This is pretty much the only game I've ever had difficulty playing with the lights off. Is there anymore tense and frightening scene than first walking into that hotel room and seeing white noise on a TV and what could be a body (dead or alive) facing away from you? It must have took me ten minutes to approach that that chair...
Actually, I love the long, drawn out beginning. I feel it really set the tone of the game. The ambient sounds preparing you for something that never comes is a master stroke. |
i still need to get into this series. I've only played about 1/2 of the first and then stopped for some reason.
|
How about the scene with pyramid head and the two mannequin creatures. I remember watching that and going "What the...is that...oh man...this game is messed up!"
|
great game i actually started playing it again this week
|
I canīt for the love of Nyarlathothep play this game further than to the appartment building. I donīt know why, but I get so bored out of my mind by then, that I just turn it off. Which is really sad, since I like Silent Hill (and I am one of the 7 people that think "The Room" was awesome). Gotta try Part 2 again one of these days...

Freakin' hell... I just thought of the prison stage. How cramped the hallways and the cells were - with that incessant demonic sound that kept happening, but never materializing.
And the prison courtyard/gallows? With the galloping horse that you could never see? Fuck me Santa with a chainsaw. |
I enjoyed the first one more. It's been a while since I played so I can't remember exactly why. Haven't played any of the thirty other Silent Hill's that have come out since, as I read they're no good.

I'd just like to say that Silent Hill:Homecoming on the PC is one of the worst gaming experiences of my fucking life.
|
And the invisible prisoners that said "Ritual" and "Are you sure" during the prison level were the scariest fucking things about this game
|
NecroLemur, I definitely had a similar experience when hitting the room that had a sitting guy in front of a TV with nothing but static. In fact, when I actually had the balls to get close to it I was expecting to see a sudden camera change to the rotten remnants of a violated corpse or something.
Glad that didn't happen. This is a game I never finished, because a friend lent it to me for just a few days, but the nurses that appeared just as you entered a room were the scariest thing I ever faced. |
I also have just started playing this game. It's great.
You're right about the mood and music, of course. There is one room filled with butterflies. I'm telling you, the mood I had from playing up to that point, along with the music in the room itself; I was scared. Of butterflies. Good game. |
Loved Silent Hill 1 - played all the alternate endings.
Got to the maze (?) under the lake in Silent Hill 2 and stopped... Haven't gone back to finish it in years. I may have to give it another whirl one day... You're spot on about the music though... |
1 will always be my favorite although I will admit 2 is the best. But my order is 1,3,2,origins, 4, homecoming.
|
I like this game, but honestly I lost interest in it before I finished it. I still love the first game, though.
|
SH2 and Homecoming are the only ones I actually finished. SH1 I lost my copy of and never replaced, SH3 always crashed near the end (PC version), and The Room just didn't do it for me after the first half. Origins I never even played.
Despite all of that, SH remains my favorite franchise ever. Even when I'm not playing/replaying one of them, I constantly listen to the soundtracks. |
Silent Hill 2 was so iconic that every game since copied something from it. The sexualized nurses, Pyramid Head, etc.
