Over heating laptop
 

My laptop recently started getting real hot when i am playing any sort of graphically intensive game. It over heated and shut off so i quit playing games for a while. However i downloaded a program to monitor how hot my computer gets (the cpu and gpu both run around 70 c while idle :() and i booted up a game to see how hot it would get. Now in every game i have tried the graphics are wacked out, everything has gone all spiky, could this be the result of physical damage to the gpu?

It's probably just caked up with dust and shit. Laptops can be quite tricky to take apart so the best thing to do is download the service manual, get access to the cooling assemblies of the CPU and GPU and give them a good clean with a can of compressed air or just a fairly stiff paintbrush.

Vertex errors such as those you're describing are typically indicative of a heat issue with the GPU but if you cleaned it and it's still not working properly it could well be as a result of damage. I guess it could be worth getting one of those tray thingys that cool the underside of your laptop just to be sure.

some one recommended that i put thermal compound around my heat sink, would this make a difference?

Might make it worse unless you do it properly.
You'd need to actually remove the heat sink, clean off all the existing paste/grease and apply a fresh layer of better stuff (Arctic Silver 5 is a good choice). This will probably help as many pre-built systems come with poor quality thermal paste, poorly applied.

It's definitely something worth trying but don't expect miracles.
