I'm surprised there hasn't been a Futurama is back thread. So here's one

Futurama has been back for a couple weeks now I think (2 new episodes keep airing almost every day anyway)

Thoughts? Opinions?

So far I think it is a lot like the movies were. Not quite as good as it once was, but I was expecting as much.

darkvare Jul 2nd, 2010 12:49 AM

yeah but i hope they make amy more of a slut

Dr. Boogie Jul 2nd, 2010 01:37 AM

The last couple were pretty "meh", and this most recent one was about the same, but with even more pop culture references and scatological humor.

Spoilers!

Esuohlim Jul 2nd, 2010 02:09 AM

The first two I thought were ok, and the one that aired tonight was pretty bad. I don't think I've ever used "pretty bad" to describe a Futurama episode before. I don't know, man.

The pacing is incredibly frenetic. They were throwing away electronics, then taking them to the planet to dump them out, then watching a commericial for the new eyePhone, then they all go buy one, and all in a matter of two or three minutes. It's a little bit jarring.

And, yeah, what's up with the constant pop-culture references? Not only that, but using them as the sole plot vehicle? Social commentary is not Futurama, that's South Park. Granted, South Park is always much more preachy about it, but Futurama has always been about using the characters to drive the plot. This episode felt like Randy Marsh buying an iPhone and becoming obsessed with Twitter while Stan stands there angrily trying to make the point that social networks are actually distancing people socially. And that sucks because I've hated South Park for a few years now.

Susan Boil is a terrible terrible joke. I couldn't believe it actually happened. FUTURAMA'S WRITING STAFF IS MADE UP OF NERDS WITH PH.Ds FROM IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS, FUCKING HELL

Ever since I learned over a year ago that Futurama was coming back I was afraid that it was going to turn into South Park/new Simpsons/Family Guy, and I know it's too early to tell but it's starting to feel that way. >:

I TAKE MY FUTURAMA VIEWING VERY SERIOUSLY. MY HEART IS BREAKING.

I never knew it was cancelled, or even that it aired the first time. Shows how "plugged into today's culture" I am, doesn't it. :(

10,000 Volt Ghost Jul 2nd, 2010 11:03 AM

I'm going to wait until the new startup season is over before giving it a final judgement. I liked the first two episodes but fell asleep while the new one came on last night.

Dr. Boogie Jul 2nd, 2010 03:05 PM

And another thing: the whole bit with Mom introducing an evil plot via the eyephones just kind of petered out. It just kind of happened, and no one really noticed.

And weren't people already buying the eyephones like crazy? Why would she need to do all that to keep selling them?

Pentegarn Jul 2nd, 2010 04:22 PM

That gag was less plot and more a "iPhone users are zombies" statement

There were a few laughs to be had though, and I dvr'd it so I got to waste about 10 minutes less then everyone who watched it live :P

Supafly345 Jul 4th, 2010 01:48 AM

Sacrificing plot for an obvious joke seems to be pretty routine.

Tadao Jul 4th, 2010 02:09 PM

I have it all dvr'd but I'm really not looking forward to it. :(

darkvare Jul 4th, 2010 09:16 PM

you know what dissapointed me the most that 90% of the jokes were jokes everybody does about iphone and apple nothing new

10,000 Volt Ghost Jul 5th, 2010 11:38 AM

Watched the eyephone episode. The jokes and plot were really bad. I'm trying to think of a way to justify it but the only thing I can come up with is if part of the contract renewal they have to mainstream some more jokes to open the viewing audience past a reasonable demographic of intelligent people. :(

Dr. Boogie Jul 5th, 2010 04:27 PM

I guess so.

This week looks like a Gay Pride parody episode. Can't wait. :|

10,000 Volt Ghost Jul 6th, 2010 11:56 AM

I'm knocking on wood when saying this but I hope it doesn't end up like that girlfriend you used to have feelings for. You really wanted to get back together with after a terrible breakup. Then once you do get back together you realize some things were better left in the past.

Another analogy would be the Never ending story II.

Dimnos Jul 6th, 2010 01:51 PM

I didnt think it was that bad. :\

MarioRPG Jul 6th, 2010 03:41 PM

There's apparently an episode coming up all about Clamps, so that's what I'm looking forward to.

The garden of eden one was good ish. The others have been kinda meh.

10,000 Volt Ghost Jul 6th, 2010 03:47 PM

I'm really hoping but I see what happened to Family Guy after it came back. Like a hollow shell of its former corpse filled with pinata stuffing leftovers.

Here's hoping for Clamps.

Pentegarn Jul 7th, 2010 06:57 AM

OK so here's what the episode we are talking about did right.

1) The infosquito "This guy sure loves porn!"

2) Mom calling her sons dumb bastards a lot and slapping them repeatedly.

3) Partial credit: Real Housewives of Sim City

10,000 Volt Ghost Jul 7th, 2010 09:35 AM

The other joke I did laugh my ass off in the eyephone episode is when they were waiting in line. The professor walks under a street light that blinds him and he says "gasp! Oh, the light. Well I'm off to Hell."

Dr. Boogie Jul 10th, 2010 05:24 PM

The last one was pretty brutal. You really notice that they've completely replaced all the sci fi references with pop culture references.

MarioRPG Jul 11th, 2010 04:00 AM

welp, darkvare got his wish.
e: but I at least laughed a couple o times

Esuohlim Jul 11th, 2010 04:58 PM

I thought the most recent episode was actually pretty good. :\ And I'm the guy who hates everything

darkvare Jul 12th, 2010 12:22 AM

i liked it slut jokes and homophobic jokes are always my favorite kind

Pentegarn Jul 12th, 2010 06:25 AM

I have it on DVR but due to my last few evenings being crammed too full I have yet to watch it. I might this morning before work though.

Pentegarn Jul 17th, 2010 11:41 AM

The Robosexual episode.

What I liked about it:

The opening scene had a few laughs, "Free Corn", "Beat him his rights", "It does class up the place" were all decent pieces of business.

Bender was a freaking bastard, "Here's a little song I wrote called 'Let's go already' ", stealing Lassie's head and Chewbacca's feet, "The interesting thing about that is, zzzzzzzzz", "The truth is often stupid", etc. "We flipped a coin to see who starts the debate, and Bender stole it, so we'll start with him." Bender makes me laugh when he is at an 11 on the jerk-o-meter.

I laughed a bit at the robot wine server saying, "hopes, deleted"

Things I was not on board on with:

Circus-itis

The professor weather collection/baking contest joke seemed dumb to me
