Does anybody know this?

I don't know why, but for the last two days of classes, I have been really gassy, with lots of nasty lower gastrointestinal activity. Whenever a bit of gas shifts within my large intestine, I know that I can hear it, but I simply can't tell if others can. If they have been able to hear it, then I must have the most polite classmates ever, because I get no indication whatsoever (I'd almost prefer if someone did turn to look, just so I'd know for sure). Are lower gastrointestinal noises generally heard by others, or are they totally within the body?

They can hear it, you fucking slob.

They can usually hear it, but unless you're a total freak they can't really distinguish it from noises made higher in the digestive tract that would just suggest that you're very very hungry.

Thanks, Seth. I figured such.

Maybe I'm just a total jerk, but if I were in a classroom, and the person next to me started gurgling, my natural reaction would be to at least glance in the noise's direction... That's what was throwing me off: nobody did ANYTHING.

Or maybe your school's students are very, very apathic.

It was embarassing because I was doing it A LOT, and the lecture halls were silent except for the teacher :/ .

Well, there is one way to find out. Rip one in class and if they turn to look for that, then they probably couldn't hear it when it was internal.

I've always thought that people can't really hear those internal gurggles unless they are particularly loud ones or other people have their head to your stomach.

sadie Sep 13th, 2006 08:49 AM

if you can hear it, so can other people. it's not like you're hearing it internally or anything. they probably just don't want to acknowledge your existance, period. i can't blame them, and i can't explain why i'm going against my better judgment in doing so either.

Next time this happens put your hand over your stomach like you're hungry. That way if people are paying attention or looking at you they'll think, "Man that guy's hungry" instead of, "Gross that guy's having lower gastrointestinal problems."

Sounds dissipate so I wouldn't worry too much but I'm sure at most one or two people could hear you.
