Maybe that's how it evolved, but considering Queen Margherita had her favorite style of pizza named after her I doubt it carried that stigma for very long.

The biggest difference is that they insist on real wood fires in brick ovens, which makes it taste gooooood.

Many of the italian restaurants around here make italian pizza the way you described. I like the calzones better, though. Calzones are fucking delicous, and if you ask them to they'll cover it with marinara sauce :O :O :O
