E3 2008

figured this is a big enough event to deserve it's own topic

what are your guys' HOPES and DREAMS for this conference?

Emu Jul 14th, 2008 01:57 PM

God of War 3 :hat

Fathom Zero Jul 14th, 2008 02:05 PM

I can't get excited about games anymore, much less E3. I'd rather go to Gamecock's thing in Austin.

Zomboid Jul 14th, 2008 02:06 PM

MARIO'S DAY AT THE BEACH!!

IN IT, THERE ARE A SERIES OF MINI-GAMES INCLUDING BEACH VOLLEYBALL, SWIMMING, BADMINTON, SAND CASTLE BUILDING, ROCK SKIPPING, AND SHELL COLLECTING!!!

I THINK IT WOULD BE GRRRREAT!!!!

darkvare Jul 14th, 2008 02:52 PM

watching right now gears 2 is just too awesome

bigtimecow Jul 14th, 2008 02:56 PM

Zomboid, i think you're thinking of super mario sunshine :eek

today was microsoft's conference i believe, and tomorrow nintendo's. along with a few others strung in between, like one tonight at 6, i just forget what it is...

darkvare Jul 14th, 2008 03:06 PM

oh also final fantasy 13 on 360 lol

Guitar Woman Jul 14th, 2008 03:16 PM

I'm hoping that joint venture between Hideo Kojima and Suda 51 gets some attention, because the fact that these two people are involved in the same project gives me reason to expect it to be the greatest game mankind has ever known

MetalMilitia Jul 14th, 2008 03:21 PM

I'm looking forwards to getting some Doom 4 info. Though I guess it's probably too early to expect any in-game footage.

Lobo Tommy Jul 14th, 2008 05:48 PM

I don't really give a shit about any new games except Ninjatown, which looks godly.

Phoenix Gamma Jul 14th, 2008 05:59 PM

I am a consumer whore, so the announcement of the new motion addon for the Wii Remote makes me pretty happy, even if it should have already been built into the damn thing. I hope the first game that uses it is something worthwhile (spoiler: it won't be :( ).

FFXIII coming to 360 was a nice surprise, along with that other new IP Square's got coming. Looks like that console is going to be the new home for jRPGs.

Mockery Jul 14th, 2008 07:36 PM

I'm actually gonna try making it to E3 this week if I can, so if there's anything you guys want me to photograph while I'm there (if I go) lemme know and I'll do my best.

Tadao Jul 14th, 2008 07:43 PM

Some furries if they are there. I'll donate 20 dollars if it's a bunny.

Phoenix Gamma Jul 14th, 2008 07:51 PM

I doubt it'll be crazy like it used to be :(

I miss the days when E3 was crazy and you struggled to keep up with all of the news for a whole week.

pac-man Jul 14th, 2008 07:51 PM

Get a pic with Reggie Fils-Aime, and ask him how to pronounce his last name. I've been saying fills-aim in my head whenever I read it, but wikipedia tells me it's fees-uh-may.

If John Carmack is there get his autograph and I'll pay you £50 (~$1000) to send it to me.

You've got to mean $100. Please tell me our money isn't that shitty... not yet.

try catching cliff blesinsky doing something crazy lol

Lobo Tommy Jul 14th, 2008 08:56 PM

Take a picture of a Xbox/Sony executive making an ass of himself.

Won't be hard.

I'm almost certain it's fees-uh-me. That's what they called him in an interview I saw way back.

EDIT: Nope, checked the gametrailers interview. Fees-uh-may.

MetalMilitia Jul 14th, 2008 10:04 PM

Looks like Id have shown a new Rage trailer.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/36283.html

Not much to say at this stage, it looks decent but nothing to write home about.

Guitar Woman Jul 14th, 2008 11:45 PM

lol

pac-man Jul 15th, 2008 12:45 AM

Get pics of Duke Nukem Forever and StarCraft II. I'd just like to know what development hell actually looks like.

Fathom Zero Jul 15th, 2008 12:49 AM

The Xbox is gonna have the ability to copy games to the hard drive to reduce loading times and reduce disc spinnage, a la the PS3.

bigtimecow Jul 15th, 2008 12:48 PM

OKAY HELLO NINTENDO

1. WHOEVER THAT GIRL IS IS SUPER ANNOYING

2. ANIMAL CROSSING WII? NICE

3. GTA FOR DS? WTF

darkvare Jul 15th, 2008 01:30 PM

well nintendo's conference sucked ass only animal crossing and gta ds are good

Guitar Woman Jul 15th, 2008 04:49 PM

Guys, remember back when we played games on consoles?

