Oscars Out of touch with America?
I couldn't find a good article about this but apparently all 5 of the nominated bes pictures didn't gross half of Star Wars combined, and people are saying that the Academy is falling behind on what America's tastes are.
I say the academy doesn't need to give a shit about what grosses what and what movies are popular. It's a about a piece of artwork, if it was about stupid crap like box office dollars then why not just make the entire system an online AOL poll or something... |
I like to see Madea's Family Reunion win everything even though it was not nominated (Even best soundtrack which is just Madea farting)
But seriously the Oscars shouldn't matter to anyone outside the movie business. |
America out of touch with movies that don't completely suck? I'd say yes, although at least 2 of the 5 best picture noms are complete shit (those being Munich and, even worse, Crash).
|
Crash was shit.
And btw, Europeans eat up the shitty pop corn flicks we make, which is why just about every American film at least breaks even. There's nothing new about this either. This debate went on last year over Passion of the Christ. This debate happens every year, and no, it won't change (otherwise Shrek and every Shrek-like film would need to get nominated every year). |
Popular hasn't meant best since the freaking Beatles.
|
Outside of Crash, I'm actually content with this year's nominees (Brokeback, Capote, GN&GL). With the exception of The 40 Year Old Virgin, Walk the Line, and (maybe) Sin City, most of this year's major studio output sucked anyway.

I can't remember the last time I've seen a new movie in a theater during it's premiere cycle. Movies now are just pointless rehashes. You've got to look for that diamond in the rough nowadays.
I just buy DVDs, which are, coincidentally, cheaper than tickets for many of the movie theaters in my area. My tastes do stretch further beyond the realm of B-Movies, though. The one I really wanted to see was "When A Stranger Calls", being a fan of the original. However, I think I'll wait for it to come out on DVD. |

It's now officially the most expensive and most recognized afterschool special EVER.

Good call.
I saw the remake of a stanger calls in theaters, expecting it to be really good to make fun of. It wasn't even that. It was just painfully bad. |
