My favourite thing about this movie was how the portrayed Maxwell Smart. Also, I don't know if anyone else felt this way, but the traitor took me by complete surprise. (Trying not to be a spoiler).

Yeah, the traitor in the movie really surprised me too, but I gotta say, my favorite part is when Max gets captured by the guys and asks" Would you believe me i i sai there are 130 black ops snipers outside? No? How about 24 delta force commandos? ........Chuck Norris with a BB gun?" Best part of the whole movie right there.

You guys really need to see the original series. It is probably the original spy spoof.

I love the original series, you should all really check it out.

Chuck Norris for the win!!!

I had no idea that the media actually took account of internet memes until I saw this movie XD

But, anyway...This had to be one of the greatest movies that got bad reviews ever made. Heck, one of the greatest movies ever PERIOD.

I've been wondering about this one, too. Having caught the original series in syndication (Go Nick at Nite!) when I was younger, I positively loved it and am, as always, leery of modern "remakes" of things. I haven't seen any other reviews but Proto's but honestly, I value the comments here, by both staff and forum-members a lot more than formal reviews. May have to go check this one out.

I completely agree with this review. I'm a fan of the old series, and I was more than a little unnerved with all the bad reviews. But when I watched it, that all melted away and I really enjoyed it. Steve Carell is great (as he usually is), and I also loved David Ketridontknowhowtospellit as Larabee (he's a funny guy; outside The Comebacks at least). While it didn't capture the feel of the series as much as it could've, it was still a very funny summer film.

And proto, you really should check out the original series. It's classic humor, with the great Don Adams giving birth to a whole slew of catchphrases and wonderfully quirky gadgets. Throw in the fact that it was created and written by Mel Brooks, and you've got gold. I've never actually seen it on TV (I'm sure it's on somewhere), but you can rent (or buy!) the entire series on DVD now. Give it a watch sometime (if you had to pick just one episode, make it the Olympics one, it's one of the best).

I have to go to the movies this week and make my own decision about this flick (hey, this is a verse!).

Steve Carell is a sure-fire way to make sure that I do not spend money or life seeing your movie.

If only the movie critics used their power for niceness, instead of evil.

From what you say, the movie sounds ike it is like the serries, I loved it when i was younger.... The shoe phone, cone of scilence, and the slapstick humer and "missed it by that much" all good quotes. The cameps were no doubt other agents, and i bet it does much better than that serries in the 90's "Get smarter"

thanks for the good review. if more people went in to movies with an open mind and fresh perspective maybe more movies would be seen on the average persons' opinion. not some overweight schmoe and a bucket of popcorn and some whiney guy who thinks he knows what he's talking about.

I felt exactly the same way as you did! Someone shouldn't go into this movie expecting it to be phenomenally reminiscent of the series. It's the same setting and characters being used in a wholly different way.

"I had no idea that the media actually took account of internet memes until I saw this movie XD"

...did you ever see X-Men 3? He's the Juggernaut... bitch.

I ordered season 1 of the original from time/life. Apparently it if 5 dvds.

Have yet to see this one-- have been more focused on and jazzed about the blowin-shit-up-real-good-in-purdy-colors summer movies, so far-- but I've read a couple of interviews in which series co-creator Mel Brooks gave the movie his blessing. I'll take that as a very good sign.

i havent seen the movie but i did see a few of the episodes and along with m.a.s.h, the adams family, gilligan's island, bewitched, and i dream of genie, is a classic comedy of years gone by. seems to me that steve carell's choice for agent maxwell was great and i know that im not gonna be dissapointed. hopefully this and the new batman flick will revive a somewhat lackluster summer movie season.