That was nice.

I'm also confused as to why everyone is BEWILDERED by GTA Chinatown Wars.

An original Grand Theft Auto game for a handheld system that doesn't mongle goat cocks is fucking great.

Fathom Zero Jul 15th, 2008 04:59 PM

It's happened before.

I'm curious as to whether it will be a top-down isometric perspective or a typical third-person game that the consoles are.

Phoenix Gamma Jul 15th, 2008 05:34 PM

Hopefully not the latter. I love my DS but that game would look like ass.

That said, Ninty's conference sucked. Animal Crossing got old pretty fast (and they can't even be assed to give the graphics a bump? There's good art direction, and there's N64 graphics.) Wii Sports 2.0 looks kinda fun with the Remote feature that should have already be built into the damn thing, but I'm not going to run out and buy it.

Here's hoping we get at least one announcement before the week is over. Last time they disappointed, they snuck Brawl in at the end. But after Reggie defended Animal Crossing as their hardcore game of the holiday season, I'm ready to buy a 360.

bigtimecow Jul 16th, 2008 01:01 AM

i already loved little big planet, but i am now fully convinced that i needa ps3 because that game along with a few others just look amazing

and for nintendo's conference i was hoping for some kirby or wario stuff or maybe something about the next zelda / mario game. but yeah, there's still 3 days left so who knows :eek

Chojin Jul 16th, 2008 03:29 AM

Phoenix, in a couple weeks the 360's menu will look just like the Wii's, so it'll be an easy transition. Also, no love for Punch-Out?

Don't know if it was mentioned at E3, but age of conan coming to the 360 in the fall is a great big god damn deal. After MMOs arrived wholesale on the PC, they've been choking the crap out of most other PC game sales; anyone in the industry who knows anything should be looking to AOC and Animal Crossing to see whether they should bother developing anything in the near future.

Phoenix Gamma Jul 16th, 2008 10:25 AM

Dead Rising is confirmed for Wii. Outside of E3. These are the things you talk about at a gaming conference, Capcom, instead of rambling on about Lost Planet: the Movie for 30 minutes and nothing else.

Also, I'm catching wind that Nintendo will hold a special "super double secret no girls allowed STAY OUT" conference today. This is exactly what happened with Brawl in '06, so I'll stay optimistic just a little longer :(

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 10:33 AM

Ok, that has me interested. What the fuck kind of reason would there be to not mention this at E3?

A game that lets me plow through a mall full of zombies with a chainsaw while wearing a Megaman Legends costume outside of a shop called "Jill's Sandwiches" deserves some attention, god damnit, even if it is a port of a game from like 2 years ago.

I just hope they don't skullfuck the engine and graphics; I know the Wii is capable of the 360's Dead Rising.

Holy shit, I'm actually EXCITED about this. What a scary and unfamiliar sensation :<

I should also probably import a Famitsu subscription like all the cool kids are doing, since even though it's in a language I'll never be able to read they seem to know what's what about things

Phoenix Gamma Jul 16th, 2008 10:41 AM

At least we know it'll be a solid port. Resident Evil 4 Wii was really solid for a game's third release, and even my 50 year old dad was able to play it.

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 10:44 AM

Isn't Okami on there, too?

Yeah, I should probably get around to that.

Phoenix Gamma Jul 16th, 2008 10:52 AM

I actually hear the Okami port is weaksauce. Capcom got Ready at Dawn (God of War PSP, Daxter) to port it instead of handling it themselves. It was kinda lazy; I hear the controls should have been better and there is some issue with graphics having too much color (doesn't look as paper-y).

Don't forget that they couldn't be assed to remove IGN's logo from the boxart and player's guide. I guess Capcom couldn't provide their own stock images :| These coupled with the fact that they didn't even list the original developers in the end credits, and you've got a pretty disappointing port.

It's not horrible, but it should have added to the fun instead of taking away from it, but that's a whole different discussion. Anyways, E3...

I chuckled. Gaming is so fucked.

Zomboid Jul 16th, 2008 11:08 AM

Yeah, I read that Reggie was rambling about sales figures and that kind of thing. Not the kind of exciting news you'd expect for E3. :lol Sony

Also, kudos on getting a port of a 360 game. That was one of the games I was thinking of the other day when you mentioned how there's only shooters on the xbox.

