The Cost of Great Education

Clearly, I cannot afford it. I don't qualify for Pell Grants and my Stafford loan is laughable. I've missed all the deadlines for scholarships (which were few and rare, given my career choice which isn't in science, IT, law, medicine) so that's out. I'm trying to take out some loans but if that fails: Does anyone have any idea how to pay for school? I know it has been done and that it can be down - but how? Help is much appreciated!

The pole.

BlueOatmeal Apr 18th, 2006 05:38 PM

I think what Seth is trying to say is that sucking dick is a good way to make some green.

In all honesty though I have no idea. Sorry

First of all, what is your GPA?

Hugh_Bristic Apr 18th, 2006 05:59 PM

3.8.

Esuohlim Apr 18th, 2006 06:00 PM

You shouldn't have slacked off in high school like I did only I was smart enough to get half my tuition paid for hope this helps

Job+School= money for education.

A lot of students actualy work for school if im not mistaking.

Not everyone gets the easy route. you will see "summer jobs for students" signs shortly, usualy with a phone number attached and plastered to telephone/light poles all over town. heed them...

Hugh_Bristic Apr 18th, 2006 06:38 PM

I have two jobs and currently take 14 hours of school. I don't have a problem working, I don't have a problem saving but it's still nothing in the face of $20,000/yr tuition. Does anyone know the best place to take a loan out? Is there a specific type of loan I should look for? Is "don't be dumb and oh yeah, get a job" the best you guys have to offer?

WhiteRat Apr 18th, 2006 06:50 PM

I recommend getting a loan because you may end up burnt out and unwilling to even keep going to school. That's what happened to me. I tried to work 40 hours and take 13 or 14 credits and ended up dropping out because I couldn't handle it anymore.

But then again, not everyone is as lazy and unmotivated as me. Go with a loan.

Are you a high school senior? Talk to your guidance counselor or a teacher with half a brain if you have one.

Did you submit a FAFSA?

Failing that, I'm sure there's a shit-ton of info at http://www.studentloannetwork.com/ and elsewhere on the web, but I'm not even about to research it for you.

I paid for my school with a combination of workstudy programs, scholarships, grants, loans, and a bit of help from my parents (whose income and savings reflect quite a bit on your grant and loan eligibility).

Hugh_Bristic Apr 18th, 2006 11:06 PM

Haha. Am I a high school senior? Dude, we met! I'm 21. A transfer student. I've talked to the financial aid offices of all the schools I've been accepted into and they all just say "Yeah... take out a loan."

I submitted my FAFSA and seriously, all I got back was qualification for a Stafford loan ($1200/ACADEMIC YEAR). I didn't get any grants and again, I've missed all scholarship deadlines. (Better luck next time, I know.) My mom's a social worker but last year she married some jerk who makes a lot of money so when they filed jointly this year, I had to include their combined income. The problem is, they'll probaby be divorced within the year and his income has nothing to do with my education. My dad refuses to help me because he says there's no money in social work and it's a "bad investment." My older brother is currently in med school and one of my younger brothers is also going to college. I know, boo-fuckin'-hoo. I'm just trying to find out if anyone has done school on VERY limited funds, without the help of parents, etc., and if they have any suggestions (barring prostituion, drug selling, etc.). So, anyone?

WhiteRat Apr 18th, 2006 11:40 PM

Sell drugs to the military.

I qualified for a full grant because my parents' combined income isn't that high--we're talking a 1st grade teacher and an animator. I still have to pay rent on my own plus living expenses, so I work 20 hours a week in addition to taking 16 units..granted, 4 of those units are just music groups that meet for an hour a week :/

DamnthatDavid Apr 19th, 2006 05:28 AM

I work 2 jobs, joining the military, and I to lazy for school.

ROTC buddy.

Chojin Apr 19th, 2006 08:38 AM

Okay, since everyone else would rather just talk about other stuff, I'll try to actually answer the question.

Hugh, I'd recommend you go to your bank and talk to a financial advisor about student loans; I could tell you everything in the world about business loans but I haven't needed a loan for STUDIOUS PURPOSES for some time now ;< I'd recommend that URL that Ziggy provided as well, but for learning about what your options are and how to go about exercising them, you should speak to someone who grants loans on a daily basis.

And when did you turn 21, you little liar ;<

glowbelly Apr 19th, 2006 09:45 AM

orrrrrr maybe you could cut back to part time school, take the stafford loans and work more to save some money for next semester?

orrrr like someone else said, try settling for a less expensive school.

if you aren't willing to do either of those, i would think that a loan would be your best option. i think that there are some banks that offer low interest student loans for people who don't qualify for the standard federal loans. the interest rates are a teensy bit higher, but they aren't through the roof like most loans are.

I didn't think you were that young, that's why I asked. When you're pushing 30, that whole 17-23 range seems nebulous.

Anyway, another option is to marry a poor immigrant who needs citizenship. That way, you'll not have to figure your wealthy step-dad into the application next year, but instead your dirt-poor immigrant husband, which will garantuee you the phat grants.

AChimp Apr 19th, 2006 10:34 AM

I suggest you pretend you're Canadian and go to a Canadian university. The tuition for my ENTIRE degree (4.5 years) was just over $15,000, and that included the textbooks I foolishly bought. If I had gotten an Arts degree, it would have been even less.

ScruU2wice Apr 19th, 2006 10:58 AM

Do you live on campus because dorming is pretty expensive and you are generally better off finding an apartment nearby with roommates.

It's really about cutting as many corners as you can get. Like if a friends is going to sell back there used book to the store for 50% the price ask to buy it from them for 60-70% because the bookstore will generally just knock off a couple bucks and pocket the the difference. Don't get a huge meal plan if you can buy food and make it yourself.

I honestly don't know if any of that will help you but that's how it is at my school and I'm pissed that I wasted as much money as I did. :/

AChimp Apr 19th, 2006 11:09 AM

I agree with Scru, but if you live off-campus, you don't get to participate in any of the crazy sex romps that inevitably happen in dorms!
