South Carolina OKs death penalty for sex crimes

Mass exodus expected as the South Carolina House on Wednesday passed a pair of bills that would allow prosecutors to seek the death penalty for some repeat child molesters.

Support for the package picked up steam after a man was charged with kidnapping two girls and raping them in a dungeon behind his home earlier this year.

The related measures could send to death row offenders convicted twice of raping a child younger than 11.

One bill was approved earlier by the Senate and now goes to the governor's office, but the second must go back to the Senate for reconsideration.

Opponents accused their fellow House members of casting politically favorable votes during an election year, and questioned whether capital punishment is constitutional for people who haven't killed anyone.

"I'm concerned about the emotional part of this whole issue," said state Rep. Ken Kennedy, a Democrat. "We're getting ready to do something in South Carolina that will cause us a lot of problems down the road."

In March, Kenneth Hinson of Hartsville was accused of kidnapping two 17-year-old girls and confining them in a closet-sized underground chamber. Authorities say the girls were sexually assaulted and left bound inside the room, concealed under a shed, but managed to free themselves and walk to safety.

Hinson, 47, was captured after a four-day manhunt in the woods near his home.

Under the existing law, if convicted Hinson faces a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. He was previously convicted in 1991 of raping an 11-year-old girl. No trial date has been set.

Louisiana, Florida and Montana allow the death penalty for sex crimes.

I approve... MAYBE. I need more details about said sex crimes. Kidnapping is already a mandatory life sentence, so it looks ok to me.

Girl Drink Drunk May 31st, 2006 07:56 PM

I'm not a huge death penalty fan, but I say about fucking time on this one.

Kulturkampf Jun 1st, 2006 07:55 AM

I think we should kill them with a KNIFE or a HATCHET.

mburbank Jun 2nd, 2006 09:49 AM

And if we end up killing a bunch of people who had crappy public defenders and weren't guilty, well, colateral damage is a concept we're prety familliar with.

Immortal Goat Jun 2nd, 2006 11:03 PM

I'm going to have to agree with... Kultur, surprisingly, here, Max.

While I do find it terrible that some innocents get convicted of crimes they didn't commit, I like to think that for the most part, our justice system works, and anyone who is sick enough to do that kind of shit to kids doesn't deserve the life they have been granted.

Yeah, isn't it pretty to think so?

I do agree, molesters don't deserve life. But isn't sodomy a sex crime too? WHERE DO WE DRAW THE LINE?

Immortal Goat Jun 3rd, 2006 12:09 AM

We draw the line at those little things called "age" and "consent". That's all we need to use to judge a case like this. Were all parties the legal age, and did all parties give consent.

"pair of bills that would allow prosecutors to seek the death penalty for some repeat child molesters."

If you get wrongfully convicted more than once for molesting kids you deserve to be killed anyways. Its probaly better than living in prison knowing you didn't butt fuck those kids(again!!!) and waiting a couple of decades to get out of jail and be isolated from normal society.

Dead Kennedy: Butt fucking isn't a crime in America. Butt fucking a 5 year old is.

Incorrect. Some states still have sodomy laws on the books. Sodomy is, by definition, any sexual act that is not intended for procreation. So, even getting a blowjob in some states is technically illegal.

As for the death penalty for child molesters, well.... I think life in prison is enough. Even in prison society, child molesters are considered the scum of the earth. Some prisons even seperate pedophiles from the general population, so they don't get beaten to death by the other convicts.

I had no idea this was the case. Just thought it was anal. Thank you for teaching me something new today. :)

Kulturkampf Jun 4th, 2006 10:56 PM

The law is irrelevent. People have just not bothered to take it off of the books because... It is a waste of time.

It is also acting as a stand along offense in order to 'throw the book at them,' for rapists and others who commmit these crimes; at the age of 16 I posed this question to a lawyer, expecting to trick him and make him a fool for supporting such stupid laws, but now I am not 16 and have looked past these things.

derrida Jun 5th, 2006 08:16 AM

Why can't we make them slaves and shit instead?

mburbank Jun 5th, 2006 09:28 AM

1.) I am personally, morally opposed to the government having the power to take peoples lives.

2.) I do not believe that when governments have such an extreme power that it will not be at best handled carelessly and at worst abused.

3.) I do not believe that our justice system can ever represent the rich and poor equally. This is something one has to live with, but I am not prepared o give the power of life and death over to a system which values the rich over the poor.

