DVD capturing questions / Windows Media Player
I have some old shows on DVD and would like to capture the videos (preferably to .WMV format) from them so I can use bits 'n pieces in various articles. How can I get Windows Media Player 9.0 to do this? Thanks in advance for any help.

i was not aware that any version of windows media player could record videos :/
|
Ok, well are there any good programs that can create .wmv files straight from my DVDs? When I try importing the .vob files off of my DVDs into my video editing program, there's no sound whatsoever. All I really need is to be able to create .wmv files from the stuff I have on my DVDs.

Yeah I know how to use Google too, I'm asking if there are any programs you guys would recommend in particular? Any that you've had experience with. I've downloaded a variety of video capture programs in the past and some of them were pretty shitty/glitchy.

i'd recommend dvddecrypter myself
so does doom9.org, they have great guides on doing all kinds of crap with video (NOT SPAMMING >: ) http://www.doom9.org/dvd_ripper_comparison.htm http://www.doom9.org/software.htm#rippers |
and then (i think) you should be able to convert it to .wmv with windows movie maker? idk i've never really tried to convert TO .wmv before :lol
|
I actually have that program installed already, but it doesn't appear to rip stuff from DVDs directly into .WMV format, unless I'm doing something wrong. All it creates is .VOB files
|
ok yeah and then you have to get the .vobs into .wmf format, and to do that you may have to convert to .avi first and then use http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...r/default.mspx
that? hmm i think virtualdub MPEG2 can open .vobs, and it may be able to save them as .wmvs lemme check it out |
ok actually i don't think it can save them to .wmv but it can save to uncompressed .avi (so there will be no loss of quality, but for a short period you will have to use up a BUNCH of hard drive space) and then that microsoft converter ought to be able to convert that to .wmv with minimal loss

Thanks Willie.
I'm just gonna hunt around and see if I can find any software package that has good ratings and does what I want (I don't mind buying one if it's good since most "converter" programs run a max of 30-40 bux). |
the one thing i found earlier that had good ratings and said it was for dvd ripping to wmv was xilisoft or something ;o i don't know if it does it directly or does something like what willie said, though.
i was gonna recommends doom9.org |
Yeah I was using xilisoft video converter last night to convert a .VOB file to .WMV, but whenever I use it, the video appears to be slowed down big-time and the audio is all out of sync. :/

gay ;o ill try to see if i can find something when i come home. Usually what i do when I'm trying to find information on stuff like dvd rpping/burning is search for message boards where people are trying to rip similarly and somebody usually has some good advice.

You might be able to use Fraps to record everything on your screen into AVI format! :O
|
You can use yasa video converter to convert vob to wmv. It works very well.

I could be completely off here, but what I'm getting is that you want:
-Be able to save certain parts of a DVD you are playing to be used at a later time in a simple codex format to use in articles? I would suggest VLC media player www.videolan.org . Since it supports almost every type possible, you can either take snap-shot's or record clips (that I've never heard of anyone having problems with sound) in several different ways. You have to fuck around with it a little, but you can do almost anything to whatever your playing on it. I have used this several times, of course if I mistook what you have said; I apologize. |
I use Magic DVD Ripper. It's real easy to use. You can pick out what to rip, and it lets you choose the destination and file format. I use this a lot to back up shit. Might be useful for your purpose as well.

Is there any way I can use Magic DVD Ripper without paying for it after the fifth use? :(
