Spambots

How hard would it be to just implement a "type what you see in the box" thing during registration?

Tadao Dec 9th, 2008 05:13 PM

Rules are for fools

Esuohlim Dec 26th, 2008 01:41 PM

Or you know maybe set it so that if a person's first post contains a link there is an automatic ban?

MetalMilitia Dec 26th, 2008 01:48 PM

Set it so everyone starts off banned when they join.

Esuohlim Dec 27th, 2008 01:42 AM

It would sure solve a lot of problems around here funny boy

Sam Dec 27th, 2008 03:46 AM

BAN ANYONE WHO HAS AN AVATAR FEATURING GLASSES, HATS, ANIMALS, AND ANY COMBINATION OF SAID ITEMS. :rolleyes

DevilWearsPrada Dec 27th, 2008 04:55 PM

does a fez count as a hat

Sam Dec 27th, 2008 11:12 PM

Yes it counts as a hat, you fucking retard. >:

DevilWearsPrada Dec 28th, 2008 01:00 AM

Sam Dec 28th, 2008 05:57 AM

executioneer Apr 30th, 2009 12:43 AM

GROWLY FACE EMOTICON

Tadao Nov 25th, 2009 01:40 AM

Hahaha you should see how many spam bots are attacking right now.

Tadao Nov 25th, 2009 01:43 AM

executioneer Nov 25th, 2009 03:08 AM

jin was on, whuuuut

Tadao Nov 25th, 2009 03:16 AM

I knew that would be said.

Pentegarn Jan 6th, 2010 10:12 AM

I am bumping this to add my 2 cents to this plea. Please throw in a type what you see in this box step to creating an account like Milpool suggested. Please please please.

Zhukov Jan 6th, 2010 10:23 AM

I actually don't mind the spambots. I sort of feel sorry for them.

Pentegarn Jan 6th, 2010 10:36 AM

I didn't either till this last one posted a new topic in every single sub forum

Dr. Boogie Jan 6th, 2010 04:41 PM

We've actually had the "type the letters you see" bit on registration for some time, now.

That's the kind of spambots we're dealing with here.

Tadao Jan 6th, 2010 04:57 PM

It's been a while since I've made a character :(

executioneer Jan 6th, 2010 09:01 PM

how about a username filter of some sort- odds are pretty good if someone's name has the name of a prescription boner pill they're not here to comment on the latest tales from the longbox

you have to click on the link to get taken to a page that tells you what the code is. They used to get spam every hour, but now they get none. Like none ever.

..

Pentegarn Jan 7th, 2010 12:50 AM

^^^

This too

executioneer Jan 7th, 2010 01:10 AM

i know it's not likely to happen but for short term you could try blocking 58.253.* or 58.253.243.* and 58.253.246.* and 58.253.255.* since all the users we've ever had from those IP ranges are these dvd rip software spam guys

executioneer Jan 7th, 2010 07:02 AM

there's another, 58.253.243.177

Dr. Boogie Jan 7th, 2010 07:25 PM

Oh, I tried that argument before.

The problem is that even though those particular ranges include mostly spammers (or all spammers), we haven't banned them yet on the off chance that a real user might show up therein.

executioneer Jan 7th, 2010 08:05 PM

well the three-octet ones have gone thru before, so that could still work maybe?

elx Jan 8th, 2010 07:53 AM

i bet if you put the question "are you human?" with an empty form only accepting the answer "yes" that would work :3

Zhukov Jan 8th, 2010 09:30 AM

So... then they become human simply by answering 'yes'? :\

Chojin Jan 8th, 2010 01:46 PM

works for mexicans.

MLE Jan 9th, 2010 02:56 PM

hahahahahaha :<

kahljorn Jan 11th, 2010 08:43 PM

YOU SHOULD MAKE IT SO THAT THEY HAVE TO PLAY FLASH GAMES AND SCORE A CERtAIN SCORE :O

Colonel Flagg Jan 11th, 2010 10:27 PM

That could actually work. :eek

this would also keep the furries out

Pentegarn Jan 13th, 2010 10:11 AM

I'm for it!

executioneer Jan 14th, 2010 08:44 AM

someone ban 89.149.244.88, i REALLY hate the spambots that send you PMs and there's been three from that IP :(

Pentegarn Jan 14th, 2010 08:55 AM

Honestly I am leaning more and more toward the policy of if you have the default new user avatar you get banned automatically for posting in the fourms :P

executioneer Jan 14th, 2010 10:15 AM

problem with that is, a lot of the newer bots are actually putting non-default avatars :(

Tadao Jan 14th, 2010 12:56 PM

And those 3 are sending and link to a virus.

kahljorn Jan 14th, 2010 06:31 PM

:lol
report them to the FBI or some shit

I just received a PM from a spambot with a custom avatar. They're learning!

