XBOX Live

I am getting an Xbox soon, and will be getting Xbox live...

Post your thoughts on Xbox live here...

I've played Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO a bit online - it's ok but Capcom has to be the laziest fucking developer imaginable. Not only does the game use some sprites that must be 5 years old or more (I swear Morrigan has like 8 frames of animation), the online aspect of it is so half-assed... to call it an after-thought would be an insult to DOAX's volleyball.

Actually gameplay online is fine, little lag but no serious effect on gameplay. I might pick up PSO, but there is another regurgitation from another lazy developer. Why don't they port Sonic Adventure over from DC like they did for the GC? Or are they waiting for this xmas to drop that bombshell? And pay to play? Fuck you Sega. No other XBox developer is charging... and if you say "running servers costs money" or "downloadable content will be available for free" DIE FANBOY. Unless I'm misinformed, all XBox Live servers are maintained by MS to maintain quality control (which is why EA refuses to develop online games for XBox - they don't want MS to have all the control). Regardless, to my knowledge, Blizzard has never charged for play on Bnet, and if they can support the heavy traffic, there is no reason why Microsoft (or even poor little Sega) can't.

Lazy, greedy fucks... once Halo 2 comes online, things will be nice. No problems at all with Live yet though. Experience is good and smooth.

Sonic = Nintendo only, for now.

I play PS2 online and it's practically lag free with a 56k

Same with the DC although I don't go online with it anymore.

If it is a online rpg or something that is updated there is usually no way of getting around paying to play. It's the way it is. It was nice when PSO was free on the DC though.

MMORPGs are different because you need to maintain a gigantic database that stores each individual character's stats, location, items, and item locations. Then that database needs to have the ability to be constantly referenced and appended through normal gameplay, as well as when players and the game world change, all from loads of dedicated servers that simultaneously report the location, stats, etc. of every other player you see in the game world.

Nothing can be stored locally because then you could edit it. And cheat.

Battle.net isn't nearly as complicated because, while they do have a database, it's only referenced once upon entering the chat room and again upon starting a game or having another player join, with mostly direct communication between machines throughout to tell who has got what item, with information getting refreshed after lengthy periods from the official servers*. Not only that, but you can only have a handful of players in a battle.net, which, again, are all mostly managed among themselves in a game. And for things like Starcraft and Warcraft, the database isn't nearly as complicated since you start fresh every game.

* Let me know if I'm talking out my ass, but it's been done before like this and is the only smart way to pull it off.

The Sonic comment was a joke. I hate that game. :/

But good point, Chojin. I never really considered PSO an MMORPG, but I guess it is (or at least a quasi one).

heh just pointing it out. I liked the genesis games.

yepper, chojin

NINJA GAIDEN!!!!

Anonymous Mar 18th, 2003 01:02 PM

I just heard that ebworld and gamespot updated their Halo 2 delivery date to October and November 2004, respectively.

What the fuck? The XBox will be dead by then.

soundtest Mar 18th, 2003 05:20 PM

That hurts my feelings. Why don't they just release a patch for Halo 1?

Rongi Mar 18th, 2003 05:31 PM

Now, I do beleive this is probably a rumor, but I THINK, now correct me if I'm wrong, PS3 might come out around christmas time :(.

Cap'n Crunch Mar 20th, 2003 09:58 PM

It's wrong. It comes out in 2006. Same with X-Box 2. Nintendo is coming out with a new system in 2005. I think it will give Nintendo the boost they need. I got it from Game Informer. If it is wrong I am writing a letter to the editor!

What good games are out/coming out for XBOX Live?

What games do you people play?

Rongi Mar 23rd, 2003 01:59 PM

To be quite honest, I only bought xbox for Capcom Vs SNK2 EO :/. I don't really care for all these other games coming out for it :(. If I knew how to hack though, xbox would be my favorite system :o.

JeefGyle Mar 23rd, 2003 02:09 PM

If you hack your system, you cant go on XBOX Live

Rongi Mar 23rd, 2003 09:28 PM

I'd much rather play GunstarHeros then go online :(.

JeefGyle Mar 23rd, 2003 10:37 PM

Gunstar Heroes is badass. I used to beat that game all the time with my neighbor :)
