Wall-E

Anyone see it? I heard there is no talking in the movie. Going to see it on discount Tuesday.

Fathom Zero Jul 10th, 2008 12:04 AM

Saw it. There is plenty of talking in it. I liked it.

The message, though, was pretty heavy. They really lay it on you. But it's still pretty good.

Esuohlim Jul 10th, 2008 12:12 AM

I want to see this. I haven't been disappointed with Pixar yet (although I admit I haven't seen Cars yet).

liquidstatik Jul 10th, 2008 02:27 AM

I haven't seen cars 'cause I don't want to be disappointed with Pixar :x

Also, what's this HEAVY MESSAGE ya speak of fathom, 'cause I might go see it in a couple days. :O

Fathom Zero Jul 10th, 2008 02:29 AM

You'll know it easily enough if you try and look on the internet but it's a bit of a groaner.

liquidstatik Jul 10th, 2008 02:29 AM

j/c you were quick to reply

liquidstatik Jul 10th, 2008 02:36 AM

well the message sounds pretty lame, but i guess if it's subtle it'll be alright :x

Tadao Jul 10th, 2008 02:43 AM

:x

Guitar Woman Jul 10th, 2008 02:58 AM

Two of the major characters don't talk, no, but they pulled off the silent protagonist thing really well.

Fathom Zero Jul 10th, 2008 03:46 AM

Also, I thought the whole "Robot teaching people about being people" thing was really cool.

glowbelly Jul 10th, 2008 11:09 AM

probably the best pixar movie yet. LOVED IT.

liquidstatik Jul 10th, 2008 01:14 PM

So should I see this or the new batman movie? :x I really don't wanna spend a whole 20 bucks seeing booootth

Fathom Zero Jul 10th, 2008 01:30 PM

pac-man Jul 12th, 2008 02:07 AM

Wall-E is hands down Pixar's best effort, and The Dark Knight looks mighty good. I would feel bad for you if you only saw one and missed out on two great movies.

Wall-E's message isn't heavy handed, but it does hit home because, honestly, humanity and the earth are headed in the direction that the movie points. The animation is top-notch, of course. And Wall-E the character does as much with his lack of speaking as Tom Hanks did while stranded in Cast Away.

The Dark Knight is getting high praise, and I think it may be the comic book movie that people who don't enjoy comic books will enjoy. There are few clips on the web, and they certainly impress. I think it will transcend the superhero stigma and earn mention among finer crime dramas.

I wouldn't be surprised if both of these films get Oscar nods. Wall-E should easily take the Best Animated Feature award, and if we are to believe the hype, Heath Ledger could get a nod for his turn as The Joker. Get with some friends and watch both. $20 isn't exactly small change, but if you have nothing else to do and some friends who are down, I'd say see both films.

ItalianStereotype Jul 12th, 2008 01:35 PM

are you kidding me? I'll shit on $20 just because I don't like jackson's face. it's $20, small change is EXACTLY what it is. just go see both, danny.

Blue Fox Jul 13th, 2008 02:13 PM

yea, 20 bucks isn't that bad for two movies.

as the end of the wall-e demographic, i guess i can't help but say that i kinda wanna see it.... a lot.

but the dark night looks wicked awesome. the joker actually looks scary with his smeared, deranged looking make-up.

The first half in particular was great, and overall it was a very good movie, but some moments in the second half dragged it down a little. In particular, "I don't want to survive, I want to live!" made me groan. Ratatouille was better, and overall I think that it's still the best Pixar movie (INCLUDING TOY STORY YOU SCHMUCKS.)

I consider Ratatouille as the beginning of the second generation of Pixar movies, dealing with slightly more complex motifs than the first ("Toys! Bugs! Fish! Cars...?") and I'm glad that Wall-E continues in that tradition of being about more than just a rag tag band of anthropomorphic fools.

J. Tithonus Pednaud Jul 20th, 2008 07:50 PM

I took my nieces to see Wall-E this week not expecting anything at all from it. I don't generally follow animation films these days - my girlfriend is an animator and likes to leave her work at work - and visually I sort of wrote it off as a Short Circuit knockoff.

But Wall-E blew my mind.

What an extraordinary accomplishment in animation. To create a film in which non-existent, digitally constructed characters effectively pantomime two thirds of the movie is absolutely astounding. I understood what was going on, what the characters were feeling, the plot was carried and and the motives of the character were clear with almost no dialog.

Live action actors often have a hell of a time pulling stuff like this off.

Really, really impressed by the effort Pixar put forth and incredibly impressed by the end product.

Fathom Zero Jul 20th, 2008 10:36 PM

I laugh every time I hear Wall-E say "WHAAAALLLL EEE"

Nick Jul 21st, 2008 01:08 AM

I really wish Pixar would mess up just once. That way I would know that they are indeed human.