Also, one of the admin powers is that you can delete all the PMs a person has ever sent, assuming they haven't already been deleted. So if you are wanting to report a spam PM you've received, but it disappears suddenly, that's why.

Tadao Jan 15th, 2010 02:25 PM

Dr. Boogie Jan 16th, 2010 03:08 AM

If you've read the messages, I can pull them out of your brain and replace them with thoughts about how much you love the Doc Mock show.

kahljorn Jan 18th, 2010 03:29 AM

lol powerleveling345s :O

too bad there's no way to report people or some shit before they can spam it up

Dr. Boogie Jan 18th, 2010 05:35 PM

One of the last ones banned had his time zone set for Kaliningrad, South Africa.

Pentegarn Jan 19th, 2010 09:24 AM

Might want to look into ximike0119. No posts yet but he's set off all my red flags from what I have looked at thus far.

there are ways to tell if it's a bot, tho. if someone comes waltzing in here all naked, with no avatar, chances are that they are likely a recently respawned bot, sent here from skynet to terminate us.

executioneer Feb 7th, 2010 06:06 AM

http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...-registrations maybe this will work?

Womti Feb 7th, 2010 01:32 PM

Add an extra question to the registration to prevent bot registrations

This solution will only work for vBulletin 3.6.3 and higher. On the lower 3.6 versions it will allow for a blank response.

vBulletin already offers a lot of buildin protections against registrations by bots (automated) like CAPTCHA (Image Verification), Email Verification or Registration Moderation. These will however not always protect you against human-assisted bot registrations (registration process automated, a human provide the CAPTCHA verification).

Unfortunatly there is no way to block all human-assisted registrations, adding an extra question to the registration process can however frustrate this type and often they will simply skip your board because it is causing them too much work.

How to add an extra registration question to frustrate human-assisted bot registration?

AdminCP -> User Profile Fields -> Add New User Profile Field

Profile Field Type: Single-Line Text Field
<<Continue>>

Use the following information when creating the Profile Field:
Title: Can you spell?
(Note: Adjust the title to the question you want to ask)
Description: Enter the first character of the word "Monkey"
(Note: Adjust the question. Don't use this example as it would be quickly picked up by bot registrations)
Default Value: B
(Note: anything but a valid answer)
Field Required: Yes, at registration and profile updating
Field Editable by User: Only at registration
Private Field: Yes
Field Searchable on Members List: No
Show on Members List: No
Regular Expression: ^[mM]$
(Note: this expression would only allow a 'm' or 'M' as valid answers, adjust to your needs)

^^this?

executioneer Feb 7th, 2010 05:19 PM

yes that is what i did just post a link to thank you

Pentegarn Feb 8th, 2010 10:11 AM

EDIY: I forget who said "Welcome newest member" was a good way to find them but they are right I bet

executioneer Feb 8th, 2010 10:18 AM

good catch dude it probably woulda sent me PM spam >:

executioneer Feb 8th, 2010 10:19 AM

seriously though: can we just ban all of china? THEY PROBABLY ARENT ALLOWED TO LOOK AT THIS WEBSITE ANYWAYS. or maybe put up an article about tienamen square that would def. work :lol

Dr. Boogie Feb 8th, 2010 09:24 PM

And lose out on all that Evony ad revenue?

Mockery Feb 10th, 2010 02:17 AM

:lol

Those ads are so ridiculous... stupid networks.

executioneer Feb 26th, 2010 04:19 PM

hey can we ban 124.193.170.162, lots of spambots registered to that IP (i've banned at least five today)

executioneer Feb 26th, 2010 08:41 PM

eight

executioneer Feb 27th, 2010 03:42 AM

ten >:

Pentegarn Feb 28th, 2010 09:43 AM

While I think you did indeed ban all these spambot losers. Could we perhaps get rid of their threads as well, seeing them fills me with rage.

Pentegarn Mar 13th, 2010 09:50 AM

I am willing to bet the farm this one is a spambot

http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/member.php?u=12760

Kitsunexus Mar 14th, 2010 11:26 AM

Is there Rule 34 on spambots?

