The High School Sports thread

I am making this thread for all high school sports stories we may see and wish to discuss, on in the case i am about to post, rant on

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...t.40d72ee.html

100-0 against a team of girls with learning problems with a pool of 20 students to choose from? Really? :\

I am mildly curious what sort of league backlash this will cause. Will it motivate the rest of the league to beat down (figuratively) the team that gave this beating? God I hope so.

10,000 Volt Ghost Jan 22nd, 2009 08:41 PM

That's a bit much. I give the losing team credit for not just giving up. I personally might have chosen otherwise.

Colonel Flagg Jan 22nd, 2009 11:08 PM

As the parent of a child with a learning disability, all I can say is "Fuck You, Coach Grimes."

He called the victory "unfortunate". Hey asshole, you're the coach. Take the point guard (48 points) out of the game if she can't ease up a little. And this is a Christian school? Exactly what kind of Christianity are you practicing by beating up on a team you obviously outclass by a long way?

WhiteRat Jan 22nd, 2009 11:37 PM

That's just disgusting. How hard is it to tell your players to pass the ball x amount of times before they shoot? My high school's hockey team was absolutely atrocious, losing games by such scores as 12-0, 13-1, and even the infamous 19-1 game my sophomore year. Opposing coaches would tell their players to pass the puck a minimum amount of times (anywhere from 5-10) before they could even shoot the puck.

BTW, this is a good idea for a thread.

I don't know what you guys are smoking, this shit's hilarious. I have this mental picture of hordes of slavering, overweight Christian parents screaming KILL THE PIGS, CUT THEIR THROATS, KILL THE PIGS, CUT THEIR THROATS as their precious angels viciously beat down handicapped opponents and shriek that God is punishing them for their sins while the cheerleaders praise Jesus

It is actually funny when you stick it in a vacuum and put that sick twist on it. Bravo sir! :lol

A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

What the fuck man, they aren't supposed to feel bad about it

This is the sort of spineless, reconciliatory admittance of wrongdoing that puts satirical cartoonists out of business

WhiteRat Jan 29th, 2009 08:04 PM

So the coach of the winning team was fired the other day.

Grislygus Jan 30th, 2009 12:47 PM

Shit, now he's the school martyr.

I was on my school cricket team from 1997-2000. We were so bad, never won a game. My high score for my entire playing career was 13. Not out. And I opened. I once got a wicket, although it was more down to the fact that someone else caught it, rather than my lazy ball bouncing three times down the pitch and getting hammered down the field.

Getting padded up to go out to bat was one of the scariest things of my entire life. You sat there dreading it for hours, then when it was finally your turn to get in you had to wander out into the middle of the field with fifty pairs of eyes watching you. You get to the stumps, you stick your bat out for the umpire to tell you if it's in the middle (I don't know why, but everyone else was doing it) and then you stick your arse out in a ridiculous stance while trying not to wet your box at the thought of someone hurling a really quite hard ball at you. The bowler bowls it. You get out first ball and the other team laughs at your incompetence (as usual). Then it's just another long, embarrassing walk back to dad's car for a cry.

I haven't played it since.

I guess Pub Lover is the only one who will maybe remotely give a fuck about me and cricket right now.

McClain Feb 2nd, 2009 01:26 PM

The school district is at fault IMO. If indeed the losing team is comprised of girls with issues/learning disabilities, what the fuck were they doing playing on that level?
So that they aren't treated different?

Irony is thick. Sensitivity is thicker.

Another blowout brings another school's sportsmanship into question. But this one is different from the 100-0 blowout against a developmentally slow school. This one happened because one team was just that much better than everyone they played. They happen to be actively going for several school, national, and all time records. The school they dropped 170+ on decided to start a fight by dropping an intentional foul in the second half however, and yet the school that won is being frowned upon. While yes, these may be kids, they are all playing in hopes for college spots down the line. If you aim high, then you may fail hard. That is life, and we need to stop shielding high school aged students that will be our future from it. Otherwise they will be ill prepared for life when there is no safety net.

"They work really hard in practice, and when they go in, they deserve the chance to play hard and compete, too," Wise said. "We are looking for another state championship, and we can't get that unless we are continuing to get better and perfect our game. We aren't scoring on other teams out of disrespect."
Couldn't have said it better myself. Sounds like a team who wanted to play to their full potential regardless who they're playing against. What were they supposed to do? Slow everything down and hand the ball to the opposing team during every possession when they were up by 100 points?

Colonel Flagg Jan 9th, 2010 10:14 PM

Agreed. The games are scheduled, and everyone knows that they're about to play the best team in the country. Of course you expect to get hammered. Do your best, and take the small victories where you can. That's teaching.
