Commonwealth Games

Hey Canada, how about those Commonwealth Games?

I've watched about thirteen seconds of it.

Pentegarn Oct 12th, 2010 05:57 PM

Wow I am usually on top of all things sports

What are the Commonwealth Games?

Zhukov Oct 12th, 2010 10:13 PM

It's like the Olympic games for the British Empire. So basically a right old thrashing of countries like Lesotho and Swaziland by Australia/England/Canada.

It's being held in Delhi this year, and India is actually doing pretty well; second on the medal tally behind Australia. I watched them beat England in the Hockey last night and it was rather exciting for some reason.

Sounds like the strangest thing I've ever heard.

Shadowdancer21b Oct 12th, 2010 10:57 PM

So, presumably, cricket is one of the main events?

The Doctor Oct 13th, 2010 05:55 AM

Woohoo Canada is fourth, yeah I watch these results on highlights only. The biggest thing here in Canada happened before the games began and that was due to the conditions in India in the athlete village. I guess they were deplorable but were fixed up somewhat. With the MLB playoffs and hockey starting these get a small mention near the end of the sports shows in the am.

Cricket has only been played once, apparently, in Malaysia in 1998. I don't even have to finish reading the wikipedia article to know that Australia must have thrashed everyone. It's too long to play properly in an event like the Commonwealth games, but organisers want to bring it back for the Glasgow 2014 games in a revised ... oh, you've stopped reading.

I only like the Commonwealth Games because places like The Isle of Man and Norfolk Island get to compete, whereas if they even thought about entering the Olympics they would get laughed out of existence.

Shadowdancer21b Oct 13th, 2010 01:08 PM

That's a good point. Cricket matches take a long time after all. Isle of Man (Wight) and other small places should be able to compete. Good on 'em.

The Doctor Oct 13th, 2010 08:58 PM

I actually like cricket, only because I stayed with family in England this past summer and was able to get into it properly...ie drinking in a pub and having strangers tell me whats what, it was great, seriously good times...I am not being sarcastic, but the more I type the more it seems I am.

Zhukov Oct 13th, 2010 10:53 PM

I find cricket is only good to play, and it's absolutely the most boring sport to watch. Unless you just like laying around on the grass drunk, calling the Poms poofters then falling alseep for a few hours (and not missing the action). Which is why it's so popular here.

You will find many in the States say the exact same thing about baseball

Shadowdancer21b Oct 14th, 2010 01:56 PM

Agreed. Baseball is super dull to watch. Then again, I only enjoy watching combat sports.

Pentegarn Oct 14th, 2010 06:00 PM

Like combat basketball?

The Doctor Oct 14th, 2010 06:49 PM

How about Base Wars

10,000 Volt Ghost Oct 15th, 2010 11:38 AM

Love me some Base Wars.

ibsys2562 Nov 24th, 2010 12:37 PM

It seems that I am out of date now. This is the first time I hear about this game

executioneer Nov 24th, 2010 03:24 PM