The Leader Mar 14th, 2010 01:23 PM

Fuck you and fuck your 4chan.

Kitsunexus Mar 14th, 2010 05:18 PM

NO U

kidding... I'll cut the /b/ shit. Sorry.

Grislygus Mar 17th, 2010 02:35 AM

suppliers314

Pentegarn Mar 17th, 2010 01:28 PM

They should just start naming themselves spambot(number here) It would almost be less obvious

Esuohlim Mar 17th, 2010 10:57 PM

I like the new ones we're getting where they don't spam but they try to post something relevant to the discussion of a years-old thread.

Pentegarn Mar 19th, 2010 10:12 AM

Is this guy one of them there spambots?

http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/member.php?u=12785

10,000 Volt Ghost Mar 20th, 2010 12:21 PM

I'm pretty sure that guy who has the vanilla ice picture and is "Thanking" everywhere is.

Colonel Flagg Mar 20th, 2010 05:05 PM

I think so too ....

Dr. Boogie Mar 21st, 2010 01:59 AM

I do too. I don't get it, though. No spam anywhere in his profile or sig.

It could be that he's just the world's least successful spammer. Apart from KGP4death, I mean.

Zhukov Mar 21st, 2010 02:23 AM

Actually, I think he' real.

Dr. Boogie Mar 21st, 2010 03:43 AM

All the same, I swept 6 needless thank yous under the rug.

Pentegarn Mar 21st, 2010 09:10 AM

Thank you

Esuohlim Apr 11th, 2010 08:54 PM

SPAMBOTS >:

The Leader Apr 17th, 2010 12:57 PM

This fucker

Nobody plagiarizes my words.

Dr. Boogie Apr 17th, 2010 08:30 PM

That one couldn't even post his spam in the TV/Movie forum.

Pentegarn May 20th, 2010 11:16 PM

This guy is a spambot, I would bet my (insert valuable things here) on it

http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/member.php?u=12425

10,000 Volt Ghost May 21st, 2010 10:36 AM

http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/member.php?u=13028

Dr. Boogie May 21st, 2010 05:06 PM

Did someone actually get a pm from that guy? I can delete PMs, but I can't actually view them.

His posts make him sound like a guy in rural Nanching who's trying to sound legit.

10,000 Volt Ghost May 21st, 2010 05:29 PM

He just sounds like Spam. That or he really likes Steel Reserve.

Tadao May 21st, 2010 09:10 PM

I think it's a malfunctioning bot.

http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/showt...979#post686979

Dr. Boogie May 21st, 2010 11:45 PM

Whatever it is, I'm through waiting.

Pentegarn May 31st, 2010 10:16 PM

http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/member.php?u=13126

I suspect this one of spambottery based off his weak attempt at a name

EDIT: Also this one

http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/member.php?u=13083

10,000 Volt Ghost Jun 2nd, 2010 01:06 PM

They should be hung for spambottery.

Pentegarn Jun 2nd, 2010 06:07 PM

I gotta admit even I was pleased with "spambottery" :lol

Pentegarn Nov 9th, 2010 05:48 AM

More spambottery here methinks

http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/member.php?u=12295

EDIT:
That was a fast banning

Esuohlim Nov 9th, 2010 11:25 AM

SPAMBOTS >:

Fathom Zero Nov 15th, 2010 08:27 PM

Ooooh, I like this new feature.

MLE Nov 15th, 2010 08:30 PM

Still working out the kinks.

Sam Nov 15th, 2010 08:50 PM

I FELT LIKE MY ENTIRE I-MOCKERY CAREER HINGED ON ME ANSWERING THAT QUESTION CORRECTLY. :(

Esuohlim Nov 15th, 2010 11:51 PM

What now

MLE Nov 16th, 2010 12:14 AM

Didn't work, rolled back, thinking up something new.

Esuohlim Nov 26th, 2010 01:53 AM

It's like 30 a week nowadays >:

And I just banned one that had "Banned" as its user title already.

Since we get an actual real new person twice a month we should just close off registration and implement an interview process

Esuohlim Nov 26th, 2010 01:54 PM

Holy good goddamn spambot cleanup :eek

MLE how are you doing that

MLE Nov 26th, 2010 01:55 PM

I am amazing. Thank you.

MLE how are you doing that

probably through the 'find all posts by...' function and then clicking the 'select all' box

then when you delete them the forum is like 'WHAT POSTS? ;)'
