I thought pizza in italy was left over food baked into a puffy bread that extremely poor people ate.

Maybe that's how it evolved, but considering Queen Margherita had her favorite style of pizza named after her I doubt it carried that stigma for very long.
The biggest difference is that they insist on real wood fires in brick ovens, which makes it taste gooooood. |

Many of the italian restaurants around here make italian pizza the way you described. I like the calzones better, though. Calzones are fucking delicous, and if you ask them to they'll cover it with marinara sauce :O :O :O |
