Tonight's "beggar's night", as they call it here (and I hate that, it makes my fucking teeth hurt just to say it), was a total disappointment. My parents on one end of the subdivision got 16 kids and we got 3. Only one of the slew of the neighbor kids came, even.

Gee, good thing I put together all those bags with candy and spider rings and Big Boy coupons :(

What is this? Some sort of pre-Halloween for the kids of parents to scared to let their kids out on Halloween?

:lol The big boy coupons, I almost forgot all about those. My neighborhood was completely dead, nothing like it used to be.

Kitsa Oct 29th, 2010 03:28 PM

Yes, Beggar's Night is a stupid Ohio phenomenon. I fucking hate that name. It's usually the Thursday before Halloween, but sometimes it's the Saturday. I think it's their way of keeping little kids out of the way of asshole teenagers and nefarious types on Halloween proper.

I ended up giving the 13 year old kid next door like 10 bags of candy, and there are a good 15 left. I was so disappointed.

We live near a retirement village filled with cranky old people who hate kids. One end of our street is young grandparents (40s and 50s) who are into it, and the other end is full of po' folks who are into it but only for the taking part, not the giving. So all in all there weren't that many houses giving out treats.

Still, the baby got a pretty good haul for a baby. And we were telling people we didn't need candy.

Dimnos Oct 29th, 2010 03:37 PM

Dare I ask what big boy coupons are?

The Leader Oct 29th, 2010 03:58 PM

Coupons to Big Boy.

Dimnos Oct 29th, 2010 04:09 PM

They still have those up there?

Kitsa Oct 29th, 2010 04:10 PM

You buy a strip of 8 big boy coupons for $1. Each coupon is good for one free kid's meal and they print the menu on the back so you can see what you want to redeem the coupon for. It's not a bad deal, although a kid might think you're ripping them off if you don't also give them candy.

Dimnos Oct 29th, 2010 04:13 PM

$1 for 8 kids meals? :eek

Kitsa Oct 29th, 2010 05:08 PM

Yeah. I have the feeling they're banking on the adults' entrees.

Dimnos Oct 29th, 2010 05:23 PM

I would just eat two kids meals and have lunch for four days on $1. :lol

Kitsa Oct 29th, 2010 05:24 PM

10 and under, says so on the coupon :)

Dimnos Oct 29th, 2010 05:31 PM

I MADE AN HONEST EFFORT TO GET INTO CLASSIC DOCTOR WHO BUT I WAS BOOOOORRRRRREEEEEEEEDDDD >:

Watched like 15 full serials, and three of them were arguably the best of the entire series (Robots of Death, Genesis of the Daleks, City of Death) and I was fucking climbing the walls

Guitar Woman Oct 30th, 2010 09:36 AM

My favorite old Whos are probably The Mind Robber, Tomb of the Cybermen, and Genesis of the Daleks. But yeah, I think a lot of the oldies are insufferably dull, mostly because the stories for every serial could be told in about half the time they all take (although to be fair, I've only seen about 6, and most of them were the first and second Doctors so that might be early installment weirdness). It helps if you watch them stoned. Even then, there are a lot of points where I thought, "Goddamn, just get on with it;" The Cybermat deploying scene from Tomb is the first example that springs to my mind, they spend something like ten cocking minutes turning a bunch of robot lobsters on.

New Who is pretty excellent all around, especially after it broke free of the "cable-access production quality" feel that the 9th Doctor's episodes had. Steven Moffat is an insane genius and Karen Gillan is more or less the cutest person on TV.

When my explanation of why I like something involves the phrases "If you look at it in context..." or "For it's time..."; then I'm just going to back down and say it is bad. :(

I rate the Marx Brothers as having produced some of the best films ever. They are still b-movies and difficult for a lot of people to watch.

I had to take classes to understand what the hell was going on in Shakespeare's plays. I imagine it is much the same deal.

Pub Lover Oct 31st, 2010 05:25 PM

Did the Chaplin Time Traveller story hit the folks in this corner of the web? I liked that.

Guitar Woman Oct 31st, 2010 05:49 PM

Someone explain Dungeons and Dragons to me, briefly.

I think I understand the basic idea, a more free-form version of a board game that massive nerds utilize as a vehicle for storytelling, but I've not really grasped why it's a big deal. Then again, the furthest I've gotten in tabletop gaming is collectible card games. YuGiOh, specifically, which I played because my attention span didn't allow for productive games of Magic. Also, every single Magic game I ever played was completely one-sided, in which I'd manage to get three land cards and one monster out on the field before being utterly and embarrassingly annihilated.

Since I'm a massive fag and something of an emo I'd consider trying my hand at a game of Vampire: The Masquerade if the Old World of Darkness stuff wasn't out of print, if only to troll people by being a fishmalk or inciting fisticuffs inside fatally-enforced neutral zones.

Pub Lover Oct 31st, 2010 06:03 PM

Never played. I've tried card games and tabletop miniatures. I always get beaten by those lucky chaps that have the time and inclination to learn a billion game rules from a thick tome they always carry but never open. I think it is about hanging with your friends and never quite getting to the circle jerk over the beautiful lady that is totally into you that your party just saved from a dragon.

I envy them so much. :(

Pub Lover Oct 31st, 2010 06:04 PM

I liked this story just from the first page: http://emcarroll.com/comics/faceallred/01.html

Fathom Zero Oct 31st, 2010 06:08 PM

Esuohlim Oct 31st, 2010 06:33 PM

Speaking of British TV, a friend let me borrow her Jeeves and Wooster DVDs. While I can observe the fact that it is pretty funny, I can't get past the stuffiness and color-scheme of the show. Everything is fucking brown, man. Gross

Kitsa Oct 31st, 2010 06:37 PM

from what I learned in the Saturday morning cartoon, there were these kids who went to the amusement park one day and they got on this rollercoaster. But then the rollercoaster track went all kerfuckety and they ended up in a magic land where this little guy looked Asian but wasn't and there was this unicorn that acted like a dog. Also, the black chick wore a fur bikini and was able to pole vault over shit with a glowing stick.

hope that helps