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 11:12 AM

How exactly do you "know" that?

At this stage the best looking games on Wii are basically equivalent to the better looking PS2 games (God of War and such). A long way off something like Dead Rising.

The 360 has three PowerPC based cores running at something like 3.2Ghz. The Wii has only a single PowerPC based core running at around 700Mhz.

This gives 360 developers the ability to dedicate a lot of processing power to a single task; physics for example - which is why Dead Rising was able to have tunnels filled with literally hundreds of zombies.

On Wii my guess is the physics are going to have to be basically stripped out in favour of more traditional animation-based death sequences if they are to have any hope of re-creating the scale of the 360 version.

Phoenix Gamma Jul 16th, 2008 11:33 AM

@MetalMilitia: have you seen The Conduit yet? It can keep up with all of these "next-gen" games. Looks really solid:

http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14248...ptorignne.html

Also, PS2 was the weakest of the last generation. I think you meant better looking Xbox games, seeing how the Wii is stronger than the Gamecube which was stronger than the PS2 :themoreyouknow

Well played, sir.

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 12:06 PM

It looks okay - I'll give it that, but next generation? That's a bit of a stretch.

To me that looks about as good as HALO (1).

Phoenix Gamma Jul 16th, 2008 12:14 PM

Exaggerate much?

darkvare Jul 16th, 2008 12:55 PM

actually halo 1 looks a little better

OK SO THERE'S CRACKDOWN AND DEAD RISING SHUT UP YOU SMARMY CUNT ;<

Also, MM, I "know" the Wii is capable of having something other than retarded stylized Mii graphics because it's basjlksfljksdl;jksaaf;ljkdsf just fucking trust me ok they shouldn't have to change anything if you can put RE4 on a Wii you can probably work Dead Rising in without too much hassle since it's only slightly more prettier anyway

Although I actually wouldn't mind a more cartoony look to the game, it'd probably fit the mood of it pretty well.

Fathom Zero Jul 16th, 2008 01:13 PM

Then why would someone not make a good looking game until the Conduit? (and I have my own ideas about that.)

Zomboid Jul 16th, 2008 01:13 PM

The mood of it is dawn of the dead. All of the little funny things are also part of that setting. I don't think cartoony graphics were what the creators had in mind for it.

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 01:14 PM

I think you may be right Darkvare, how about Conduit VS Daikatana:

It even has the same little flappy things :lol :

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 01:18 PM

I like how both those Daikatana screenshots are too dark to see anything in.

Are you sure that's not actually Doom 3?

I'm not too excited for The Conduit myself, seeing as High Voltage made the 50 Cent PSP game and all manner of shovelware shit designed to get money from gullible children.

Oh, and the new Leisure Suit Larry.

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 01:19 PM

Except for the giant flappy things in front of the screen - y'know the thing I was actually talking about.

bigtimecow Jul 16th, 2008 01:33 PM

look at metroid prime corruption, those graphics are quite sleek

fuck sorry :/

darkvare Jul 16th, 2008 01:44 PM

another thing i don't like about the conduit is the enemys they look like cheap ripoff of half life and starship troopers

bigtimecow Jul 16th, 2008 01:52 PM

i think the word ripoff is a little overused nowadays ifyouknowwhatimean ;)

Phoenix Gamma Jul 16th, 2008 02:38 PM

To be fair, the game isn't even far into development; it doesn't even have a publisher yet.

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 04:05 PM

Corruption's character models looked like crap, and that's pretty much my only complaint about the entire game.

Well, ok, it was a little too linear for a Metroid title, but that's seriously it.

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 04:07 PM

also suddenly I can see those Daikatana screenshots and now my quips lack a founding

god damnit

pac-man Jul 16th, 2008 04:46 PM

The Wii has carved out a great niche that 360 and PS3 will never be able to wedge themselves into, no matter how hard they try. I don't think ports are really going to do anything for the system or its fanbase, especially since it absolutely is not technologically up to par with the other two. Now, a Wii-ification of titles like Dead Rising could be great fun, but not a straight port.

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 04:50 PM

Dead Rising isn't incredibly impressive from a technical standpoint, though, so unless it's full of horrendous programming that requires CryEngine capable hardware to run it could work with a minimal amount of down dumbing.

God damnit.

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 04:52 PM

Yeah they should totally make a series of mini-games based on the Dead Rising universe.