4.) If one innocent person is executed, that's too much. There is no reprieve from execution. You can't let a man out of execution if new evidence is dicovered.

5.) Finding a crime particularly repugnant is not a reason to desire the ultimate penalty. A child molester who gets life without parole is no more capable of molesting children than a dead child molester. If however, it turned out at some later date that the person in question was innocent, you can't ressurect them.

6.) Any crime the brings out such viceral, primal desire for retribuition is ripe for witch hunting, and it's happened. In the 1980's in Massachusettes and entire group of people went to jail, some of them for decades, when the evidence clearly showed (and it is now widely agreed) they were innocent.

Before you argue the particulars with me, I will restate that I am against state sanctioned execution in all cases. At base, I believe it is wrong to take a human life, without exception.

sadie Jun 5th, 2006 02:27 PM

i'm against the death penalty, as well. even if it were my child, yes. even if it were my mother, yes. regardless. no killing.

Interesting, so according to you justice and rage are the same exact thing?

I thougt justice had a different definition. I mean, we've skipped right over public castrations, haven't we?

Immortal Goat Jun 5th, 2006 06:33 PM

I was simply stating that I don't think it is unjust to remove a wart of a human being from the face of the planet if it is a repeat offender.

KevinTheOmnivore Jun 5th, 2006 06:59 PM

Shouldn't we kill all rapists, too?

Archduke Tips Jun 5th, 2006 08:01 PM

Who of you are worthy to live upon our once harmonious world? I judge you all guilty of crimes against Earth and you shall all be sentenced to DEATH by the destruction you caused to your own environment. (most likely it will come in the form of cancer)

Preechr Jun 6th, 2006 12:17 AM

You just said "Kill em all, Let God sort em out."

Yes

I agree with Max though.

In my perfect world the justice system would be able to determine who is guilty without error and rapists of all nature would face terrible painful terrifying punishment. If you know someone raped your loved one I think its perfectly fine to wish horrible horrible pain and suffering on them. Life is too short to deny yourself the satisfactions that come at other's expense when they deserve it and your pleasure in the situation is socially acceptable.

Life in prison is more cruel than a state sanctioned death penalty in my opinion, and thus more fitting for vengeance really. I'd rather live the rest of my life knowing a rapist is being mistreated and with any luck savagley raped and beaten every day than know he died a fairly painless death.

I can't honestly imagine anyone ever feeling any semblance of regret for punishing a rapist in such a way. Or a murderer for that matter. If yall think you would then I understand. I think your compassion is grossly misplaced but I understand.

KevinTheOmnivore Jun 6th, 2006 08:54 AM

You're so understanding. Thanks, sweetheart.

Be back, muwah!

Courage the Cowardly Dog Jun 7th, 2006 05:48 PM

I think we can all agree repeat child rapists should at the LEAST get life. I do believe in the daeth penalty but only in very rare obvious cases.

Honestly we have a far to prevolant child molestation culture now a days. The Dutch are trying to legalize Child porn, The Japanese have to put anti child trafficing symbols on their brochures. My best friends wife was molested as a little girl and my fiance was almost raped by her uncle when she was in gradeschool. Oh and i work with 2 convicted pedos. and I thought I was the biggest perv at work.

Anyway I'd like to see stronger punishments. Even first time offenders should have some Psych help to see if they even CAN be reformed.

Girl Drink Drunk Jun 7th, 2006 07:35 PM

I guess what I said was a bit extreme, and I agree with Max, but we need to put the foot down on child molesters in some way. I am not talking neccessarily about those that have been convicted once. I think that if they are willing to get the help they need and control their actions, then they deserve a new chance at life (outside a prison or institution, that is). If they are remorseful and want to better their lives, than to a certain degree, they should have a chance to live without worrying what others think of them for what they did in the past. I am more concerned about the repeat offenders and the ones like Kenneth Hinson that put kids in fucking holes and underground chambers. I would be willing to see people like them put to death. I donno for sure, though, because we are still talking about taking other people's lives.

Courage the Cowardly Dog Jun 9th, 2006 07:33 PM

obviously execution is not to be taken lightly, but I think unrepentant multiple child rapists are as deserving as say unrepentant multiple murders.

Note that the south has an abnormally high problem in this field. Reminds me of the old please don't fuck the children article ROG put up. I always love that article.
