PA Government to close down Centralia forever

It's too bad. Centralia was a pretty cool place conceptually, with it's 40+ year long underground fire.

So long Centralia, I wish I had gotten to visit you before you were leveled.

Evil Robot Feb 6th, 2010 03:46 PM

Is that the town that's getting swallowed up by hell?

Hi, Judge Alvin ^.^

Jeanette X Feb 7th, 2010 10:44 PM

Why don't they build a power plant over it to harness the heat of the raging fire?

Or is that just not practical?

Esuohlim Feb 8th, 2010 12:00 AM

Because building a power plant on land collapsing in on itself is dangerous?

Evil Robot Feb 8th, 2010 01:03 AM

why? it'll be way more fun after it's dead

The Leader Feb 9th, 2010 07:27 PM

No, it won't be because it will just be fields with a lot of sink holes that are on fire. As it is now that's practically all that is left. :(

Tadao Feb 9th, 2010 07:47 PM

What am I missing here? A town with an underground coal fire that releases poison and pollution into the air is now (after many decades) forcing land owners who thought it was a giant conspiracy to move the fuck out and a few people are sad about it in some way or another because they think it's cool. Weird.

elx Feb 9th, 2010 07:51 PM

sounds awesome to me

executioneer Feb 9th, 2010 07:59 PM

it makes me want to find another town with a huge coal seam under it and set that on ifre :eek

10,000 Volt Ghost Feb 9th, 2010 10:41 PM

Like if they swept the great chicago fire under the carpet.

Sam Feb 9th, 2010 10:49 PM

It wasn't so much cool (though admittedly a fire that lasts decades is cool) as it was a town of almost legendary status. They based a video game on it even. Protoclown wrote an entire piece on the place. It isn't the town itself going away that is sad, it is that a legendary fixture of middle America (albeit an esoteric one) is going away.

Dimnos Feb 10th, 2010 10:21 AM

You can still go here.

It's gonna be even more like the game/movie after they get those idiots still living there out of there. I don't think the fire is going away any time soon.