Zombie bowling :lol

Zombie head baseball :lol

Super Mario's mini-game Zombie Adventure in time :lol

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 04:55 PM

Guys, remember that one time when I showed you No More Heroes and told you it would be fantastic, but you didn't believe me, and then later I was nothing but completely fucking right?

Trust me on this

I also remember that one time when I first saw Mass Effect in action and thought it looked like a colossal shit mountain. Right about that, too. I've got a sixth sense for these kinds of things.

pac-man Jul 16th, 2008 05:10 PM

I will acquiesce to GW's intuition on this one. However, with Nintendo's first party stuff and gems like Boom Blox and No More Heroes, I really don't see old Capcom titles as much of an attraction.

Zomboid Jul 16th, 2008 06:19 PM

Mass Effect is great. I haven't tried no more heroes but I doubt that I will.

Phoenix Gamma Jul 16th, 2008 06:21 PM

Eh, NMH's beauty rests in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I played through it twice, thought it was neat, and sold it back today for a PSP. Gamestop has my back on this, since they gave me more cash for Zelda DS : \

@pac-man: Mega Man 9 :D

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 06:25 PM

Mass Effect needed a lot more Wrex and Tali.

That's probably what the entire game should have been, actually, Wrex and Tali's Wonderous Adventure, Featuring Garrus.

Also at least give No More Heroes a chance

If you're not enjoying fighting a sexy, drunken moppet wielding a flaming baseball bat while she hits henchmen clad in bondage gear at you, you just aren't trying.

Phoenix Gamma Jul 16th, 2008 06:29 PM

Or it's just not your thing :E

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 06:31 PM

Guitar Woman, naming some of the characters of Mass Effect isn't fooling anyone into believing that you've actually played it.

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 06:33 PM

If the game had allowed me to actually play it I probably would have gotten off of the Citidel, but two hours of it was really enough.

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 06:39 PM

Right so you admit you have no fucking idea what is contained within 95% of the game?

Y'know - the less important parts like the story, combat, character development and all of the other levels.

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 06:42 PM

The combat is mostly the reason why I couldn't play the fucking thing. I also tend to stop caring about a game when it doesn't get interesting after 2 hours; the exception for this being Silent Hill, since it only really stops sucking once you get to the hospital.

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 06:48 PM

So what you're saying is because YOU couldn't figure out the combat system the whole game must suck?

Ever consider that you just suck?

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 06:52 PM

Well, yes, but it's hard to be good at something when it's that fucking broken.

Of couse, you won't accept this, and I'm not going to try to convince you. Mass Effect was not fun for me, and I usually am hardcore gay for Bioware.

A friend and I played through KOTOR three times in almost a single sitting, for christ's sake

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 06:59 PM

I've spoken to several people that played it on 360 and they all said it was great. Personally I played it on PC and it was also great - no problem with the combat whatsoever. In fact, though it was one of the game's best features.

I dare say you're in the minority on this one which brings me back to you sucking - not the game.

Even if I were to concede the point about combat (which I don't) you're completely ignoring everything else that made the game great.

So Mass Effect is a "colossal shit mountain" because you couldn't figure out the combat in the first level?
Is this that "logical opinion" you've been telling me about?

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 07:07 PM

Ok, get this. I don't like Mass Effect. The characters didn't appeal to me; I disliked most of them, save for the aformentioned two. The combat was almost a carbon copy of Gears of War, a game I found to be incredibly dull and stupid. Since my teammates were dedicated to stopping my every shot when I was trying the tired old cover-pop-shoot-cover thing, I ended up charging everyone with shotguns. It worked pretty well since apparently the other guys aren't expecting this, ever.

Nothing about the game's story interested me after playing it for two hours, and this is generally not a good sign. I quit, because I honestly found every other 360 game at my disposal to be more interesting.

Phoenix Gamma Jul 16th, 2008 07:12 PM

Woops. I clicked "LET'S ARGUE ABOUT VIDEO GAMES" instead of "E3 2008".

Wait, I did click E3 2008 :X Let's talk about E3 2008.

I think it sucked and I'm more excited for the next DICE or PAX.

This is not me saying "you have a friend? I doubt it", rather this is you explaining that the only reason you could stand KOTOR is because your friend did the really hard parts (like combat) for you.

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 07:17 PM

The fact that you believe the combat system to be a "carbon copy of GoW" just further illustrates my point that you have no idea what you're talking about and probably haven't even played the 2 hours you claim.
It had a cover system and was in third person - that's were the similarities end. What about the weapon mods and ammo types? What about being able to control your squad's load-out and command them to use their special attacks?

