Psychedelic Metal?

Idea of such bands has long interested me, but bands I hear people claim are fitting of this description don't really live up to it in my eyes. (Alchemist, Kyuss)
(though I think they're both pretty sweet)

Perhaps you guys can help me locate such artists?

Thanks

EDIT: O.. Apologies for posting in general discussion instead of music forum. Found this place via linkage from music-related site so I assumed general would incompas that sites theme. Meows, sorry again.

Cathedral

Jomb Sep 12th, 2006 09:33 PM

Get the album, "The ethereal mirror", or if you can find it, the "cosmic funeral" ep, cathedral is the best fusion of psychedelics and metal.
seriously.

I find cats in pajamas to be aesthetically displeasing.

You should keep it. It's quite fetching on you.

i don't know if godspeed is considered metal since I'm not good with genres but i think they are the best psychedelic metal band. TAKE IT FROM A PRO KIDS.

That and neurosis, man I'm glad I rememered that. And on a notsometalish note YOB. Those three are always on my list. It's bestto listen to the albums in order in general.

Dixie Sep 15th, 2006 02:51 PM

What the hell? To answer the question no, not really. Pretty much all metal is psychedelic in it's own way, it just depends on what you're looking for. Alot of what may be considerd psychedelic is actually doom metal. Please take into consideration Metal Mockery is here for entertainment purposes.

kahljorn Sep 15th, 2006 03:28 PM

all the doom metal I've listened to sounds like old rock mixed with death metal and they always have fucking opera music/vocals for some reasons; it sounds like shit when you're doing drugs. Electric Wizard is probably my favorite doom metal band(i t hink they are considered doom metal).

I hope you meant psychedelic as in sounds good on drugs/psychedelics.

Dixie Sep 15th, 2006 03:46 PM

You speak of the doom-death movement. No, that's not what I refer to. I'm not really a fan of alot of that, trust me on this, there IS good doom metal. (Sorry Cathedral just don't do it for me, I HATE Dorrian's vox). Yes Electric Wizard was once considered doom, but they're moseying on over to the stoner rock trend. As far as doom bands that may be considered psychedelic, it really depends on what you're looking for. Alot of lyrics are considered as such but there are quite a few bands that are psychedelic in music arrangements. I can give some examples but I'd have to know what someone is looking for. A 60s psych groove? Bizarre lyrics or vocals? It's all speculation. Pentagram is an excellent example or alot of it, they're older than dirt and it's said older than Black Sabbath but that too is speculation, they've been around forever, are doom, and are completely psychedelic being that the singer is/was a heroin junkie and is now a crack head. The early stuff is incredible. Human Hurricane baby.
Another good candidate for something psychedelic and metal might be Psychotic Waltz. Excellent band, and very weird.

kahljorn Sep 16th, 2006 01:16 AM

Exactly I hated cathedral although I thought candlemass was okay, i think those are generally considered "Doom metal".
I'll have to try those other two you mentioned but just so you know heroin and crack aren't psychedelics. Psychedelics are things like mushrooms, lsd mescaline etc. I suppose anything can be considered psychedelic in one way or another but smoking crack is so much different than doing psychedelics and I imagine the music that would be enjoyable would be alot different :(

have you listened to neurosis carnivore is god?

Dixie Sep 16th, 2006 05:54 AM

Cathedral and Candlemass are doom, absolutely. But doom metal is really frickin wierd and there are so many different "types", I prefer clean vocals myself. And you want Pentagram from the USA with Bobby Leibling on vocals. You might also dig Witchfinder General, but not the live album that just came out from 81. Witchfinder General are awesome, you'll just have to check em out. Yeah I've checked out Neurosis, but it's really not my thing.
Yes I look like something in between this:

And this:

kahljorn Sep 17th, 2006 04:25 AM

You should get through silver and blood and times of grace and listen to them while tripping on acid or some other intense psychedelic. It works! Personally I think the only music that makes good psychedelic music is long music, because it has to have that trance feeling to get you into a particularly good state. but again im mostly talking about the drugs not really the music in itself.

I look somewhere between mel gibson from braveheart and smeegul.

Jomb Sep 17th, 2006 07:06 PM

Metal is not my primary genre anymore, hasn't been in over a decade...

If your question was just psychedelic music in general I'd have a list longer than my arm.

But for bands which are generally considered to be metal, of the ones I've heard, Cathedral is the trippiest. I actually like Lee Dorian's vocals to. That and the huge massive hypnotic guitar riffs and the hallucinatory lyrics with their other-wordly imagery.

There is some question of what the word "psychedelic" means in terms of music though, it can mean different things to different people.

How long is your arm?

Jomb Sep 17th, 2006 08:55 PM

I figure my arm is worth about 100 lines of text (depending on font and size) and i could easily come up with a longer list than that!

noob3 Sep 17th, 2006 10:10 PM

i wish helm was here to destroy this thread with his metal prowess

Dixie Sep 18th, 2006 07:09 AM

Helm hates all of you now. But he's still my friend. Nyehhhh :P
