening to an entire album, or set, is an aggravating experience for me though.

Helm Apr 28th, 2003 11:11 PM

true for anyone that isn't familiar with the material. I thought Morningrise was excellent when it was the only record by Opeth I had heard and I could listen to it all the way through. Not anymore.

I liked Opeth live, although they were a bit static.

Two Words-Still Life. Get it...NOW!

JonSwift May 7th, 2003 12:50 AM

Agreed. Still life, hands down, is the best Opeth album.

Helm May 7th, 2003 03:41 PM

Agreed. Morningrise's a close second.

Ninjavenom May 7th, 2003 04:08 PM

Bought Deliverance on Saturday. Good album, and i didn't realize at first that it was an hour long. Especially good for only six tracks, i must say.

whoreable May 7th, 2003 09:30 PM

I have decided I am not a huge opeth fan. They drag out their songs a bit too long for my tastes. Guess I have a short attention span :/

JonSwift May 7th, 2003 09:31 PM

What are your fav opeth tracks?

Mine is To Bid You Farewell (Morningrise)

Mütiilation May 7th, 2003 09:50 PM

i like the band, but i ain't going to make them out to be more than they are -- they're alright, nothing special. As for their best work, i'd say it was off of 'Still Life'.

The album starts off wonderfully with 'the moor" and i think the song "serenity painted death" was good too.

Ninjavenom May 8th, 2003 02:27 PM

I like the title track from Deliverance, but i am also partial to "Bleak" and "The Drapery Falls."

The Retro Kat May 10th, 2003 12:18 AM

Opeth :rock .

Zero Signal May 10th, 2003 12:43 AM

I'm going to the last show of the North American tour in Norfolk on the 24th with Lacuna Coil. The last show I saw about 2 months ago was amazing.

$10 :) Although I'd pay $30 to see these masters of their art.

Grazzt May 10th, 2003 11:48 PM

I like "Demon of the Fall" best, I think.

Zero Signal May 11th, 2003 12:25 AM

The last show I saw, that was the entire encore. :lol