I don't give a shit if you didn't like the game, but when you start trying to make out like you're some kind of expert on it just because you saw your friend playing it for 20 minuites, it pisses me off. Just admit that you don't know what you're talking about then shut up about it forever.

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 07:20 PM

Yeah, because weapon mods completely change the way the combat plays out every time you install a new one.

COVER POP SHOOT COVER RINSE REPEAT, jesus christ

Well - yeah, actually. When you're fighting the geth you need to ensure you have your squad using appropriate ammunition types to improve their weapons' effectiveness against synthetics or which allow the bullets to bypass shields. Similarly mods which improve stopping power for shotguns can make fighting the husks (zombie things) much easier.

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 07:25 PM

No matter how much shit you load onto it, a shotgun is still a shotgun, and I'm still going to run blindly into the middle of the room and use it to kill everyone. That tactic did not fail me once.

It sure as hell beats crouching behind cover and taking 5 hours to clear a room because the game is horribly sloggy and gay.

Jesus christ, I hate it harder the more I think about it.

Fathom Zero Jul 16th, 2008 07:28 PM

No More Heroes is the only Wii game I have, soon to be followed by Madworld.

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 07:28 PM

Madworld looks aright, kind of like a stylised manhunt.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/34108.html

Guitar Woman Jul 16th, 2008 07:31 PM

Is the entire game in film-noir black and white with blood color spots? The only screenshots I can find are like that.

I could see problems arising from this, but at the same time that looks really cool.

DIDN'T SEE THE TRAILER LINK SHUT UP

IT'S YOUR FAULT FOR MAKING ME ANGRY

bigtimecow Jul 16th, 2008 07:35 PM

so, kirby for the wii? wow :eek

Chojin Jul 16th, 2008 07:59 PM

so this is the new defend your favorite game console thread? awesome.

i plan to play mass effect when it comes out for pc. if it's already out for pc, then I plan to play it when it comes out on steam, or when I get tired of waiting for that and pirate it instead.

also, we just took the wii on vacation and it was the best decision of my life, if for no other reason than the wiiware and virtual console stuff we were able to play from one box.

losing ff13 as an exclusive has got to hurt for chadwarden.

darkvare Jul 16th, 2008 09:12 PM

lol mass effect is already out for pc chojin check ea or maybe microsofts steam

MetalMilitia Jul 16th, 2008 09:13 PM

Oblivion and Bioshock, mostly. We also had GTA4 and some other stuff, but ragdolling yourself off of motorcycles is only funny for so long.

Now, before you go off on me for liking Oblivion while yelling at Mass Effect for having shitty fighting, let me justify myself by saying that I avoided most of the game's actual combat by pretty much exclusively stealth killing everyone.

As for the second part, that was my first exposure to KOTOR and we ran through it once in about 30 hours because he knew what he was doing.

I did ok, though. I don't see how you can be BAD at KOTOR.

Chojin Jul 16th, 2008 10:26 PM

i'm only using one steam, and it's the one not made by people whose OS i'm borrowing. and like I said, if it isn't going to come out for steam, i'd sooner pirate it than deal with all the pirate protection shit that comes with buying a licensed copy.

@pac-man: Mega Man 9 :D

MM 9 is new with an old look. Definitely an attraction worth checking out in my book.

I'm amazed that you were able to play 30+ hours in almost one sitting.

I love that game :<

Yeah.

So have you ever played KOTOR?

Guitar Woman Jul 17th, 2008 03:35 PM

Not to get off topic, but who do you guys think has had the best E3? Honestly, I'm underwhelmed by the offerings by all three, but I'd give Sony the edge. Maybe that's because that's because I also think the PS3 can't go anywhere but up.

I'd say it's a tie between Sony and Microsoft. I can't pick which I dislike the least out of those two.

I really think most of the stuff Microsoft is trying to do for the 360 and Live are really just aesthetic. And I'm less than giddy for the upcoming slate of 360 titles. Honestly, after perusing what's on deck for this year, the game I'm looking forward to most on 360 is Ghostbusters: The Video Game. Glad to have you back, Mr. Stay Puft.

Hey Rog, do you get to talk with the people of Blizzard because you where so cool too them with the domain? I know you won't get any surprising info from them, but I doubt you wouldn't want to talk to them anyways.

I think (from what little I heard / know) that Microsoft got me the most excited. Kind of pushed me over the edge as to wanting to buy a 360.
